I am in severe physical pain. all of my joints are in excruciating pain, very stiff, and many of my muscles ache.
I've tried rx ibuprofen, naproxen, advil, aleve, tylenol...none of that worked. I even had percocet 7.5/325 mgs which helped only very slightly, i still had sleepless nights due to pain.
anywho, i was in terrible pain all last night, again no sleep, managed to take about an hour nap, woke up and have never been in this much pain or stiffness that i could not even make a fist or grasp things. its not as stiff anymore, but im still in so much pain.
mind you im a female, 20 years old. My friend is giving me an oxycontin 10mgs...I'm worried it wont work, im so desparate. Do any of you know if this dose will be effective? I'm 5'8'' and weigh 135lbs. if that helps any. any suggestions of how to take it in order to get the most out of it?
Also, last night i was so desperate I tried taking about a mg of suboxone, which did nothing unfortunately. I took that around 9pm last night, and its now almost 3 pm...is it safe to even take the oxy now? if not how long do I have to wait? and can I mix naproxen with the oxy?
Please help!

Well, if a 7.5/325 Percocet didn't help you much I doubt a 10mg OxyContin will help you much more...you're talking about only 2.5mg more oxycodone and since OxyContin is extend-release (assuming you're not going to try and defeat the time-release mechanism) you probably won't get too much relief...or maybe even less relief...than you got with the Percocet (the oxycodone in Percocet is instant-release).

You can, however, take the naproxen with the oxycodone. No issues with interactions there.

Yes, it is safe to take the oxycodone now, however, since you took Suboxone (buprenorphine) less than 24 hours ago, some of the buprenorphine is still going to be attached to your receptors...and it may affect the oxycodone. Since you took a low dose of buprenorphine...the oxy may still work.

If I were you, I would skip taking the oxycodone now and just go with the naproxen if you can. Take the oxycodone tomorrow to give the buprenorphine enough time to clear out of your system.

Well, its too late. I stupidly forgot I was going to wait until later this evening before my classes to take it, i guess it was just instinct to immediately swallow it as soon as she handed it to me. My mother also gave me a Skelaxin 800mgs, and I'm going to take the naproxen shortly...I really hope this combination will provide some relief... :(
For chronic pain treatment, based on the information I have given, do you or anyone else have any suggestions?
Also, I will be starting a medication called Plaquenil by this Friday...any information about that or opinions would be very much appreciated...
thanks guys

Wow that's maleria medication. They obviously think you need something strong. What is your actual medical condition?

First line treatments for chronic pain are tricyclic anti depressants (they don't know exactly how these help chronic pain but they do, this i know from personal experience).
Next would be anti epileptic treatments such as gabapentin and topamax again, they don't know how it works, but it does.

Again, going by what you are being prescribed they may not work for you as I don't know your actual medical condition.

No actual diagnosis yet, but it appears to be Lupus. So far I've just given lots of blood samples, and had xrays of my hands and wrists as my doctor noted tenderness and swelling. My next appointment with her is in two months, two months too long in my opinion. But she said, in two months I will be having a bone scan done as well as a chest xray.
I don't see how its like medically or morally right for me to have to be in this severe pain for the next two months. I can't live and function like this, like I said, im 20 years old, a single mother, and attending college trying to keep my 4.0 gpa...it sucks when I have to miss classes due to this ridiculous pain. No joke, I was crying in my class last night because I couldn't stand the pain.

I don't know much about lupus and I doubt chronic pain treatments are realisticly going to help you. You need to pressure your doctor for some treatment. Be it just temporary pain management. Just be honest with them.

You also should be started on longer term treatment if they think it is lupus, it isn't right for them to leave you this long. I'm suprised they are making you wait so long for a chest x-ray though. I've only ever had chest x-rays as a medical emergancy so it's always immidiate, but still this sounds kind of urgent.

My guess is they would skip the tricyclic anti depressants and start her with an SSRI like cymbalta. My understanding is SSRI, selective seratonin re-uptake inhibitors, are replacing traditional tricyclic anti depressants for the most part nowadays. I take duloxtine (cymbalta) for my herniated disc and my bulging disc that is pushing up against a nerve in my spine, but OC and percocet are the only things that give me any real relief. I think that aside from the minor aid of blocking pain signals from reaching the brain SSRI's and tricyclic anti-depressants mostly work as a placebo.

If you aren't sleeping and you have pain that bad I'd think her doctor would at least start out with prescribing hydrocodone or some other narcotic analgesic, but I too am curious to know exactly what her condition is.

I'm in the same boat. Ever since my car accident my 3.6 GPA has been slipping. I've missed 4 classes this semester because I'd wake up after physical therapy and feel like the hunchback of notre dome. I don't have a child but I work full time and go to school full time so I can only imagine what it would be like to have a kid in the mix, that's a full time and a half job at the least. I also sympathize with the lupus, my best friend in high schools mom suffered from it. The nicest lady in the world, but some days she couldn't even get herself out of bed. Sounds like you might want to consider asking for a referral to a chronic pain specialist they're generally a lot more understanding of what someone is going through. Just don't ask too desperate, and listen to the doctors suggestions and be honest. Hope that helps.

BHPaperstacks, Please edit your posts instead of double posting. Thanks! =D

And while switching to SSRI's for depression is the correct thing to do I was not implicating them in the use of depression. They are not nearly as effective as tricyclics at treating chronic pain which was what I was referring to them for.

I will tell you right now they do not act as a placebo for chronic pain. After 5 years of different meds to try to treat my chronic migraines they are the first thing to EVER help. That is hardly a placebo.

Sounds rough...Yea i'd recommend bout 15-20 mg for that much pain.

I read that NSAID's speed up the healing process, if this is curable that is, although they may not provide relief

Yeah lupus is not curable unfortunately...I'm willing to try anything at this point. Even if it'd be as simple as braces or something to wear if that would somehow help. Idc if its narcotics or not at all, I prefer it not to be actually. I dislike feeling drowsy, I'm more of a stim kinda girl. I just want anything that will ease this pain.
I read somewhere online that dxm can be used for pain relief? Is this true? Any opinions

DXM is a dissociative anesthetic and is in the same family as ketamine or PCP both of which were originally intended to be used as an anesthetic for veterinarians to operate on animals without the animals feeling it, so yes it could be used to help alleviate pain. I used to take DXM quite a bit for a short period of time in highschool. After a while the high started to become kind of unpleasant. The amount I think you'd have to take to get significant pain relief might leave you feeling a bit overwhelmed and would definitely affect your academic abilities in a negative fashion. Honestly if you want more of an uppy pain relief high you might want to consider asking your doctor for oxycodone, though this too can give you that nod effect after a few hours. First few though it's golden, I get my school work, professional work, and housework taken care of no problem. Also if you're just in it for pain relief and you don't occasionally take your meds to get high then the nods shouldn't have a major effect on your life.

If you're going to go with DXM I'd recommend staying away from coricidan and anything with Ghfustessan or whatever the hell it's called, something with a g in the beginning. IT is very bad for your liver and body and taking it in any sort of substantial quantity can have extremely adverse effects. If you're going to try this route I suggest you use a product that contains only DXM like Robotussin extra strength. But seriously if your doctor isn't listening to you at this point and is still pussy footing around getting you some meds that might actually help alleviate what you're going through then ask for a referral to a pain specialist and if this doctor is a pain specialist then try to find another one..

DXM is a dissociative, so it will do the trick for pain. That said, if you don't like feeling "drowsy" on narcotics, you will absolutely hate DXM. At the levels you'd have to take for pain you wouldn't be able to function on it at all. I always keep a bottle of 20x15mg gel caps for absolutely emergencies, when the choice is that or shooting myself in the head. Last time I used it was maybe 4-5 months ago now. I really don't recommend it as a pain medication, unless there are just absolutely no other options.

Yeah actually after a bit of research I found that the tryciclic anti-depressant have a high success rate for certain types of chronic pain, migranes being one of them. My girlfriend is majoring in clinical psychology at UCSD and I guess I misunderstood what she said. She was telling me that that they use SSRI's because it has better side effects. She said both are well tested for alleviating chronic pain.

Yeah I prolly wouldn't abuse pain meds...I have many timess before but now its something I seem to need...
As for dxm, I have done extremely large amounts of dxm for a long period of time, I'm talking 41mgs/kg.
Idk why but I don't get drowsy at all. I haven't taken that much in years though but I still have an insane tolerance.. unfortunately I've always usually taken ccc more so than other dxm products. If I take sixteen cccs, I'm. Barely high.
What kind of dose would be good for pain relief?
And I totally know what yhou mean by the pain bieng so bad you just wanna blow your brains out...I feel like that basically always. :(

Sucks for you, sorry to hear about that. Examine all possible pain management techniques as well as pharms. Clinical trials have shown things like heat treatment to be pretty effective. Ralistically you re going to be needing some opiate for a period at least if things are as bad as you say they are. I know it's hard, but do your best to minimise their use, the last thing you want is a whacking great opiate habit on top of all that.

Not sure if this has been covered, but remember it is safe to use max dose ibuprofen at the same time as max dose apap. Might seem like fighting a house fire with a watering can, but every little helps remember.

I certainly wouldn't recommend a dissociative anesthetic as a realistic option, there's a reason they're not indicated for pain. A high enough dose to help you is going to render you pretty debilitated. Maybe once in a while for a break from the pain when you having nothing else to do, but otherwise probably not a great idea.

Ughhh. Does anyone have any type of suggestions to find some relief?
I can't take this anymore. Today is even worse. I'm so inflamed and swollen and in pain literally everywhere now. I took 500mgs naproxen and 1000mgs of extra strength Tylenol when I woke up. Which by the way, I didn't sleep yet again, mid morning I finally knocked out from exhaustion and had a 2hr nap. Then, around 6 I took another 10mg oxy, 800mgs skelaxin, 500mg naproxen, and 500mgs of extra strength Tylenol.
I STILL have no goddamn relief. I'm at a loss with what to do. Someone please help me out here!
Btw, I tried using icy hot last night on my joints and literally felt no type of effect other than an overwhelming menthol smell. I have accidentally gotten it around my nose, and it worked there, but not my problem areas. Wtf?

Sorry to hear you're in so much pain, and I'm double sorry you're possibly facing a Lupus diagnosis. It's a pretty nasty disease.

If it is Lupus, pain management is obviously extremely important, but your doctors should be starting you on some type of immunosuppresant and/or steroid to calm down your immune system. Lupus is caused by your body making antibodies against your own DNA. Although that doesn't cure the disease and there are many, many side effects of those meds, I'm certain it'll offer you some much needed relief. And if you're a "stim type of girl" Tramadol might offer you relief and give you a "speedy" feeling. Doctors usually aren't too shy to prescribe that drug, as it is non-narcotic.

As I suggested, go back to your doctor. You need to persist, i know it's hard.
