My liver and I want to thank you all!! I've been taking codeine for over 15 years for chronic pain and here in the states, codeine is mixed with tylenol -- got to be the worst liver toxin ever. And the government rules make it difficult for doctors to do the crazy paperwork to prescribe pure codeine. I plan to use your CWE technique to get rid of most of the tylenol from my tablets... and if I need an analgesic, I'll add some good old aspirin. So thank you all, I discovered this site and 'CWE' by accident and consider it a true blessing. Cheers!

about the ceiling effect

one thing is for sure with codeine, regardless of whether it is caused by liver enzyme saturation or not is that a ceiling dose does actual.

there is a point at which the amount of codeine that has made it to your main systemic circulation (i.e. not in the portal vessles) is so great that you start to get the dangerous unwanted toxic effects of codeine.

For me, this began at around one gram of codeine orally. Anything over that was pointless because of the magnitude of the histamine and anaphylactic response.

Parenteral codeine
I have had codeine parenterally after dodgy advice from one of my physiology lecturers saying that codeine was OK parenteraly. This was almost 10 years ago now and I was a kid but this was so dumb and scared the shit out of me. I obtained 2 X 30mg cody phos pills (not fotes, actual straight codeine pills that were tiny, smaller than an OC30). They were instant release.

it feels like I have just shot up glass and its scratching, prickling, spiking its way through my blood vessels not like a morph shot. It felt really painful, like something really bad was happening.

I feel sick

I don't feel the codeine at all, nausea and headache.

To my horror blisters appear on my shoulders and else where just seconds after injection. Itchy blister and welts.

AFter a little while the sick feeling start to go away and I feel OK but I didn't feel any effect from the codeine. Not even a slight effect. Back then 60mg was enough to get a nice buzz.

Judging from how bad 60mg was I can understand how it could easily be fatal at a higher dose.

I guess IM or a very slow infusion would possibly make it safer but I really do wonder about it having much of an recreational effect. As I said, IV didn't work at all and almost got me into serious trouble.

Another strange thing that happened regarding those codeine pills was that even the prescribing doctor seemed to hint that they were injectable. i.e. that. He said in a joking, nudging kind of way "don't put them all up your arm will you", which to me kind of implies that these are a drug that people tend to abuse by IV. I wonder if he even knew it was not OK.

You IV-d Codeine?? Thats a very silly thing to do, I suppose u learnt from ur mistakes. Im not surprised about the adverse reaction and histamine release etc etc. IM isnt safer either. Not sure why people assume it is safer. Good thing that ur still alive which is the main thing.

For me I need 600 mg codeine minimum to justify the session. 800 preferably. Sure 300-400 as an impromptu post-work indulgence can be enjoyable. But I find any spontaneous unplanned drugs are usually enjoyable. Especially after working.... your mood just seems more receptive to it and they work better.

But the whole ceiling dose of 400mg for me definitely isnt a reality.

My Blonde I asked this lat page but I think it got lost in the shuffle.... how is it that Mydol are able to sell boxes of 40x 15mg codeine/500 apap? Youve mentioned before but I forget the reason. I bought a packet from a nearby real world chemist on the weekend and have ordered 2 boxes at a time from a legitimate aussie online pharmacy.

Whatever this loophole is, would it also extend to to allowing to sell 2 boxes at a time? Forgetting the online pharmacies (because theyre often more relaxed with the codeine laws than actual bricks n mortar chems), but technically does this mean I could probably legally buy 2 or 3 boxes of Mydol 40s from the chemist? Whether or not they would sell it to me is another matter, but does the legal loop hole extend this far?

Just curious. Correct me if IM wrong but before Mydol the new legal limit for codeine is no more than 400mg in a single purchase right? ie. 1 box of chem brand panadeine (500/10) or 1 box of nurofen plus (or alt. brands) or 1 box of 24 panadeine extra.....? Pretty sure thats right.

yeah, it was 10 years ago and I was a kid going off the advice of someone who should have known better (physiology/pharmacology lecturer at a uni in syd)

I posted it because of all the talk about parenteral codeine on the forum of late.

pinkanga I wouldnt try buy 2 boxes at the same time from a chemist as that would deffinately raise suspicion, I think M_B said the reason they were allowed to sell more is because they called it codeine as opposed to codeine phosphate now i know it says on the box phosphate but maybe M_B meant when they registered it they labelled it without the phosphate or something im guessing.

Here is the entry for codeine (S3) in the SUSMP:

CODEINE when:
(a) not combined with any other opiate substance;
(b) compounded with one or more other therapeutically active substances, of which not more
than one is an analgesic substance:
(i) in divided preparations containing 12 mg or less of codeine per dosage unit; or
(ii) in undivided preparations containing 0.25 per cent or less of codeine;
(c) labelled with a recommended daily dose not exceeding 100 mg of codeine; and
(d) in packs containing not more than 5 days of supply at the maximum dose recommended
on the label,
except when included in Schedule 2.

Emphasis mine. Ok, so it says 12mg of codeine per tablet; have a look at the nearest packet of pain tablets (like me, I assume you have plenty at hand) and have a look at the ingredients listed. Codeine phosphate and paracetamol/ibuprofen.

The codeine is ionically bound to the phosphate anion (so it is present as a salt). Note that the SUSMP doesn't specify 12mg of codeine as a salt, just 12mg of codeine itself. So these new Mydol have 15mg of codeine phosphate per tablet, however if you subtract the weight of the phosphate you end up with less then 12mg codeine per tablet, and it is still a 5 day supply. This same principle is why Nurofen + can have 12.8mg per tablet, I just didn't really think about that before because it was only .8mg over.

Does that make sense? I can do the math to figure out the exact codeine content if anyone is interested.

Also, regarding the two boxes, the schedule doesn't say that pharmacies can't sell two boxes just that packets can only have a 5 day supply. Most pharmacies won't sell you two at once, however it depends on the pharmacist and I have a friend who can sometimes charm his way into getting two big packets and a big bottle of Rikodeine. :D

One of my mates gets a big kick out of doing similar, and also getting a few bottles of sprite to go with it. Always good for a giggle.

I found an awesome pharmacy that sells me 3-4 big boxes at a time Other day I tried to get 2 x 15 pills at a different place and there was no 30s so I was only allowed one. Kind of sucked. Have to visit my little chemist friend hahha

Yep; when we talk about dosing on here, everyone is talking about the dose of codeine phosphate they are using.

How I loathe this drug, and every opiate that follows. After taking this crap, along with poppy seed tea, I'm ready to quit this stuff for certain. I've had to leave work early a few times now, I've stolen about $200-$250 from my parents and sold my ipod for $40 to maintain this, and it's seriously screwing up my University studies. I know some people might think I'm just in a pseudo-bad position, particularly considering that it's not heroin or oxies, but this is absolutely painful to go through. I'm planning on just going cold turkey after tonight (my last night on this stuff), because every time I try and taper off it I end up in the same position where i'm taking it once or twice a day.

Codeine was the beginning of a long, dark road for me, that still hasn't ended. Of course, I've ended up IV'ing heroin apparently. That thought still scares the fuck outta me.

The poppy seed tea (1kg) smashed me last night. I don't know why, usually it does next to nothing. But I was up all morning vomiting from the shit, so I don't think I'll be touching this stuff any time soon.
