Methoxetamine (MXE) is an analog to ketamine and phencyclidine (PCP). It has to date not been restricted in many jurisdictions and is sold over the internet as a “research chemical”. It goes by several street names, including:

  • M-ket
  • Kmax
  • Mexxy
  • Special K (note: ketamine also appears under this street name)

Although there is scant scientific literature describing the pharmacology, toxicology, or clinical effects of MXE, it is reasonable to assume that they would be similar to those of ketamine or PCP. This interesting paper describes what the authors describe as the first laboratory-confirmed case report of intravenous MXE injection.

A 19-year-old male presented to the emergency department after injecting himself intravenously with MXE exhibiting extreme agitation, ataxia, and semi-stupor. He was oriented x 1, with hypertension (168/77), tachycardia (134 bpm), mydriasis, and nystagmus. His condition improved within 2 hours after treatment with midazolam and diazepam. The presence of MXE in the patient’s serum was confirmed by mass spectrometry.

The authors note that effects seen in this patient — tachycardia, hypertension, confusion, agitation, mydriasis, nystagmus, and ataxia — are similar to the adverse effects associated with ketamine.

Another case report described a 32-year-old man to presented to the emergency department after injecting himself intramuscularly with MXE purchased over the internet. At the scene he was agitated. When he arrived at hospital, he was oriented x 2, with tachycardia (105 bpm) and hypertension (140/95). He had mydriasis and rotary nystagmus.

A recent review notes that users report effects from MXE similar to those of ketamine, but with a more delayed onset (up to 90 min) and a longer duration (5-7 h). Withdrawal symptoms have been reported.

Since when is 105bpm tachycardia? Most people's heart rate would hit 105 just walking up a decent set of stairs.

In general I'm curious about what happened in these cases. MXE always felt extremely mild to me, very laid back and easy on the body, I'm having a hard time imagining pure MXE causing some kind of horrible physical reaction. It just sounds like these people didn't realize what they were in for when they injected a potent dissociative (ie: you're gonna get really fucking detached from reality for a while).

Besides, a high enough dose to detach you to the point of freaking out should also be high enough to more or less immobilize you, I would think.

ya thats an elevated heart rate at most. my target heart rate when doing cardio is around 130

Anybody else not liking all the attention MXE is getting in the past few weeks?

I recently started experimenting with this chemical. Purchased a Gram of it online through a vendor. It has been so far a very miraculous chemical. It's beautiful, in it's own way. Some chemicals, don't quite reach that level of description, many I shrug away as just being nasty chemicals, nasty drugs. But this one is definitely something else.

I fear it will be banned, and treated just like any other Research Chemical. Thrown away, banned from being researched and used medically, and forgotten. It's sad, really. This chemical is very promising, it holds something that I can't quite yet describe. It should be researched, and the effects on the body should be discovered through an unbiased study. I personally, would love to see how this affects us, and what it actually does to us.

Sounds like acute mania, this happens to some people, Ive seen it first hand. Could be caused by the dopamine reuptake inhibiting effects this compound has..?

I only think MXE has any physical effects such as this although someone could easily prove me wrong, im no expert. On the other hand, mental problems could be an issue. This substance is a very interesting thing, such a shame its getting banned were I live in 2 weeks and I have no money to stock up any, oh well maybe it will still be available easily.

Damn I remember when I injected just a little bit of Ketamine one time via the IM route. In two minutes I had to lay down and I remember being in awe at Battle-Star Galactica and not being able to move really for a while and then I was able to move but was very chilled out.

Then I remember when I injected some along with some heroin with a friend via IV route and we were glued to out arm chairs for god only knows how long. Him and I figured out the meaning of life but forgot what it was when we came back to reality.

I actually just ordered some MXE a few days ago hoping to recapture that magic in some way. Plan on doing it with a friend and chilling out.

I am glad to hear this.

From my understanding, the NMDA activity also prevents the brain from forming new memories. Or at least somewhat, maybe I have the science wrong but my friends and I have experimented with mxe over the last 6 months or so and more so when we reach the mhole-we learn things but don't remember any of them and as a result, have trouble getting somewhere with it. I spoke to someone at a recent show I went to and we discusses dissosciatives in general. He is quite the experienced user and in his opinion, mxe is better to treat addiction whereas k is better for therapy.

He is prescribed ketamine...what a lucky guy lol.
