I have used poppy seed tea off and on now for almost a decade, starting at 18 to a year or two ago. When I say I used poppy seed tea I am not kidding around, at one point I was drinking 6 pounds! of the stuff daily for two years straight. After being off it and all drugs for some time the monkey on my back started to itch and I decided to reminisce about my drug using days and visit erowid, bluelight, etc, I came across the stuff about heavy metal poisoning and cancer with poppy tea and am freaking the fuck out! I have had urinary problems ever since my heavy daily use of poppy tea and have never checked it out because I have no health insurance.

Now I understand no one here is a doctor and there are dozens of other possible reasons I could be having urinary problems and fatigue not related to my heavy tea use. I have obsessively been going over the material on every website I can find so I have pretty much already read everything out there. What I want to know is, has anyone taken tests of the heavy metal samples from poppy seeds found in grocery stores?

Can anyone more into chemistry absolve my fears? Looking at the research people link to I see that the first report is from the 80's and from germany?. The more recent study from 2003 states that it is from Czech republic and doesn't go into much detail about where the poppy seeds where taken from and exactly how much heavy metals where in them.

Has anyone gotten an actual kidney biopsy done and asked them to look specifically for cadmium? Is it just more likely that high calcium rate and fatty oils in the tea leave people with kidney stones?

Haha, I don't mean to be cold OP, but I'd be really happy for your if ANY of people such as you're asking about come forward...

Have you seen a doctor yet?

I have no health insurance, so nope but I'm working on it. I'm hoping I have something like a UTI, hernia or a kidney stones I am really freaked the fuck out that there is cadmium deposits in my kidney.

From what I've seen of prior posts from people have been tested out no one has asked specifically for a kidney biopsy to test for accumulated cadmium and to be honest even if I do go to the doctor i'm not quite sure I have the sack to ask for such tests and reveal my prior poppy tea usage. From everything I've read even if it is confirmed there is nothing they would be able to do for me other than a kidney transplant.

It doesn't cost that much to go get tested, even without insurance. Can you put a price on your health? Also, it doesn't matter if you went to your doctor and told them you give yourself powdered-concrete enemas on fridays for fun, they are required BY LAW to A: respect your confidentiality (ie they wont/can't call the cops on you) and B: take your situation seriously. I've told my doctor about my poppy pod tea usage, and he actually found it quite interesting that you order such things from the internet, and never so much as reprimanded me or told me not to do that or anything. I've also gone to the same doctor after eating 'bad mushrooms' to get a blood test, because I was scared I hurt myself, and again, complete confidentiality, no law involved, he took me seriously, gave me the care, attention and tests I needed, and made sure I was alright. he even called me on my cell phone a few times after the visit just to "make sure everything was still going ok".

Yes, I have a cool ass doctor, but regardless, all doctors are required by law to help you not get you in trouble. You have nothing to lose by going to the doc, while you have everything to lose by NOT going.

Having said that, I used poppy pod tea for ~1 year, quite frequently for a while, and have sustained no obvious long term health impacts, including my urinary system. Not exactly the same as seed tea, but close enough. Granted I didn't use for a decade though.

Hope it helps!

Urine and blood analysis are probably not that expensive but taking a sample of your kidneys and testing it for exact chemicals probably is not cheap. Heavy metal poisoning can stay in your organs for years without symptoms until you are on your last legs.

I will go and get tested eventually, I am looking into free clinics. If they find nothing wrong with me I will probably tell them my fears but I am thinking like a drug user. I don't want to be labeled a drug seeker and be denied access to pain medications especially if a crippling disease is in store for my future and 2) if a kidney donation is my only chance at survival I don't want to make my chances of getting one minuscule to almost nothing if I reveal I blew mine by self administered drug dumbassery.

I believe someone did a simple test of the most commonly available poppy pods and found no heavy metals. Seeds are a different story. Since most people that use seeds are using them because they have no funds and little access to drugs in the first place I imagine the couple of dozen other chronic poppy seed tea addicts won't do a test any time soon, but I can hope.

To me the research that is out there saying poppy seeds in the U.S. have heavy metals seems weak, only two studies decades apart from foreign countries. But it could just be wishful thinking.

You need to be honest with your doctor. Think about it, many people go to the doctor to have abscesses checked out. They NEED to tell the doctor about their IV drug use in order to obtain proper care.

Hey, I'm not trying to minimize your habit, but in all honesty, it is much less terrifying to tell the doctor about your tea consumption than to tell a doctor you've been injecting hard drugs into your veins, probably. I know how hard it is to be honest about drug consumption to a doctor..its uncomfortable! How can you get the proper care you NEED unless you tell the doctor what's really going on?!

Just be straight forward. Don't lie and say you've consumed less than you actually have. IF there is anything wrong with your body, its better to catch it now than later. Make a doctor appointment and go. You can do this!

To get peace of mind on this issue, you have to go to a doctor. You have 2 options.

1.) Go to a doctor, have them run tests to actually see what is inside your body, and get treatment from there if you need it.

2.) Reach into your memory where you sourced your seeds from, find the manufacturer/supplier, fly there, conduct soil samples on the soil the poppies are growing in, ask the farmer if they practice crop rotation, and perhaps the seeds that you bought at XYZ store back in '08 could have been grown in a different field, study botany to gain knowledge of the process of heavy metal absorption from the soil into the Papaver Somniferum plant, conduct research as to how much of the heavy metals would be extracted from the seeds using your method, average out 6Lbs. times x amount of Cadmium/Mercury/whatever, research if the body can metabolize/get rid of even a small amount of the heavy metals you found, if so, adjust for how much you may have metabolized, and arrive at the final sum of Y amount of heavy metals that should, if your 652 variables are accurate, be in your body.

Getting research on the internet will never tell you the amount of heavy metals that were in YOUR seeds, it's only going to scare the shit out of you and leave you without a definitive answer. If your pipes burst, call a plumber, if you think something is wrong with your body, call a doctor.

I didn't mean to come off like a dick, i can just tell that you're fighting the urge to see a doctor with everything you have, trying to find some holy grail of a research paper with a title like "I bought Yum-Yum brand Poppy Seeds from the Tasty Farm Grocery Store in Walla Walla, Washington and consumed a tea made from 6Lbs. of them for 10 years, thought it fucked me up for life and it turns out i just banged a slutty girl that gave me a UTI, i don't have a bunch of Cadmium in my kidneys.com"

Good luck man, hope for the best =D

Heh, yeah man well since I am in the pacific nw most everyone who is doing seeds here is getting them from the same grocery store. It is more of a crap shoot in the east coast.

I will probably go to a free clinic this week and see what is up. It could just be kidney stones, poppy seeds are chock full of calcium. Hopefully it is not an std or my S.O. has some 'splaining to do.

Go to the doctor.

Internet diagnosis over a forum is NOT going to help.

I understand that, I noted in my first post that I am not looking for a diagnosis there could literally be more than a dozen things wrong with me not related to drug use.

My purpose for starting this thread is to see the relationship between poppy seed tea and health. All the threads that are out are so vague and speculative. I was hoping someone with more smarts could look at everything and try to clarify.

Since poppy seeds are seen as a "loser" drug like nutmeg and diphenhydramine I doubt I will ever get a response, but hey I was worried and curious.

i think they are aware of seed tea ,i was looking at WF's today and they actually said they dont carry it in bulk because its toxic and kids could grab a handful and throw it in there mouth and die...i was like wtf!!??

i was waiting for her to say and oh people get high from it so we dont carry it anymore

I have bumped this thread in hope of some conclusions by the thread starter as it has been a long time...any conclusions my friend?

Have you been tested?

Well he was still alive as of May 18 2013 because he was posting on some MJ-related thread.^ I would also like to see what his feedback is on this subject,^I used seed tea in relatively large amounts (?2 lbs a day) for about 1-1/2 months and that is enough to scare me about the who cadmium thing. I have gone as far as to take chlorella(sp?) for a while and still do a few times a week. It claims to have chelation actions for taking heavy metals (claims it works to rid cadmium) out of the body, though. I also acquired a heavy metal detox that says it removes mercury, cadmium and some other heavy metal. I have yet to use that but am considering it still. There is also the option of chelation therapy with stronger chelating agents under a Dr's supervision. The ? is whether it works very well to rid the metals deposited in the organs.

Still alive. I've had tests and Okay I guess? Just general tests I don't dare reveal my status to doctors. But who knows?

People abused poppy seed tea around here and it is no longer availabe. As a result I have become an alcoholic probalby much worse than opiates!

I no longer care about my kidneys and liver, just keep drinking to soothe the pain... Only marijuana and alcohol available to me and I hate marijuana....
