One dose of the hallucinogenic drug LSD could help alcoholics give up drinking, according to an analysis of studies performed in the 1960s. A study, presented in the Journal of Psychopharmacology, looked at data from six trials and more than 500 patients. It said there was a "significant beneficial effect" on alcohol abuse, which lasted several months after the drug was taken. An expert said this was "as good as anything we've got".

Strange - this is not "news" by any stretch of the imagination.
I have heard about this study before.
I suspect that a good dose of LSD may cure many other things as well. ;)
But it is really too bad that research has been prevented to such a great extent that a paper published more than 40 years ago is making news...:|

this isn't surprising at all. LSD is the best psychedelic out their IMO, and can REALLY help people, addicts or not, turn their life around in many different ways.
So why the fuck do our retarded ass governments make it illegal? because they are stupid as fuck and don't know how to run the world properly. fuck em all they can suck my balls.

LSD broke me free of my seasonal depression, and totally dampened the effects of my regular depression. It also helped me decided what I wanted to do with my life. It helped my friend finally stop selling drugs, and it helped another friend of mine stop taking oxy after a year and a half addiction.

It is an amazing chemical with supernatural abilities, it can help people more in 12 hours than a psychiatrist can in 12 months! One dose of acid or years of harmful and addicting antidepressants? I'll take the acid thank you.

Click the link in the article Slim, the paper was put online yesterday. It's a meta-analysis of some of the old trials.

Yeah sorry, I just read the article :o Still, I think it's great that it's in the news, and that they did the analysis. I vaguely recall seeing some of the old psychedelic studies criticised for methodological flaws, this gives more evidence of its efficacy and makes holding off further research harder to justify.

i think psychedelics are on their way to becoming a very important tool in addiction recovery. Ibogaine has had great success

So keeping LSD illegal for 40-odd years has indirectly caused many people to kill themselves with alcohol… bravo prohibition.

It didn't cure my alcoholism :( . I also know many people who would take a few hit's of real good acid (back when you could find acid here much less good acid) and spend the night on the town drinking.

But then again i guess as with everything else it will only work if you want it to. Nothings going to magically stop the desire to get pissed out of your head 24/7.

Hard to argue with this.
And yet, LSD can give insight into destructive behavior patterns.
Maybe those with a desire to "get pissed out of your head 24/7" (= achieve alternate consciousness patterns?), which may be most of us, will see that alcohol can easily destroy people.
Better to smoke weed, I think, and even better to get high on exercise.

and even better to get high on exercise.

Too bad we cant smoke push ups :( (you can only inject them! lolz)

this makes a lot of sense though, LSD sure changed my life. It stopped me from abusing the shit out of ecstasy/meth anymore... and I think its what made me such a... lets call it knowledgeable... person. I may just think Im smarter than everyone else, but hey, its working for me!

it should be stressed that LSD used in a psycho-therapeutic context is
vastly
different from LSD used in a recreational context.

i've used LSD 9 times over 4.5 months. i only fully utilized it therapeutically on my last trip, even though i thought i was using it at least semi-correctly before. (however, i think those recreational trips helped prepare me for the therapeutic trip)

i went the route of being my own trip-guide/counselor... for most people, i would say this is too dangerous, and an experienced trip guide is vital.

i used the therapy in the context of opiate addiction and the general mental/spiritual/physical stagnation that goes with it (and long term benzo prescription... induces depression and cognitive fog).

when scientists were studying LSD before it became illegal, some therapists reported 100% bad trips and no positive results. and some reported 100% spiritual changes. and so on. set and setting etc are more important than we like to think. our personalities are more plastic than we like to think.

I believe that psychedelics should be explored for therapy of all sorts. Of course caution should be taken but in the long run, psychedelics have a better affect on a persons life (on average) than alcohol. There are people that have horrible experiences with psychedelics but I don't know anyone who hasn't had too many to drink at some point in their lives and erred in some way or another.
