(CBS News) - A new study shows that teens who watch movies featuring scenes of people drinking are more likely to binge drink themselves.

Dr. Reiner Hanewinkel from the Institute for Therapy and Health Research in Kiel, Germany and his colleagues administered a survey to more than 16,000 students between the ages of 10 and 19 who attended public schools in Germany, Iceland, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland and Scotland.

The teens were asked whether or not they had seen a list of over 600 popular films released between 2004 and 2009 in the various countries. Eighty-six of the films featured at least one scene with alcohol.

Then, the teens were asked about their drinking habits and whether they binge drank, defined as having five or more drinks in one occasion. According to the findings published in Pediatrics, the number of teens who drank increased from 11 percent to 25 percent with exposure to movies that featured alcohol. Binge drinking - having four or more drinks in a short period of time - rose from 4 to 13 percent as well.

The Pediatrics study also echoes findings published in the Feb. 20 issue of British Medical Journal Open, which concluded that U.S. teens were twice as likely to drink if they saw movies featuring scenes with alcohol consumption.

"We did not expect this clear finding, but it shows how influential media are in a young person's life," Hanewinkel told CNN. "Hollywood blockbusters are distributed worldwide, and they have an impact not only on U.S. teens but also abroad."

While the survey cannot show whether the students drank before they watched the films, Hanewinkel said in the report he felt that the films were partially at fault for influencing the teens to drink.

I drink not because of movies, but because I prefer the alternative (in my opinion) of cannabis but because I am subject to random drug tests, I can't smoke and so I go with the more destructive option :(

Teens that drink more likely to watch movies with drinking in it.

Exactly. People seek out things that interest them and this is just another case of it.

This might make more sense if it were only movies watched as a younger kid, like 8 and under since parents are the one's either choosing the movie or approving it for the most part. Once the kid is 10-12, their gonna seek out the type of things they want to see whether their parents want them to or not.

I binge drink because what's the point of drinking alcohol if you aren't going to get drunk? If I didn't want to get drunk I would drink some coke. Ya naw what I mean?

Im the same way.......I quit drinking in 2003 but when I did drink, I always drank to get drunk. People would say, drink a glass of wine with your meal or a beer with your sandwich.........I find alcohol to be gross when mixed with food.

Its Saturday night & just watched the movie a movie with alcohol in it where the kids were drunk, lets go out & get hammered...........also watched Dazed & Confused, time to get blazed......although that movie was pretty cool.......:)

correlation does not imply causation

Exactly, that's why I'd be interested to see if the movie I'd make would put people off about IV drug use, or unfortunately make them interested about it themselves.

I think young people are just likely to start binge drinking with their friends, no matter what movies they may or may not have seen.

Well...I'm on spring break which means I've binge drank every day IIRC even though some days I only had 2-3 drinks and others I had more like 8-10.

People who are interested in a particular activity tend to enjoy media that depicts that activity? Mind blown :O
