Opioids Been off opiates for about 6 months but was given 25microgram gel fentanyl patches..

So I went to the doctor because of kidney stones and for whatever reason my doctor decided to give me a few fentanyl patches for pain which makes no sense to me considering they are typically used for long term pain management but I digress. My question is should I expect to catch a good buzz from wearing the patches as prescribed since my opiate tolerance is pretty low. Back in my hay day I would cut the 50ug patches into quarters and put them between my cheek and gum and go cross eyed. I had a pretty high opiate tolerance then.

Really I'm just confused as to why my doc would give me fentanyl to begin with as I'm assuming that even the 25ug patches are pretty potent. But I've never used the patches as they are supposed to be used and don't plan to abuse these patches as I'm only using them to get through the hell of kidney stones (5th battle with them in the last few years) so should I expect some kind of good old fashioned opiate bliss from these or what?

I almost questioned my doctor why he would give me fentanyl rather than just hydrocodone or percocets but bit my tongue because I always loved a good fentanyl high back in my days of opiate addiction.

Does he have reason to believe you are tolerant?

One of those patches slapped on your chest should get you high for two days
 
Well the fact that you didn't say anything to the doc sorta seems like you might need to keep a check on youself while using the patches. I am an opiate addict myself- unless I was 100% into a recovery program (which I am not currently) I would have taken the script and smiled- "thanks doc" lol If you have ever been tolerant to pain meds of any kind your tolerance will usually kick right back in after the first dose wears off- make sure you have enough to truly keep the pain at bay as I know how really awful that kidney stone stuff is- YUCK! Also- not to sound like an ol stick in the mud - but keep an eye on how much you use and "why" - good luck man!!! Hope you feel better soon... kidney stones SUCK BIG TIME!!! ( i know u know this lol)
 
No. He knows that I've had issues with kidney stones before but in the past he would just give me a script for 20 lortab. I know that these patches are only supposed to be used by people with a tolerance for opiates so I'm just confused why he would prescribe them to me when i really needed something for breakthrough pain. At this point I kinda wish he would have just given me hydros or percocet because the pain is intense. I'm hoping the patch kicks in pretty soon but I know they can take hours to really start working, or at least that's what I've read online.
 
Yeah my most recent battle with kidney stones was only a few months ago and I let my girlfriend monitor my hydrocodone use just because I didn't trust myself completely. I went to the hospital that time and they immediately gave me IV dilaudid and it actually scared the shit out of me because of that familiar warm feeling that hits me between the shoulder blades.

But yeah the addict in me didn't have any qualms taking the script for the patches.
 
I'm sorry buddy! I don't know why they didn't give you any IR meds like percocet or norcos. I know that fentanyl is ideal for many kidney related pain but they should know it takes half a day to even start working.
 
Yeah my only option is to go to the ER and I'm not shelling out a grand for a shot of morphine or dilaudid and a script of norcos. I'll just deal with it tonight but at least I know it will get better.
 
You can apply a little heat to where you have the patch applied and it will release a bit more fentanyl faster, but since you're not fentanyl tolerant and it's a (sometimes lethally) potent drug, I have mixed feelings about giving this advice. So don't.

What kind of patches did you get? Mylan? Sandoz? Duragesic?

edit: apparently I didn't make it clear that I was trying to say you CAN apply heat but that I didn't think you SHOULD in your case.

They are duragesic.

I may apply a little heat if it speeds things up a bit but not if there are serious risks involved. Ugh I just don't understand why I wasn't given IR meds. Just a few at least to help me out until the fent really takes hold.

What moron told you to apply heat? Do you want to end up in a box? Applying heat to the patch causes a rapid release of the product, which can lead to overdose. There's a big warning on the box that says not to apply heat, but you thought you'd do it anyways?

Then you should not have given it. Another "harm promotion" post on "Other Drugs." Guess the mods can't read every reckless post. This is why I find this forum an exercise in frustration. Junkies are a dumb lot.
 
It's been about 17 hours and I'm getting very little relief from the patch. Will wait a bit longer but will be calling my doctor as soon as I can.
 
Fentanyl for kidney stones is retarded...........tell your doctor you needs meds that will kill the pain a.s.a.p., not 15 hours after you've applied the patch.

He should script percocets............my uncle has kidney stones & his doctor always has prescribed percs for him.
 
Damn. I was just going to ask a similar question. I recently fell and bruised my tail bone very badly, so I went to a doctor. I had never been there before, so they asked me all sorts of questions. I told them I was on Suboxone. So, after an hour of waiting, he hands me a script for Tramadol and Naproxen. I knew I would get those. But, I wonder, now...will I EVER be abble to obtain (legally) an opiate/opiod pain medication ever?! My goal is not to abuse pain medication. I just wonder if I will EVER get something for pain if I am in a car accident or break a bone? Does anyone know?

If you told the doctor you are taking Subs for past drug abuse, he may flag you & it will be in your records. Some doctors can be really cool & not say anything & prescribe you pain meds & some can be assholes. Most doctors will prescribe what you received for something minor like a bruise on your tailbone.......then again, like I said before, it depends what kind of doctor you get.
