Stop resisting!
The 118-foot, 3,500-year-old bald cypress tree known as "The Senator" in Longwood, Florida, was not only the state's oldest tree, and the fifth oldest tree in the whole country, but also the largest tree of any type east of the Mississippi. To put the tree's age in perspective, it's estimated it first began growing shortly after 1500 B.C. But now it's gone, and a meth-addicted woman has been arrested for burning it down.

The Senator mysteriously burned to the ground on January 16th. The strange fire burned the tree from the inside out, and authorities were baffled.

Now, 26-year-old Sara Barnes has been arrested for the fire. Barnes said she regularly hid out in the Senator's park to get high on meth. She was getting high underneath the Senator when she lit a fire so she could see better. The fire got out of control, and Barnes fled. Though, not before she took a few photos and videos of the fire on her cellphone.

^ Yeah sounds plausible.

Though, not before she took a few photos and videos of the fire on her cellphone.

Barnes apparently told several of her friends about the fire, and eventually one of them tipped off police. Barnes admitted to burning the tree, and police found meth, and a glass pipe in her apartment.

Not the smartest cookie in the jar that's for sure. Some people here in Oz get really worked up over trees, and one that old well i guess she's going to have a lot of hate for along time. Check the comments under the article lol.

You know, if she had been on xanax instead of meth, for the next month we would have huge headlines nation wide "XANAX DESTROYS IMPORTANT TREES AND KILLS CHILDREN!!!!"
But since it's just meth, it isn't worth the headlines.

Surprised she didn't upload the pics and vids to youtube, facebook and myspace AND tell her mates to top it all off.

maybe it was just a human accident. maybe she didn't call the fire dept due to normal human panic.

Sounds like she was a bit of a human accident herself. An accident and panicked is all fine if you are a young kid maybe.

wow she sounds fuckin stupid. yeah im gonna light a fucking fire under a tree while I smoke meth.

sad about the tree. it was really old. what a dumb bitch lol

Maybe she voted for him but he didn't didn't deliver on his promise to root out the cause of her decaying teeth.

I'll just shut up now.
Haha! I had a similar thought as I read the story. DC doesn't even have any senators to burn down. :P

That's one Senator that should have stuck around. He never said much, and even though many probably stared at his view in disbelief, he was able to overlook them. Rest in pieces Woody.

OK I'm done.

It's very sad to see something thousands of years old gone due some careless meth-head. Thing like this is what give drug users a bad name, and it's nothing PLUR about this act.

Why is everyone focussing on the fact she's a meth-head in this thread? If it was someone smoking a joint or a cigarette who did it, would you be putting as much emphasis on their drug use?

This would all be solved if she had a safe place to use...she obviously wasn't thinking clearly and chose to make this poor decision but it wouldn't have been made if her problem was accepted by society and she had a solution.

This. The Senator was another victim of the war on drugs. RIP, even though you had no brain or nervous system :(

Just imagine if - or perhaps when - someone burns down the 5000 (I could be wrong on that age) year old redwoods. That's gonna be a sad story indeed.
