^ Alex, I'm so sorry to hear that! I appreciate how hard it is with her not wanting to go to the ER, but if she is in that much pain I really think you need to get some medical attention now. The other amnesia, astasia-abasia and ptosis also definitely need checking too, even if she has perked up now - could be many things, inc too many barbs ofc, but you do want to rule out something like a stroke.. even a doctor would find it hard over the internet, I do think she needs to be checked out :( I'm sorry, am sure that's not what you wanted to hear.. but better safe than sorry ey? Also it sounds like she certainly could do with some pain relief and wouldn't be up to work tomorrw anyway.. I would take her to the ER ASAP, call an ambulance..

edit: what the others said...

Good luck <3

I am waiting for my grandfather to get home, which should be soon, since I called him. I know she should go to the ER, but it isn't exactly in my hands to call an ambulance. That decision will hopefully be made when my grandfather gets home.

The thing that concerns me is ruling out a stroke (and the fact that she is writhing in pain) - time is of the essence in that case, and if your grandma is really sick then I am sure your grandfather would understand you getting her medical help ASAP.. <3

Appreciate that this is a tricky situation and we don't know how unwell she is via the net, but from your description it sounds like she needs to be seen by a doctor sooner rather than later :\

Well, unfortunately, my efforts to in persuading her to go to the ER were futile, as were the efforts of my grandfather for the same. I tried explaining that her state was markedly different than other times when she has been in pain, however, my grandfather thinks she is being histrionic, and he has decided to let her decide to stay home. I really don't think this is wise, but he has the final word in the matter. She does have histrionic tendencies, but like I said today was different. We will be checking in with her to make sure she is okay throughout the night. This wait and see approach is reckless IMO, but I cannot override his decision to allow her to stay home. I am concerned, but not anxious (thanks to my meds). Even if she is fine tonight, I worry that the addition of the tramadol to her barb and benzo habits will prove dangerous. She doesn't really like opiates, but has stated that the tramadol helps her and she tolerates it well.

Well you can't force an adult (who has capacity) to get medical help if they don't want to Alex, sounds like you and your grandfather did all you can and are keeping a close eye.. but if she seems to become unwell overnight don't hesitate to call an ambulance.. could you persuade her to see her doctor in the morning rather than go to the ER? Although I guess it is the weekend, hmm.. glad you have your grandfather there too to help so you're not trying to work out what to do on your own.

I imagine it is really tricky knowing what to do about her addiction too, is she prescribed those meds?

If you want to talk this through and get some more advice/support about this I really recommend making a thread in The Dark Side forum - loads of wise people in there who can really help. Of course you can talk to us too :) but TDS is excellent for this kind of thing. Take it easy and I hope your grandma is okay <3

I appreciate your concern, I think I will make a thread in TDS at some point, maybe not tonight, though. To answer your question she is prescribed Xanax, Fiorinal, and we have tramadol rx'd to me and the dog, even though the dog no longer needs it. She is rx'd # 120 Xanax 1 mg monthly, and # 100 Fiorinal monthly. I am also rx'd benzos, and so is my grandfather, so we have a lot around. She saw her doc yesterday, and was apparently fine then. I don't know, she is just in overall poor health. She has hypertension and migraines, and all of the other maladies are out of speculation. She has been seeing different specialists and her GP with seemingly good feedback, but who knows what she isn't telling me or my grandfather for that matter.

Ah I'm sorry, that is a tricky situation indeed - glad she is seeing doctors, it is hard when you don't know exactly what is going on with someone though. All you can really do is be there for her and encourage her to get help if she needs it.. one of the hardest things is learning what we can do and what we can't do to help someone when we are worried about them :\ She is lucky to have someone like you who clearly cares about her as much as you do. I hope she is okay tomorrow and that she can get help with her health/habits, you take it easy too, it's really hard worrying about someone you love. Take care <3

Anytime, glad I could help! I'd speak to your grandfather too (if you haven't already) about how concerned you are - this isn't something you should be worrying about on your own <3

Alex, I'm sorry to hear about your grandmother. I think the others had very good advice.
Also, and I'm sure it may make her mad at you, but you can call the police and explain her situation and they can enforce her to at least get checked out. Even if just by the EMTs. I know this bc my husband did this to me when I was in pain from pancreatitis and we weren't even married when he did this. Anyway the EMTs decided I needed help and took me against my will.
I later thanked him for doin it as we found out my liver enzymes was up to 46,000+. Basically a few more hours I would've died.
Best if luck to you all!

Thanks, babygurl, she is "okay" as of now, not showing any indication of absolute urgency.

I said I'd never IV anything unless a medical professional was doin it to me....yeah fuck that! I wouldn't mind shootin up some dilaudid right now!

Sounds like you've picked up a bit from the other day, hows things over the pond?
