Heroin What makes the first time for a person slamming heroin so desirable?

I know a person and his friends, they all do heroin on a regular basis, and my friend can go through bags of it per day (I think he calls each bag a gram, so 3 grams or so). We caught up today after months - he moved - and each time finishes his hit or injecting it or whatever the term is for that, he always says without fail: "That was so much better than an orgasm." He nods out and falls asleep a lot though?

It piqued my interest, but I don't want to test it out myself so much because I'm already on Suboxone... I'm already seeing an addiction specialist for opioid painkillers dependance, so I don't trust myself to explore the grandfather of opiates... and I get drug tested every time I go in to see him. So this is where you come in, Bluelighters; I was hoping some of you might be able to answer these questions that have arised :) :

1. What does it feel like to slam heroin for the first time - like, what exactly does the high feel like?
2. What's so special about that first time that people like my friend and his dealers and "friends
of his, so to speak, will spend all their lives and money "chasing the dragon"?
3. How come the next high never feels the same? Most drugs do, either for a long time or only the next few times or feel exactly the same all the time but with varying trips... so why is heroin the exception to the rule?
4. And how is heroin so enjoyable at all, when the side effects are so horrible? To me, the constant sweating, itching, nodding off, and slurred speech outweigh the benefits.
5. This might be a dumb question, but do you kick even if it's only your first time? Or does it take a while, like other opiates, for it to take control of you to the point where you DO kick if you don't have it?

I guess that's basically it, I got curious. I've always been somewhat fascinated by it, I suppose for it's reputation, but I've never really bothered to wonder WHY it has the reputation it does. Especially because it's known as this all-power King of Opiates, the one that traps everyone and they have no control over it. And I know that for most people, yes that is true... but there are exceptions to the rule, people who either don't like it because of the side effects or it's to intense or whatever or who don't feel more of the good sides than the bad. Anyone want to enlighten me? :D

I snort it on occasion, and honestly, I hate the fact that it makes me so tired. Oxycodone is much better for analgesia and productivity.

Sorry that I can't chime in on anything needle-related however, as I'm quite opposed to points myself.

I'm assuming it is something to do with the "rush" that is involved with IV use. And unlike uppers like cocaine and meth, which do have great euphoria, but are then followed by the most terrible, horrible, dysphoric, anxiety-panic ridden come-down ever, I don't think heroin or opiates in general have a "come-down", at least not an anxiety-panic one like uppers. I think that's the most addicting factor, the crazy rush, followed by content warm euphoria, without any terrible comedown...

At least not until you are physically addicted lol... then the addicted I assume turns into avoiding the mother of all come downs (besides maybe benzo's, and alcohol dependence)... dope sickness. So people begin to justify buying because they know it will get rid of their flu like symptoms so they can be normal...

Exactly :$

1. I have only IV'd opiates a handful of times, and I don't like the rush. To me, it feels like a light pulsating vibration running through your body, and it tightens up the body a bit. The first time it happened to me I honestly clenched up and grabbed a hold of the arms of the chair I was in, but was bugged out by the feeling and didn't enjoy it at all. I tried again a few hours later figuring that since I knew what to expect I would be able to enjoy it instead if it just making me feel weird, but not dice. I've had 3-4 rushes because I didn't like them so the other times I IV'd I only used a small dose, or did oxycodone which doesn't produce a rush for me. The rush took a good 20 seconds to hit me, and it was just weird to me, and I couldn't wait for it to be over once it started.

I have read different opinions on if people actually enjoy the rush or not. Some say that it's more that the rush indicates that they are going from being dope sick, to having a euphoric high, in a matter of seconds.

2 & 3. I think that equal rushes can be experienced over time, so I take "chasing the dragon" to mean looking for that first high, not rush. I don't know how much I agree with the "chasing the dragon" theory. I think that once a persons innocence for a drug is gone, that is when they may find that they can't achieve the same euphoria as you once did. There definitely is a time though when peoples tolerance gets up there, and they are indeed chasing a high that they will likely not experience again without taking a long break. Again though, I think part of it being less euphoric is because those people are likely no longer in a good place in their lives, and are fighting a losing battle with addiction.

4. I'm not one to really enjoy the nod (I don't like the rush or nod, what kind of junkie am I? ;) ) since I prefer to take smaller doses that stimulate me. Most of the negative side effects go away over time though. I still itch, but not that much, and I don't sweat unless I am high to the point of getting sick. The nodding is dose dependent, so if the person likes the nod they will take the appropriate dose to achieve it, but if not, they will take enough to get high, but not nod. Sometimes you can't help it either way though, since your tolerance or the potency of the heroin may have changed.

5. Opiates are opiates. You will only kick if you have taken in frequent enough to cause dependence. There are prescription opiates that are more potent than heroin, so really the only difference is that heroin is a "street drug" with an unknown purity unless you have it lab tested. I find little to no difference between heroin and hydrocodone for example, other than the obvious difference in potency. I dose heroin accordingly to basically mimic the high that I used to get from hydrocodone and oxycodone, but for financial and tolerance reasons, I choose heroin to get those desired effects. If I were given a "blind test" in which I received an equivalent dose of hydrocodone one day, oxycodone the next, and heroin the day after, I probably wouldn't be able to tell you which drug I took each day (considering I didn't taste the drug obviously). So yea, tolerance to heroin acts pretty much the same as tolerance to other opiates. I do find that it becomes easier to be dependent on opiates after each time you withdraw. Like in the beginning it would take a month of use to get dependent, but over time it would only take 2 weeks, then 1 week, then 5 days of use until you started to feel withdrawals.

I love the rush of heroin, but there are better ones IMO, cocaine is my favorite.

The best way that I can describe the feeling of a heroin "rush" is, this feeling of enormous reliefe. Youre body kind of clenches up for a second, as if it's carrying some enormous weight, and then you feel released of it. Often my legs would feel very weak, and my head would involuntarily fall back and I would see stars for a few seconds. There is also this taste/smell that would hit my mouth and nose about two seconds after the injection, that for some reason felt as if a beautiful flower had sprouted up in my brain.

I wouldn't say that it is impossible to achieve the same feeling as the first time you inject. The first time I shot heroin, I was in an inpatient rehab, so there were obviously better highs that came later on. As long as you have enough money to satiate you're ever-raising tolerance, you will be able to get the same quality of high or rush that you experienced the first time, or at least that's how it's been for me.

And like Tommyboy said, dope is dope. As far as the actual euphoria achieved from heroin, it's really not so different from oxycodone or any other opiate, and IMO its not anymore physically addicting either. The reason their are so many horror story's about heroin is that it's a black market product. You never know the purity, and you never know what it's cut with. If heroin was a prescribed pain medication still in the united states, I doubt it would retain the air of infamy that it has.

Well I actually ended up having that same friend hook me up with a shot. I was watching him do it and I was already curious so I decided what the hell, my life sucks right now anyway, might as well try it. I guess I can see how some people would like it, but I personally didn't. It made me too itchy and the fact that I felt like I was floating and that I was seeing double the ENTIRE time was making me too nauseous to enjoy it. I guess he accidentally gave me too much for my first time. Anyway, I'm not a fan, and today I feel hungover, and I couldn't even drive home because of how tired I was and because my double vision was so horrible. I had to sleep in my car for a while first, and then drive to a friend's house nearby, and the whole time I was driving I had to slap myself in the face literally every two seconds to wake myself up just a little bit and refocus my vision.

All I know is that I didn't feel anything at first, and then right in the middle of me asking my friend, "Why don't I feel high?", I felt like I was literally floating. It reminded me of the feeling you get when you're about to be put under anesthesia and they inject you with an insane dose of Valium. Except instead of only feeling it for a minute or two, I felt it fooooreeveerr.
Ew it was too intense. How people get hooked on that, I have no idea. Glad I got that out of my system though.

I think the only benefits there are to speak of is that I didn't think about my problems from the second I did it up until now, and even now thinking about them, they don't bother me. Also my anxiety is gone, and it's the next day, when usually I have to take a Valium the second I wake up. It's well into the day, and I have zero anxiety. This shit's better than Valium for anxiety IMO, but I'm not about to get hooked on it just for that... and I could do without the extreme fatigue and dry mouth and lethargicness... all I really want to do is sleep, and I had plans tonight... ones that are no longer going to happen, and all because I wanted to experiment with what slamming dope feels like.

Guess that answered my questions anyway hah. Thanks for the responses guys.

It feels similar to the first time MDMA/ecstasy hits you - not the same feeling - but the way it hits you

You get this overwhelming 'rush' that blankets your body within a few seconds (as it kicks in)

You feel euphoric, but extremely calm. For the next 15 minutes or so you just want to relax, smoke cigarettes etc.

Because it is the best feeling out of any drug I have ever tried, and I have done almost all you can buy on the streets. The best is when you are strung out and sick as fuck and your fixin yourself up with your normal shot and you get it in and realize the bags you got were straight fiiirreee and it feels like you got kicked in the chest and your whole body has pins and needles and you can't help but wanna scratch your face off the pins n needles hurt so bad...sounds terrible when I read it back to myself haha but oh man is it THE BEST...why am I on suboxone again LMAO....

Pins and needles? what the hell?

IME, it's a general dissatisfaction with life, irritation with everyone and everything around you, hollow, empty feeling where the heart should be, tears behind the eyes, depression and an incredibly arrogant attitude. They tend to destroy relationships through those means. These symptoms didn't manifest in the first couple of years of occasional usage but as time went on, they got worse.

exactly! if you been thru that then you know what kind of feeling it gives you. hahah why am i on suboxone too! good thing you didnt like it your for your first time, reading that made say how in the world can someone not like the feeling of a rush? but hey everybody likes their own kind of high and certain drugs fit to certain people. for me i hate all uppers besides E, and love all opiates :) well not anymore but i still have a crush on em haha

Uhhhh...What makes having an orgasm with a beautiful person of the opposite sex so desireable...
Hint: it helps if the Diamorphone is beautiful...

Well, a virgin wouldn't know the answer to that question either, now would they? No. The same way I was a "virgin" to IV heroin when I made this thread. That's why people ask questions, because they haven't experienced it and don't know. That's what this site is for. It's not for giving people vague answers to legitimate questions, which helps no one. Way to promote harm reduction, dude. Answers like that are the reason I DON'T miss moderating this site.

Thanks for the legit answers, everyone else. :)

I know exactly what you mean...the pins and needles thing. I remember the first time I felt it...it hurt so bad, and itched like crazy.....but I loved it! Haven't felt that in a while. I am getting a lot this week...maybe i can feel it again

the rush the first time you inject is one of the best feelings you will ever experience

That's completely subjective. For me it was far from one of the best feelings I have experienced. I didn't like it so it was more like one of the more unpleasant feelings I have experienced.

This was wonderfully put.

Also, the first rush wasn't the best IME, the shot that takes you out of w/d always has the best rush ('specially if it's enough to get you high and not just well).
