Alprazolam, Lorazepam and Lormetazepam

Hi,

I'm currently prescribed 2mg alprazolam a day, however I'd like to change it to either Lorazepam or Lormetazepam, even though your benzo equivalent chart says alprazolam is twice as potent. I'd prefer lormetazepam since it is a rare benzo, and have sort of made it my mission to try as many different benzos as possible.

Lorazepam I have ingested before, but never really felt the effects of, hence it is on my list. I am not physically addicted to benzos; I don't take them every day. If we for a minute turn a blind eye to the fact that this may not be the idea that earns me the nobel prize, I do have a couple of questions:

[1] What are the major differences between lorazepam and lormetazepam?
[2] If this was in the interest of treating the symptoms that benzos usually are prescribed for, which of the two would you choose?
[3] I know your benzo chart says that 1mg lorazepam = 1mg lormetazepam, but is one of them slightly more potent in some areas, like sedation for instance?

For a final note, I will not be acquiring these drugs illegally. Like I said, I am already prescribed alprazolam, and I am confident I can convince my doc to prescribe me a less potent benzo, if that is the case - if not, please don't hesitate to correct me.

Have a nice upcoming weekend all!
deXo :)

Going on a 'quest' to try all the benzos doesn't sound like the best possible idea.

1) They feel quite similar, except lormetazepam feels more hypnotic/sedating, and a little euphoric. Lorazepam, for me, simply causes relaxation, relief from anxiety/panic/stress, and sometimes sleep, although it isn't nearly as good as lormetazepam. Lormetazepam is, in my view, an equally potent anxiolytic and a better hypnotic (and more recreational).
2) Benzos are "usually" prescribed for a variety of different things. I suffer periodically from anxiety/panic disorder and insomnia. For anxiety/panic, I would take lorazepam - lasts longer than alprazolam, isn't as amnesic, and doesn't develop a tolerance or addiction nearly as quickly for me. It also isn't as sedating as lormetazepam which may not be suitable for daytime anxiety management. For insomnia, I would take lormetazepam.
3) As I have just described, lormetazepam is a considerably stronger hypnotic than alprazolam or lorazepam.

So, if you actually require benzos for anxiety/panic, which is what alprazolam is prescribed for, then I'd recommend lorazepam (if the alprazolam isn't working and you feel the need to change it). If not, then lormetazepam's a fun one to try. You shouldn't, but who am I to judge.

Lormetazepam which is a 3-hydroxy hypnotic benzo similar to temazepam. It is an hypnotic, not generally prescribed as an anxiolytic. Lorazepam is also part of the 3-hydroxy family, but is not an hypnotic. Lormetazepam is the methylated version of lorazepam or the chlorinated version of temazepam (take your pick - both are parent drugs to lormetazepam). They are all very closely related, but as hypnotics, lormetazepam and temazepam are stronger sedatives-hypnotics than lorazepam.

If alprazolam isn't working there are countless others that might - lorazepam is one, clonazepam is another, there's also bromazepam and diazepam which work incredibly well. I highly doubt you will get lormetazepam for daytime use as an anxiolytic.
