Wanted to hear people's opinion on this.

I take morphine every now and then. It seems to work out in cycles. I'll take it 2 days in a row, skip a day, another day or two, skip a day.. then, afraid of building "dependence," and losing overall amusement with the drug, I won't touch it for a month or more.

Any of you guys take opiates or the like but aren't addicted? Do you think it's possible to keep it up?

I like playing with fire.. but do you consider it inevitable that it will burn me eventually?

Yes- I consider it inevitable. I was once where you are, now I am addicted to Heroin. Never in my wildest imagination would I have imagined.

Obviously there ARE some 'success' stories, but it is not common to use them recreationally for any decent period of time w/o developing a physical dependence.

I feel if you go about it with a set plan like, dose this many times a week or not this day/etc, your more likely to fail than if you simply know your not allowed to overuse them and just touch them once or twice a month(IMO when your planning to use them extensively its already clear you love them and that sooo....). If you want to not become addicted you need to make sure there aren't continuous patterns of use even if there not extreme IMO. Its definitely possible to use anything without becoming addicted, its simply difficult and you must really weigh the pro's/con's of it and yourself carefully(don't let the chemical fool you!). If you know its hard to handle, just quit while your ahead because the probability IMO has already fallen somewhat far out of your radius that you won't eventually lose the game.

Hey OP:

I personally don't know much about taking pain killers in a recreational manner, but I think you might get more response if this was put in Other Drugs, where there are other threads on pain killers.

I'm gonna go ahead and move this to OD. Let me know if you'd rather it be back here, OP.

once you take enough of them nothing else but benzos really is comfortable for the most part

some shit is alright but harder stims make me uncomfortable and i abused opiates for 8-9 years

No, I don't think that it's inevitable. We've been taught and made to believe that opiates are just the single most addictive substances in the world and no one is strong enough to use opiates recreationally and it's only a matter of time and so on and so forth...

It's not true. Yes, opiates are addictive, but no, not everyone will become an addict. This is what I tell people: It's not smart to experiment with substances that are so addictive because on the off-chance you are one prone to dependency and addiction, well, you've just fucked yourself, and you're in for a real tough time.

I take opiates ~6 times a year at most, and at least a week in between using, and twice a month max. They're nice, but I don't find them interesting enough that I think I'd become addicted.
I feel like I'm playing heavily with fire when it comes to benzos though.

It's definately possible. I fucked around with heroin for about eight months without getting a real habit. Once I started shooting it though, I sort of lost control. I agree with what verso said, and think that it is possible to use opioids without forming a dependance, but we live in a culture in which heroin and other narcotics are so stigmatized, that it is very hard to not adhere to the "belief" that using without forming an eventual dependance is impossible. Drug treatment centers also instil this same philosophy, which leads to a lot of self fullfiling prophecies "oh well, I used once, my day count has been reset. Might as well throw it all down the drain".

It becomes hard to recognize whether you're behavior is actually I response to the drug itself, or if it's caused by a belief that's been hammered into you're head so many times that it becomes a truth.

I know that when I use heroin however, that I can not control it. I just sometimes wonder if that's really due to some kind of mental, physical and spiritual affliction, or if its some twisted form of folding under the pressure of our society's attitude and media portrayal of the use of narcotics. One thing is for certain, opiates are incredibly addicting, and playing games like dosing two days own a row, skipping a day or two, then dosing again will most likely eventually lead to either a physical and/or mental dependance. The only people that I know who can use without forming a habit only indulge once a month or so. Even once a week is playing with fire.

Quit while you are ahead. I was the same way you were. I liked playing with fire. It started out with pain pills, but they got expensive so I moved on to snorting bags of dope. I got fed up with snorting 5 bags in the course of a few hours so I went to shooting dope. A diem bag of dope had me high for 12 hours and gave a rush like no other. Then that turned into buying 20 bags at a time to keep me high for a few days IF I budgeted it. But you never do, you might save a bag for the morning so your not sick when you are scheming how to get high.

You can take opiates recreationally for a while but it catches up with you and turns into full blown addiction. All it takes is a bad day at work, a death of a loved one, a breakup, some kind of emotional catalyst. It may not be today, it may not be tomorrow, it may not be 4 years from now, but someday, someday you will wake up addicted.

Take it from me bro. I was a heroin addicts for seven years. Chipped successfully for two. Bundles a day. Fingers of dope. Sleeves. Making runs to cop 5 times in a day. Saw some fucked up shit, people OD'ing, addicts copping and shooting up with a child in the backseat, people shot, stabbed, beat, sick and suffering... Now I'm on 100mg of Methadone daily and thank The Emperor I avoided jail, hepatitis, HIV, and really hurting my friends and family.

I was a recreational opioid user with out any sort of physical dependence for 8 years and the last year I actually built up a opioid tolerance due to me falling into it's hold. Life started to fall apart and I broke my rules (never use while depressed, never use to avoid problems, never use more than two the three times a week, especially if taking weekly). I started taking it when I was falling into a depression, I started calling up my dealer when I'd have a shitty day, and taking it everyday I could till my money was out. It's easy to fall into a dependence, but it is possible to keep it recreational with no abuse. Just build rules and stick to them. You'll reap the benefits. Low tolerance, and minimal loss of the magic. I have a bunch of friends that'll take them when they get in there possession, but never searches them out. It'll be a wonderful occasion for them. It's not as exciting when you have a tolerance. Especially when you struggle to get that nod that you've been dying for.

I can until I start to not give a fuck which tends to happen eventually.... And before I know it I'm hustling for money and doing crazy asenine shit just to fight off withdrawals. Also that's when I start losing friends and not accomplishing anything because I rather go and get high. I wish I just remained clean because if I keep using just "occasionally" I'm going to go back to being the person I didn't ever want to be. This doesn't happen to everyone but it is common.

Thing is Fade, most opiate users would continue down this road if they had the unlimited money to spend............

That is pretty true... I know I would. Actually even if I didn't have money I still would. I would just find a way to get money. Yet, I have stopped at times because I still remember I want to do something with my life.

We recently had someone posting in here saying how they were very disciplined and planned to only use once a month to avoid getting addicted. Despite our warnings, they still insisted they could keep to this schedule to avoid getting addicted, and how they do so many other healthy activities that drugs weren't really a priority. They ended up getting strung out pretty quickly, after swearing up and down that they had self control and it wouldn't happen to them.

I agree. My use didn't get that heavy, but it's still not something you want to risk getting into. It also took me a few years before I got addicted, then I went the suboxone route, then tried chipping again, then eventually got hooked again. I've cut down a lot lately, but it's still not worth it unless it's like once a month or less that you can manage to hold it to from the get go.

This topic has been covered a lot on BL, so that's all I'm saying about it in this thread. I've discussed it extensively in other threads, such as this one.

That is simply not true. If that was the case for you, I am sorry.

It's certainly possible; it has worked out fine for me and my wife (once a week, moderate dose-even with unlimited supply) for many, many years.

Now whether you want to take the chance to see whether you can handle it or not, that is up to you...

Best of luck with whatever you decide.

You may be able to continue using in this manner indefinitely, or as guido mentioned, you may run into a catalyst which results in more frequent use. There is no way of knowing which will happen until you run the course of your life.

I'm definitely not saying that it is inevitable, but you have a much higher chance of becoming a daily user if you are already an occasional user, as opposed to someone that does not use at all. This may happen 5, 10, 20 years from now, or never. This becomes a question of whether someone wants to risk the chance of becoming addicted by trying to use occasionally, or give it up altogether and eliminate the risk.

I've been alright with self control. I did go through five Vicodin and an OC80 over three or four days, but I don't really have access to opiates all that often and it's the first time I've had any in a few months. I'm thinking this is really the only thing holding me back, which is scary to think about.

It def sucks keeping your use under control or to stop using altogether if you have a steady, solid connect. I live near a huge open air heroin market and I know at any timeof the day, all it would take for me to score good dope would be to get the money and a way to the spot.
