There's story around this particular quote that makes it a bit more unique, so I'll share it.
Around where I lived for a while, there was a big, mostly-buried water tower in a neighborhood not far from the town. If you sat on top of this thing you could see the whole idyllic Western valley below; you could see the lights of the town glowing at night, the headlights and taillights dancing up and down the freeway (which ran perfectly perpendicular to your viewpoint), and if you looked up you could see a wonderful mountain sky, always filled with far more stars than any person would care to count. It was, in many ways, the perfect view.
This particular location was well-known among the teenagers because it was quite fun to climb up to it and share a bowl or two of cheap, high quality Rocky Mountain herb. At some point somebody brought a bench up to that concrete circle, and it's been there ever since. There were few other things up here, save for a small, raised access hatch, a waist-high ventilation pipe, and a forest green maintenance box that was raised about two or three feet above the ground and measured about four feet by two feet by six inches, give or take.
One day, me and two friends climbed to the spot where they prepared to share a decent-sized bowl while I catered to my anxiety disorder and simply treated myself to a cigarette. As I tilted my head to light the little white cylinder (a difficult task in the mountain winds) I noticed something written on the box. The message, drawn artistically in black ink, echoed through my head as I read the words aloud. I still don't know why, but for some unexplainable reason, discovering those words at that precise moment at that particular time in my life still makes me smile to this day. They mean a lot to me, and though it is not the most unique combination of words ever put together, nor the most powerful, I find them inspiring and uplifting in the most peculiar, strange, and thought-provoking way. The writing on the box, in carefully-planned pen strokes, read:
"Sex, drugs, and rock 'n roll,
weed, speed, and birth control,
life's a bitch and then you die,
so fuck the world, and let's get high."
I know quite definitively that these words are the key to someone's happiness, and that realization makes them all the more powerful.
