Mr. Nice.

Rhys Ifans as the infamous drug smuggler Howard Marks.

Very interesting film IMO. <3 Fascinating story. =D Ifans seems to be a 100 % ideally perfect fit for the role. David Thewlis is also awesome as the larger than life IRA loon with whom the smuggler becomes involved. A must see film.

If you enjoyed the film that much, i think you will love the book. Its an excellent read. Im just guessing you havent read it. Obviously, most books are better than the movies and this is no different. More information, character building etc. Highly recommend it.

"The Isle of Man Tourist Trophy is the greatest motorcycle road race in the world, the ultimate challenge for rider and machine. It has always called for a commitment far beyond any other racing event, and many have made the ultimate sacrifice in their quest for victory."

Cool, will check it out. Not a fan of this or F1 either but the Senna doc was outstanding

The 7 Faces of Dr. Lao

A mysterious circus comes to a western town bearing wonders and characters that entertain the inhabitants and teach valuable lessons.

Watched this last night, its an absolute gem from the golden age of cinema. This film attempted to enlighten the viewer, not make their head spin by sending out mixed and dark miserable messages like most modern cinema.

PS. if anyone knows anymore films like this please post them!

Watched Refn's Pusher (the original Danish version) last night having been impressed by Valhalla Rising. Excellent film.

I don't understand how it's taken me so long to find out about Refn. Amazing he wrote and directed this when he was only 24.

very minor spoilers about overall plot and theme follow.

NSFW:
It's about a mid-level drug dealer in Copenhagen who gets into debt with his supplier and tracks his downward spiral as his attempts to rescue the situation grow ever more desperate. I don't know this "scene" but it seems pretty realistic. While Frank can be a nasty piece of work he occasionally shows compassion and humanity. But it is his status as a victim of circumstance which sucked me into sympathising with him, he seems to have no option but to push ahead with his schemes, trampling on others, to save his skin. Refn leads you to identify (albeit reluctantly) with Frank then throws him into situations with no real hope of success, leaving you more and more horrified by the brutality of his existence and the inevitability of it all.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011)

Tinker-Tailor-Soldier-Spy-Poster-Quad.jpg

Based on the classic novel of the same name, the international thriller is set at the height of the Cold War years of the mid-20th Century. George Smiley (Gary Oldman), a disgraced British spy, is rehired in secret by his government - which fears that the British Secret Intelligence Service, a.k.a. MI-6, has been compromised by a double agent working for the Soviets

Enjoyed

good call watson's. Dl'ing.

Did you see the original 80s series? I have it on VHS I think. First class.

Edit: actually it was 1979, I was 6 when it was first shown but I'm sure it was repeated in the 80s.

Watched 'Eagle Eye' on TV last night starring Shia labouef.Thought it was good film plenty of action all the way through.

I didn't particularly like Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. It wasn't very riveting at all, had zero suspense, and just constantly tries to inject drama into dull scenes. But the main problem for me was that it was too dark and I kept getting the characters mixed up. It does have good acting though.

My old man was telling me about this the other day so I downloaded it to keep him happy. Worth watching then? Looks a bit dated.

Of course it looks dated. It is 33 years old, a bit like your frequency. Technology typically improves over time but the skills and style involved in acting, directing, producing etc. are to an extent timeless so it's often worth watching old films, tv series, movies just like it's often worth reading old books. Most of the great science fiction films are from the 70s, for example (actually the 80s too).

So the main problem was you (if you mean "dark" in the sense of "mood"), your eyesight, or the controls on your TV?

Yeah, of course. But not all Films/TV shows stand the test of time. Some are very of the time when they were made and don't age well. Still though, I'll check it out at some point.

Cool, but now I have to qualify what I said because we all have nostalgia / rose-tinted spectacles for things which we remember from when we were kids! So YMMV ;)

I think Monty Python looks dated and I have nostalgia for it. I watch sketches from time to time and they are still pure unadulterated gold. I believe that's because it is good.

Python was very different to the other sketch shows of that era though. I suppose that's what I mean when I say some things look (and I should have said feel as well) a bit dated whereas others don't. You have those films/shows that play it safe and jump on whatever topics, fashions, or styles are trendy at the time which don't really tend to age well and then you have those shows/films that are very unique and stand out. Those are often the ones which have a timeless quality about them, like you were saying. I think some of the acting in the older stuff can be a bit over dramatised as well. Nowadays it feels more genuine and believable.

I watched this the other night. It is a really harrowing, well made, film. It's very psychological, and extremely brutal. I wouldn't say it was enjoyable to watch, but it was an experience that I think you guys would like?

might check it out,

finally got around to watching Bronson last night... what a fucking nutter

Bronson was alright. This guy shits all over Bronson though... Don't watch this on ket or a comedown whatever you do mate :D I might even go as far as to say it is in my top ten films ever.

By the way, did anyone ever get around to watching Kontrol or Celda 211? Kontrol is made for ket, and Celda is made for weed.
