Well, about 5 hours ago around 7 o clock, i prepped up a IV shot of Oxy, and i must have used a bad cotton, cause after about an hour of nodding out, i woke up with the worst headache ive ever had and was shivering and shaking uncontrollably, i kept falling asleep, and waking back up during this time, and then about 3 hours ago, i finally came out of my sedation( still shivering and nautious like a motherfucker) and was able to crawl into bed to sleep..well i just woke up (3 hours later) and while i dont feel the cotton fever sickness anymore, i still feel somewhat shitty, so i decided i was gonna prep up another IV shot to try to feel better, and ive already tooken 2 shots and still do not really feel the opiates and im already at double my normal dose..does anyone know if its the cotton fever making me not feel the opiates, and why?

^ no idea, but be careful - it may be that you can't feel the pleasurable effects because you still feel shitty from the cotton fever, but if you keep having repeated shots you will overdose. I really would not have any more - call it a day, accept it's not going to work and wait til tomorrow.

In the future, get yourself some micron filters to avoid cotton fever!

Im sorry you're feeling crap and the oxy isn't working.. hope you feel better soon. Please don't do any more shots though :)

It might be psychological.
the fact that your last shot made you sick is making the others feel less than what you expect because your mind is associating the sickness with the cotton which you used again. maybe short term tolerance

are you feeling any better now?

A friend of mine once got cotton fever and thought he od's. I drove him to the er and waited in the room with him (unlike some people who would just drop u off at the emergency room door and dip out). Luckily it ended up just being cotten fever. Scared the crap out of him and me both

I am so surprised to hear about so many people getting cotton fever. Is it the dope your shooting or do you have bad habits as far as cleanliness goes? Cotton fever means you are introducing some bacteria to your bloodstream your body is not able to fight off.

I don't see how that would 'block' further opiate usage. It's definitely something mental.

I think a lot of people are also under the impression that cotton fever is actually getting a small fiber of cotton into your bloodstream after drawing it up and not having to do with sanitizing the area. I dont know if you guys do think that, but many actually do

so weird, back when i use to get cotton fever the only thing that helped was a fresh shot of dope

It is confusing and after (quite extensive) searching all I can find are papers stating completely opposing views, haha.. The general opinion seems to be that it is a bug (Enterobacter agglomerans) which grows on the cotton plant entering the blood stream, causing you to become sick while your immune system deals with it, then subsiding as the bugs are destroyed. Cotton feaver doesn't usually develop into full-blown septicaemia - although it can, so if the symptoms are not easing or you are getting more unwell please get help straight away - especially if you have persistant high temperatures, feel dizzy/dehydrated/woozy, aren't peeing and have persistant rigors/shakes.

Essentially, the symptoms fit with a shower of bacteria entering the blood stream, the body rallying it's immune system and taking care of it before it develops into sepsis - but making you feel pretty shitty while it does so. It could be caused by a wide range of bacteria, so not all cases of "cotton fever" could have the same root cause, and it could also theoretically be an immune response to foreign substances (cotton fibres) in the blood stream but I haven't read much evidence to support this theory.

To avoid it - be as sterile as possible, clean your hands well, never reuse cottons (the will be full of bacteria), in fact don't use cottons at all - use a micron filter - and sterile (ideally bacteriostatic) water plus a fresh needle each time. Swab the skin properly with alcohol swabs (30 seconds then let dry) first. This still doesn't guarantee you won't introduce bacteria into your blood stream, but it will minimise the risk as much as possible.

There is no pharmacological reason (as far as I can think) that would mean cotton fever blocks opioids except that you are unwell (temporarily) and you may well not feel the opioid as much, plus you are probably redosing sooner than you usually would to try to make yourself feel better - so the effects of the dose feel reduced.

Thanks for that effie, i too just did some more research and saw that as well i think i might have had that confused as you were saying haha. As far as it blocking opioids, i dont see how it makes sense other than you not feeling well since your body is dealing with the cotton fever. It might be a mental thing as well since youre dealing the sickness from cotton fever.
