Opioids Why do some drugs produce a rush and others don't?

This may sound somewhat naive but I've been wondering this for a while. Why is it that some drugs like heroin, oxymorphone, hydromorphone, etc.. Produce a rush while others like buprenorphine, oxycodone (and from what I've heard, methadone, and hydrocodone)do not when injected? I know it has something to do with how the drug is metabolized but I would like to understand it better.


As an after thought, I know some oxy fans out there will argue that it does give a rush but IMO its pretty undeniable that it's nothing like heroin or opana, more just like an instant onset.

AFAIK it's all about how fast the drugs/metabolites whatever cross the blood brain barrier. The faster they get in there the better the rush. Quite scientific i know but i'm pretty sure that's the general idea, some drugs are better at doing this than others. hopefully someone can elaborate

Oxy produces a rush for me if I don't have a tolerance at the time and I do enough of it. Bupe doesn't produce an instant rush but I do feel a nice buzz from it a 2-3 minutes later and it lasts for like 5-10 mins. Methadone will give you a rush when you shoot it too. Its not like the first ones you listed but you def feel it. Ive never shot hydrocodone though.

I agree about oxy not having a rush, but I certainly got one from buprenorphine the only time I IVd it.

As for the reason why certain drugs produce a rush when IVing, I think that RobotRipping is on the right track (no pun) with the idea of it depending on how fast certain drugs cross the blood/brain barrier after IV.

Yeah I though it had something to do with blood brain barrier too, but then I read that buprenorphine crosses really easily into the bbb so I thought there had to be more to it than that. Buprenorphine does produce a slight rush but it's not instant, and IMO nothing like heroin or opana. And yeah shooting hydrocodone is bad but I've read a few reports on it and it sounds basically like iv codeine

If it really has to do with BBB why don't benzos produce a rush? I've had IV versed in the hospital and there was no rush, just immediate benzo effects.

But then I heard some benzo's do produce a rush, like midazolam, and I'm pretty sure a lot of people liked to inject temazepam when they were in the liquid capsules or something. What confuses me the most is that a drug like oxycodone hits you just as fact when administered iv, as does heroin, dilaudid, or oxymorphone, it just doesn't give anything near the rush.

Im pretty sure when talking about Benzos youre also talking about hitting different receptors opposed to opiates such as GABA which is producing different effects from opiates. My experience with benzos have never been explained as a rush feeling, more of a sedative and "heavy" type of feeling when i peak. With opiates is more of that rush of onset IVing or even snorting.

Yeah no, I know that from experience, I just heard that there are a few bentos like midazolam which give a rush, but yes, it's usually opiates and stims that give a rush when injected, and some other drugs too like ketamine from what I hear
