Yesterday, I asked a 12-year-old the biggest lessons he learned from a recent middle school drug assembly. The answers I received contained the terms “White Lightning,” “Hurricane Charlie” and “Trail Mix.” While valuable for kids to have drug education programs in schools, it becomes a pressing concern when lesser known drugs and/or street names are the primary concepts gleaned from lessons. It’s worse, yet, when kids learn misbegotten ideas on the identity and usage of such drugs, such as the designer compounds commonly referred to as ‘bath salts.’ And here I thought marijuana and alcohol would be the key school drug assembly takeaways for the 11 to 14-year-old demographic.

We need to return to the science of what drugs actually do to our brains and bodies. This extreme brevity and methodology of glossing over key concepts inflicts more damage than it helps — kids enter the assembly knowing perhaps nothing and leave thinking the bath salts under mom’s sink make you act silly and see invisible spiders?

Worse, too, are news reports explaining the effects of ‘bath salts,’ revealing where you can buy the legal high in stores and displaying the products on the show, a horrifying form of well-intentioned press. As one YouTube viewer responded (and received thumbs’ up for), “woah! i gotta try that…thanks CBS”

I second that. It still shocks me when I hear people say "yoy did acid!? Omg ur brain melteddd!!!1" awful lies they tell our kids

Yep. Because D.A.R.E. class told everybody that LSD stays in your spinal fluid and MDMA drains your brain away. Don't worry, you have to do acid seven times before you're legally insane and then you turn into a glass of orange juice.

The real danger of LSD is that dealers have to lace it with strychnine in order for it to bind to the blotter paper.

i agree they lie to you alot and it was worse when i was in school in the D.A.R.E. program..they need to tell people the truth not try to make them scared...and i also thought that things like these in schools didnt deter shit..if you lie to a kid about weed and they try it and find out they are going to think your lying about "x" and coke and blah blah...i didn smoke crack because ive seen plenty of crack heads and what it does..and if you ask kids who grew up in the late 90's they stay aways from meth because they saw it first hand..i need to be in position to make decisions at least i lived it and have common sense

They spit out bullshit studies that say MDMA burns holes in your brain when it was actually meth that was used then they say all of these people die from it when it's really adulterated ECSTASY that killed people not pure MDMA. And the only reason it's adulterated in the first place is because it is illegal. That's what they should teach in school. Word

+1 to the ingrates that have owned big tobacco and booze for the ages.
This is standard warfare, and it's clearly been working, but then came the internet. We're on the cusp of a power grab; a readjustment fase if you will.

I know someone that did acid, they thought they were covered in spiders and tried to cut them all off with a razor blade.

I probably heard that one 5 or 6 times from different people in different cities.

I'm thankful I found erowid before we were given 'drug education' at school.

They should just give everyone the link for erowid when we do drug education in high school. Makes the teachers job easier AND provides students with correct information along with real life experience. Experience and street smarts trumps school textbook information everytime it seems

I have a buddy who told me about how his exposure to drugs was via drug education classes and people telling him not to do them such as family and that his interest was only really piqued when he learned about them; if he had never known what drugs were, his interest might not exist. Of course one can say, well he could've gotten into them in college either way but that's not how things panned out and I feel that that story is worth mentioning.
