Skrillex? What do you guys think?

btw Daft Punk makes french house and electro house. they don't just fit into one subgenre. Though I'd probably classify their newer tracks as electro house.

excuse me ?

Look skrillex obviously has talent or else he wouldn't have been the singer for FFTL and wouldn't be so popular today. The only beef I have with him is that he calls his music DUBSTEP. It is in no way dubstep, but him calling his style dubstep has opened the door for so many new artists to make the same type of music and call it dubstep.

Most kids 20 and under honestly think that dubstep is what he makes... which is more of hard electro house. If people would take the time to listen to digital mystikz, skream, burial, benga type artists they may not even recognize their songs as dubstep! It's sad, but it has already happened and you can't reverse it.

I'm done arguing about Skrillex... props to him, he almost single-handedly changed a genre and has made EDM popular to the masses. And to all the people who want EDM to stay with only them and their circle of friends - fuck off. Dance music is so beautiful, and it should be shared with anyone and everyone. Being selfish and acting like you are better than all of these newcomers is NOT what the scene is about. In fact it is the exact opposite.

Yeah, "dubstep" is no longer dubstep.

I came up in one of the first areas in the US to have actual dubstep parties. What Joe Nice was playing back in 2003 was far different. I used to see him at Sonar, and I was actually at Starscape 2002 which is arguably the first party in the U.S. to have dubstep. It was Zed Bias, Emma Feline and a few others with MC Jus' Red in the arena billed as the "2-step/Garage" area. Dubstep really came out of the bass-heavy b-side remixes on 2-step releases. Irony is that Starscape has now become one of the biggest bastions of Brostep in the United States.

:D

:D

Let's start calling Skrillex and similar artists electrocore and defining it as a merging of half-time syncopated rhythms or 2 + 4 kick/snare patterns with harsher electro style sounds and characterized by "talking bass".

Skrillex is what I imagine some emo kids have on in the background while their fucking eachothers brains out in the back room of a party, bumpin Ket. and rubbing hot oil all over themselves.
Doesnt stop the fact that I like it too, and I like Scene girls also - so it works out on many levels for me ~_^

Mostly, I just hate that Skrillex is what most people associate with dubstep (at least in America) now.

I don't like Skrillex...really at all.
Just like many people have said on here, it's a shame that he is associated with Dubstep. Especially going back to the US and that's what everyone thinks it is.

Just listened to him and his stuff is generic and way overrated. Try some Datsik or Excision.

But Datsik and Excision appear to refuse to write melody lines. :p
65 Days of Static is an awesome band though!

Very overrated.

As far as I can tell, everyone hates him (as this thread indicates). This precludes being overrated (even if he sucks).

It sounds like noise.

I think that this is why I enjoy his production. :p

nah, not true. both have some very deep and emotional songs...its just that since skrillex got huge, thats what the kiddi ravers want, so thats what they write

Holy Hell someone needs to edumacate these fools on bluelight.
Daft Punk is NOT I repeat NOT french house.

If you want to hear what French House sounds like, then listen to
  • Dimitri from Paris
  • DJ Cam
  • Cassius

If you want to hear what Electro House sounds like then listen to
  • Benny Benassi
  • Daft Punk
  • Felix the Housecat
  • Miss Kitten

And once again if you want to hear what Dubstep sounds like, then listen to
  • Skrillex

Skrillex is not dubstep, it's hard electro, like Knife Party and whatever else the fuck hipsters listen to these days

EDIT: If you mention BPM this thread will go downhill.

Skrillex is not dubstep, it's hard electro, like Knife Party and whatever else the fuck hipsters listen to these days

You keep mentioning hard electro even though he plays nothing remotely close to electro.
That would be like labeling Michael Jackson as Gangsta Rap.

Here is a little science project for you kids at home:
Listen to Baby Anne, Skrillex, and Dynamix II all back to back on the same day.
Contemplate for a moment, and then report back here on which artist sounds completely different than the other two.

There are different styles of electro, thats like saying go listen to some progressive and then listen to some Deadmau as if they would be anything alike. It isnt spot on hard electro I know that, it's got ALOT more bass, but the synth etc is not dubstep, and is closer to electro. Just about the only thing it has in common is bass. To be honest it's own genre, and it's spawned it's own set of cringe worthy fans.

no, skrillex does produce dubstep. but he also produces electro house.

electro house:

rock n roll

dubstep:

scary monsters and nice sprites

he didn't invent either. his dubstep sounds like your typical wobble dubstep. his electro house sounds like a lot of electro house that is being produced these days.
