NEMD Grateful Dead Appreciation Thread

i should add too that the bass is an instrument that has never really moved me, nor the drums

i'm all about guitars and keys

and there's the rub.

i'm a bass man. it's really what drew me into the whole jam thing. bassist like phil, dave schools, mike gordon and allen woody are what, in my opinion, set their respective bands apart from a lot of other bands.

your typical pop bassist really doesn't do much but keep a rythym, where as those guys dominate your face and get super fucking creative.

to each their own my friend.

my favorite bass players are two guys named john

kahn and entwistle

phil is far more creative, but kahn is just in-your-face on da dance floor type player, love that bass line in mystery train, midnight moonlight, 2nd that emotion, and tore up over you

It might be better that way. Like, if you ignore it, maybe it will go away. It looks like a minor abomination as far as I can tell. That video was pretty heinous, and I saw on the website they have like a $400 pre-order offer or something like that. If anyone is going to drop $400 to play that game they need to think long and hard about how they ended up the way they did. I think the money would be better spent funding time machine research so you can go back and see the actual shows (which is pretty much all I would want out of a time machine, why was I not born 40 years sooner?!?).

i'm not a video game guy, but i am a xmas guy.

^ That made me laugh ChickenScratch.

Looks like I'll be seeing DSO in february at least once. Thoughts on them?

I've not seen them before. I probably should have caught them at All Good this past summer but I was so damn tired on sunday afternoon.

i haven't seen them in probably 10 years. but from what i've heard, they're pretty badass these days.

ask chinarider, he's totes gay for them.

apparently people like go on tour with them, which i find comical.

^ I was surprised when I heard people still toured with further. It just seems sketchy. I had a buddy go up to the IN show, couldn't get a ticket but hung out with various people on tour. He said two DEFINITE undercovers came up to him asking him where shakedown street was and he just told them he didn't know. He said he told the first one this and then a similar looking one came up maybe 15 mins later.

They're playing a venue I haven't been to before and I haven't seen them either so I'm excited though it would be pretty tight to meet people on tour. I love meeting people that toured with the grateful dead, I just find the whole subject and lifestyle really interesting though I've found that I don't think I want to try it because it just seems really dangerous as far as getting in trouble goes.

I heard from my people that the IN show was not very good at all. I don't know if i would want to pay to see Furthur, with so many great bands touring nowadays. I hear there are alot of people working those shows, one thing I don't enjoy is folk vending to me. Seems with those big shows it is really a problem. I loved and still love The Grateful Dead.

You don't enjoy people vending to you? I don't really get that statement. Nobody is forcing you to buy anything.

Logic, tour was fun when I was younger. There really arent many places in the US I haven't been and whenever I go to a show, no matter where it is, I typically run into people I know. I'm not interested in ever doing it again, but I'm happy I did it. You just gotta be smart. I did get arrested once I LA, but we were lost and got pulled over cuz we looked sketchy. But with well over 250 various shows under my belt, one time ain't so bad. Hit the road and do a week some time. You'll have a blast. Just don't do it with further, do it with somebody that still rips, like phish.

Out of curiosity, what are your complaints about further? I don't agree or disagree, I just wonder seeing as you seem like a fairly experienced traveller.

I don't really have any, as I havent even seen the current line up. I've heard some, and think its good, but not worth traveling for. Fact is, they're old, a bit washed up and it's pretty nostalgic and not downright nasty anymore. I suppose you could say the same for phish, but at least it's the original line up and the music never fails to deliver. After seeing cheese a few weeks ago, theyre really the only band I could see myself doing a run of shows with.

if you actually like the music of the grateful dead

dso is a fucking blast

the lead guitar player, jeff mattson has the ability to take over a show, unlike ex-dso lead player and current lead for furthur john kadlecek

i see them every time they play within 150 miles, always worth it, even when the band has an off night

going to see them back to back tomorrow in philly and 12/30 in NJ, can't wait, both shows they are doing a set of acoustic and 2 electric sets

it will be

and i have the burden of driving, so i'll be sober and in the company of just strangers

i'm staying at my brother's house tomorrow night, i didn't even ask him to come with me, i don't want him to

hopefully i can find some E but city shows don't really have a lot scene

i've been to montclaire, nj once for a show(dso played the famous 9/18/87 msg show, weak setlist imo but was worth it for the dew), and despite never hearing of it, the city is a traffic and congestion factory

i've seen just four morning dews between 50+ shows of dso, ratdog, furthur and other GD cover bands

bullshit i say

I've seen panic play morning dew one less time than youve seen dead reincarnations play it. Sad times, but with 6 sets of music in your future, I'm sure you'll get one.
