Gabapentin and alprazolam DO interact, and are rather similar substances in terms of what they do.
In medical practice, such a combination is not rare, however, the dose of each medication must be adjusted accordingly if they are taken together.
Ask a learned doctor-sage about doses of each when taken together; before that happens, be careful when mixing the two. You will feel much more tired and sleepy than if you take just one of the two medications. The degree of the side effects depends on the dosage of each medication as well as your tolerance to the sedative effect of alprazolam and gabapentin.
Valerian root is probably not a great idea - why add it to the mix? It too is, in many ways, similar to both alprazolam and gabapentin. The two should be enough to counter whatever it is that bothers you. Adding Valerian root to the mix most likely will not kill you, however, it seems pointless, and could only lead to more side effects similar to the ones listed above and then some.
Perhaps you can list specific dosages and combinations you are wondering about, and you would get more feedback? Otherwise, the quick answer to 'is it safe to mix gabapentin and xanax and/or valerian root' is NO. All are sedating and much more sedating when taken with another member of the group. Long answer - hypothetically it is safe, depending on what dose of each substance you take and what you take it for, etc.
