A white powdery substance believed to be narcotics was discovered with the body of a 42-year old megachurch Florida pastor who was discovered dead in a Times Square hotel room, a law enforcement official said Monday.

The cause of death for the Rev. Zachery Tims, Jr., who led an 8,000-member ministry in Orlando, is still pending.

Tims’s body was discovered Friday afternoon when a worker trying to check the minibar in his room at the W Hotel, and found the room’s door latched from the inside. A maintenance worker opened the door and found Tims lying on his back between the bedroom and living room area. According to a law enforcement official, police found a glassine envelope with a white powerdery substance inside the right pocket of his shorts.

The substance was being tested, according to a law enforcement official.

Another law enforcement official familiar with the case said, “what that white powdery substance is and whether it played a role in Mr. Tims’ death is still to be determined.”

Police found no signs of trauma to his body. At this point criminality is not suspected, officials said. Detectives spoke with his family members and it appears Tims died in possession of his jewelry and other belongings.

Tims was in town for a meeting and was supposed to leave for Texas last Thursday, according to a law enforcement official with knowledge of the matter.

Tims was a young drug addict in Maryland when he was “miraculously saved” according to his website and a memoir published in 2006. After discovering Christianity, he earned degrees in accounting and theology and worked at a ministry in Baltimore. In 1996, he and his wife Riva moved to Orlando, where they founded the New Destiny Christian Center.

^ Well given the location, and that it was in a glassine envelope, I would assume heroin.

^^ There is no assumption about it- it was heroin(unless he got ripped off but that's unlikely based on his location and the fact that one bag was strong enough to off the guy. Probably went up to NY on a diesel fueled vacation but underestimated the NY dope). They just aren't saying it outright because of the guys job im assuming, understandable but still rather unfair that being a pastor somehow makes him high and mighty enough to not be branded a junkie like every other OD victim reported on. Oh well, still sucks for the guys family, im sure this will be a shock to them considering..

Just goes to show, along with raping kids, pastors need to get high sometimes too. And this guy prolly had to self-administer every time he felt the urge to masturbate (if no little boys were around). Im not making fun of him really, I just dont like religion, and I hate the unnatural things it makes people attempt to take on, only to become insanely corrupted.

At least he didnt have time to get strung out and pawn off all his jewelry and shit. The glass is half full in my eyes.

Everyone should read the full article in the link if they haven't yet. This guy was an ex-gang banger from Baltimore that became a millionaire pastor. His wife had divorced him a few years back because he had been cheating on her with a stripper.

Your view of the story will change pretty quickly after reading that.

The following article was originally published in Charisma magazine in September 2006.

Marijuana and cocaine defined his young life.

He started by selling to addicts in a high crime area. Before long he sold drugs to classmates at the Roman Catholic high school he attended, to women willing to barter their bodies for crack cocaine, and later to supervisors wanting to get high on the job. Trafficking turned him on—until, like some of his customers, he got addicted to his product.

When a drug-dealing partner broke into his mother's house and stole his stash of money and dope, he went into a blind rage and hunted him down.

"I called him on the phone and asked him to meet me on the street. … I came with my gun and I figured I would scare him," says Tims, describing the events that occurred. But the demons that would eventually chase him into the arms of a loving God were driving him that day to kill: "I heard in my head: 'Kill him, shoot him! Kill him, shoot him!'

"So I whipped out the gun and fired every bullet—five or six. It was a .38 snub-nosed revolver … stolen from a state trooper," he recalls.

His 20-year-old partner fled with a bullet in his foot, and Tims became the new drug don of Baltimore's northeast side.
so he's an ex-crack dealer who shot and tried to kill a person/
what a role model.
