WINFIELD, W.Va. -- Putnam County Schools officials have tested 497 students so far this year for drugs or alcohol. They won't say how many positives they received. "I'm not able to share that information. Technically, the only person who is supposed to know is me," said Danielle Gillespie, drug prevention and education coordinator for Putnam County Schools. The controversial new drug testing policy requires all students in grades six through 12 who play sports, drive to school or participate in extracurricular activities to give consent for the random saliva screenings.

"Did they test positive because of a pitiful choice they made Friday night with their buddies? Or, do they have a problem?"

One mom came in the high school when I was there testing and said 'I want to thank you guys for what you're doing -- it's helped us as parents do our jobs.'"

That's really sad... I guess the school had absolutely nothing else to do with $40,000?

i went to a private catholic high school and they began drug testing ALL students my senior year. each student would be tested twice throughout the year (hair tests).

you had to pay for the test which was added to the tuition. thing is im sure the school didnt send in ALL of the tests, just the tests for which students they were suspicious of, so they pocketed a shit load of money.

i actually dont think this is a bad idea. i know alot of you will be up in arms bout the subject but imo its a good way to stop a lot of students from using drugs.

Don't care what anyone says, this is a breach of human rights, forcing people to undergo drug tests without any prior evidence to use is wrong, no matter what age they are. Basically people under the age of 18??? (I'm from uk don't know what 12th grade is), do not have any rights...

yes this is bullshit they were trying to implement this in my class before i graduated and it just wasnt gonna happin...i think this is just a little department of education experiment seeing what happins and what the results are...but here in the U.S. are rights are dissapearing daily

If I were going to the school in question (thankfully I graduated this past year and I highly doubt any college would pull this sort of bs) I would just figure out a way around it.

When my grandmother got me on juvenile probation for arguing with her as a teen, I simply looked for substances that I could use that I wouldn't fail a standard 5 panel for, basically because I was tested, I developed an interest in psychedelics. I soon learned that they were much more useful and important than the reason I had initially be interested in and the rest is history :)

when they started testing i began experimenting with mushrooms every weekend.

lol at my HS no one ever got drug tested and the school cop/admins were completely ignorant of student drug use/didn't seem to know that certain people used drugs even though it was rather obvious...
and a saliva test only is good for a few hours for most drugs i thought, eg. 24 hours after using you'll pass one.
a saliva test only is good for determining if someone is actually high it seems to me....

I actually had a friend back home smoke on the way to a drug test for a certain grocery store chain. He pulled into the parking spot, gargled thoroughly with listerine, walked in and passed.

I'm not sure if he is still working there but last time I saw him was on his break outside the place.

So in other words students who take drugs will stop playing sports or participating in anything in school. What a great way to boost school spirit :| . We have enough of a obesity epidemic already shouldn't they be trying to get people into sports not keep them out of it? Fucking morons! :!

It's reason's like this petty little bullshit like this that makes so many people drop out of school. If i had a dime for every kid i saw drop out not because they didn't like learning but because of petty bullshit that the school get's on with i would be a very rich man indeedy. Also how is it the school's business what you do when your outside of school? What's next putting a camera in the kids room so they can make sure they are not giving into vice 8)

Is it just me or are kids becoming more sheepish these days? I know if they had tried to drug test us in school either everyone would walk out as a protest or they would just tell the teachers to shove it up their arse. Either works if enough people do it :\

Kind of makes me think about how schools are looking at their students Facebooks and suspending them if they see the student doing something illegal in a pic or some bullshit like that. How much further must our schools delve into our children's lives outside of the school?

Edit:
My wifes little sister got issued a small macbook thing from her school and it has a camera on it. Teachers at will can turn on anyone of these cameras no matter where the laptop is. Thats creepy as hell. I have read about this being used elsewhere in other schools as well. Whats the need for that? Really? Her school warned them about it but said they would only do it during "school hours." Wonder how much truth there is to that?

I have never heard of a drug test at school here in Australia.
Even when my mother took me to a doctor to get a drug test, he still asked me before hand, because I had to agree, as I was 16.
