But wait, before you discard ALL dubstep, why not check out what some of the Brixton Jamaican-style roots-ish dubstep is like.

Aba Shanti, Channel One, Iration Steppaz, Mungo's Hi-Fi, to name a few off the top of my head, loads of people are still making dub music. You might not like dubstep, but it isn't that "dub has become", it's a different genre.

and pick any genre of music that you like, what percentage of that genre do you really love? 1 track in a hundred/thousand/million??

theres no point writing off any genre as "good" or "bad", its too simplistic and therefore detrimental to potential future aural pleasure.
 
This is precisely my point. Personally, I was into House (all types), Breaks and Techno in the early 90ies. I have heard many things since then and I have to admit, I like the so called "shit" dubstep (Skrillex, Nero etc). There will always jaded music snobs out there ^^. and music will still evolve.

never stop liking something just because it becomes popular.
it doesn't make you cool,
it makes you fickle, shallow and negative.
wouldn't the world be a better place if most people listened to good music??

"i knew them before they were popular" or

The majority of the time when something becomes popular it goes to shit as well. I was sheavy into Indie music and then it turned into this neich for the market to suck shit our of. and then everything started to sound the same. all the people adopted teh rythems andd voices of the ones who got whored by the industry. But I still like dubstep, you just have to know the fucking difference between dubstep and brostep.
 
Im afraid to give it a chance, given what ive heard and seen so far, especially with what they did with DnB. I mean, anybody with abelton and a midi.

Now otherwise, if you actually have a human playing bass its a different story, IMO, but the kids these days would probably be too fucked up to appreciate it. What happened to intelligent music? I mean, I guess you could call Tom Jenkingsons (aka squarepusher) newest album, Shoeboleader 1 (?) a "step" in the right direction. and do not pardon that pun!

@DJ303 thank you for what must have been a time consuming post. I found it to be very thoughtful and illuminating.
 
Too much hating on mainstream imo. Music is music. Quality is subjective and a lot of the time genre distinctions are hard to pinpoint.

I think of dub-step as those screaming heavy bass and sounds that has several "drops" throughout it and is hopefully boosted by some lyrics as well. I don't usually try to be too specific when referencing genres in order not to incite too much debate. :P

The problem with dubstep is not the actual genre itself, but how the music gets over saturated by the rave promoters to the public while completely ignoring every other musical styles of the scene.
It's getting to a point where it seems like no one can figure out what else to play.
A reoccurring trend I've noticed lately are different DJ's playing the same tracks from the other DJ's that played earlier that night at the same party.

I'll give you an example:
When I go out to parties to hear DJ Dan, I want to hear what DJ Dan has been known for in the past.
When Dan plays several Dubstep tracks included in his sets, then I start to realize that either there is a shortage of music interest in other styles of music, or people completely stopped making anything other than dubstep produced auto-tuned tracks and now DJ's have no idea what else to play. So instead of going back to their roots, they just play what's currently "hip" or "trendy".
