I just started vyvanse yesterday...today is my second day taking it. i feel like a brand new me! i love it, its exactly what i needed. anyway, should i expect weight loss with this medication? and how much is the average people lose on it? it makes me not hungry and gives me the ability to be productive and active throughout the day which is a huge change for me. I love this medication just curious about the weight loss aspect seeing as ive been trying to lose weight for a while now

The effects, "brand new me" will diminish with increased tolerance; I'm sorry to say. Yes, you will likely lose weight.

booo =[ well im only on a low dose of 30mgs so i have room to increase...but i want to slowly increase...hopefully it helps me get into a new healthier routine to help keep the "brand new me" which im also on prozac 40mgs and abilify 10mgs so that helps me feel better as well. If i weight 150 how much weight on average do you think i can lose from the medication?

i hate to eat on d-amp, but afterwards or at night (i usually take amps in the morning) i eat 10x as much. however, i do smoke weed weed alot so maybe that's why?? loool

kind of counter-productive if you ask me...

im not strictly using them for weight loss its just a plus side effect. plus it decreases my appetite so i dont binge and i exercise almost daily especially since being on this i have the energy and am not lazy anymore. plus i plan on being on ADHD medication for basically most of my life seeing as im going to be going to medical school and working in the medical field in the next few years to come so ill need to be able to focus. =] this is helping me to live a healthier, focued lifestyle

This "honeymoon phase" passes. Amphetamines eventually will lose the magic.

Weight loss is a common side effect of dextroamphetamine (the drug vyvanse is metabolized into) and many of the amphetamine class drugs. However, as NeighboorhoodThreat mentioned it will be counter-productive in the long-term sense.

Don't go relying on it too much, it's a slippery slope once you start using it as a "tool" so to speak.

The line between "this helps me out" and "I NEED THIS" is unfortunately thin, blurry, and far too easy to cross.

Yea the weight loss was always a negative aspect for me b/c I'm always trying to gain weight...it just makes food so unappealing and when you do decide to eat, I feel that it's harder to chew and swallow.

I'm guessing you're just starting to use vyvanse...like others said, the "healthier, focused lifestyle" effect does wear off rather quickly and then you just take it as a routine thing cause you can't function without it.

Imo, prescription stims are much better if you use them only when you actually need to focus on something...you don't want to deal with Vyvanse tolerance/dependency while going through med school.

You're going to lose weight regardless while you're on it, but you have to make yourself eat. (Ab)using its properties as an appetite suppressant to simply not eat is bad. It might be hard at first, but you can use the added focus to help incorporate healthier habits into your lifestyle. Eat healthier foods. Take the 10 minutes or whatever it takes and enjoy them. Eat mindfully. Also, look into getting some CoQ10, maybe some fish oil, multivitamins. Small amounts of an NMDA antagonist such as DXM (like, 30-60 mg) can help prevent tolerance. DXM has the disadvantage of having a relatively short half-life, so maybe look into some memantine if you can figure out how to procure that.

Yes, expect weight loss (potentially significant) with the use of amphetamines like Vyvanse. Not the greatest idea all the time, but I don't know your circumstances. I can tell you that the "honeymoon" phase as someone put it will end, and while your appetite will remain low, you will not feel as good.

PS - Just throwing this out there, anti-psychotics like Abilify can interfere with the effects of amphetamines, and they aren't really good for you either.

^Good point about the Abilify. Are you getting all these psych drugs prescribed by the same doctor?
yes I am getting them prescribed by the same doctor....how do they interfere with the ampthetamines? and why aren't they good for you? I might cut that out or talk to the doctor about cutting it out then...

DXM prevents tolerance of amphetamines? How so and why? Thats great seeing i love DXM but no longer even have the urge to do it since this medication. And what exactly is memantine and how would I come across it?

this is all really helpful information for me, so thank you guys=] I learn a lot from this forum.:)

oh wow thats interesting. thank you for that link. I drank a table spoon or so of promethazine DM syrup last night and i feel like i do feel the effects of the vyvanse more so, but it could just be in my mind, thats the only thing i had with dxm in not sure if that was the right thing to use.

But with the abilify, should i stop taking that today? how does it exactly interfere with the vyvanse? and why is it bad for people?

Okay, the Abilify is an anti-psychotic, a newer one, but one nonetheless. In my opinion some anti-psychotics are good for a few things, migraines, extreme agitation, acute psychosis, stim comedown, extreme nausea, probably a few others. In my opinion not much more. They aren't drugs that are healthy to use on a daily basis because they can end up causing irreversible side effects, most notoriously the fabulous tardive dyskenisia. Would you like to smack your lips uncontrollably for the rest of your life or have your hand shake uncontrollably, or have any other involuntary muscle spasms permanently? I wouldn't. Now, that is not the only reason you shouldn't take them, but in my opinion they just worsen psychiatric conditions by really throwing your brain chemistry for a loop, anti-psychotics often zombify you. You become very flat, very tranquilized, and unmotivated. It isn't pleasant. They can cause restlessness and dysphoria, and are just not good drugs to take on a daily basis. Anti-psychotics can also lower the seizure threshold.

Now, they can interfere with the amphetamines because they aim to lower levels of dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine, and amps boost those through the roof. Abilify is a little different in that it increases some levels of these neurochemicals, but reduces them at the same time, in effect keeping them stable. I wouldn't throw away all of your Abilify by any means, it can be very appropriate, but not every day. The other day I had to go to a funeral of a friend's family member, and I knew it wasn't going to be a good day, it was going to be anxious, and uncomfortable, and sad. So, I took 100 mg Seroquel (from my little just in case stash) along with my benzos, which I take every day. I am not sure even that was a good use for the Seroquel, but I sure was downed out, not in a good way really, just downed out. So if you ever find yourself in a situation where you just can't handle yourself with anxiety or psychosis or stimulant comedown, taking Abilify would be fine, just not often. You could even force a stimulant comedown with an anti-psychotic, though Abilify isn't ideal it would work, it would also work to kill a trip, just so you know. I hope this helps.

I shake constantly ive had a tremor for the longest time now...it gets worse with stimulants, and my mom always blamed them on the stims, but i guess the tremor is probably from anti-psychotics. That makes a lot more sense...and for some reason when i take suboxone i do the lipsmacking thing kinda except my tongue kind of just moves somewhat uncontrollably like if im not moving it will start doing almost like a wave, could that be from the anti-psychotics? or is that just a weird coincidence?

and another question...i took my abilify today for the first time while taking the stim, and i hadnt noticed a crash before but now for some reason i think i may be feeling the comedown, emotional, apathetic, bored, irritated, tired but cant sleep. is that a come down? and is it cause ive taken the abilify? If so i probably wont take it anymore.

I would avoid taking the abilify with the stims. Alex000 has an excellently descriptive post on exactly why they shouldn't be taken together. Some people use them to "abort" the effects of the amphetamine so to speak, so if anything you should take it much later.

Considering the fact that you do have a tremor, experience lipsmacking, and perhaps the most telling of all, the "tongue wave" I would say that yes you are experiencing side effects from the Abilify. Combining the two resulting in your description of apathy, boredome, irratibility and fatigue basically indicates your dopamine levels were really fucked up. You see, Abilify is what they call a "third-generation" anti-psychotic, and it possesses some anti-depressant action in that it also increases levels of dopamine in the synapse, and at the same time decreases them. Taking such a drug on top of an amphetamine will make you feel uncomfortable, yes. If you take the Abilify toward the end of a comedown of just amphetamines it will likely just quicken the comedown, and flatten you out, which COULD help. Abilify is a "screwy" drug. If I had to use an anti-psychotic I'd use one of the oldest and most notorious, Thorazine, which can cause very serious side effects more easily, but at least it does what I know it will do, and isn't so "screwy".

Excellent responses and answers from everyone here.

Gonna go ahead and close this now, if anyone has anything they would like to add feel free to PM me.
