LEUVEN – Two chemistry students at the Catholic University of Leuven have been permanently expelled because they had made exotic and experimental drugs in a university lab. The two students tried out their creations themselves and also gave some away to a few friends. ‘But selling any has never been our intention.’
From our editors
‘We have been incredibly stupid. We should have realized we were doing something that wasn’t ok. But at that time, we just didn’t ask ourselves such questions. We were simply curious’, says W.D., one of the two students. He doesn’t want to mitigate anyting. But he does want to stress that it was never their intention to bring these drugs to the market. ‘Selling them would have been immoral. But I thought it an acceptable risk to take these drugs myself.’
When the university board was informed of the experiments by the two chemistry students by the judicial authority, the students could not count on any understanding there. A sanctional procedure was started immediately, resulting in the most severe punishment: permanent expulsion. In September, both students had to leave the KU Leuven. They are never welcome again.
‘The two students involved have been heard by us and they have admitted they had been making hallucinogenic and stimulating substances’, says vice-rector Tine Baelmans. ‘It concerns exotic, toxicological materials, which are not without danger. To gauge their effects, they have experimented with them themselves. And they have also given them to a few friends. We take this extremely serious. The students involved have abused the scientific infrastructure of the university. And they have also abused their scientific knowledge. We have to be able to count on the deontology of our researchers. This trust has been severely disappointed here.’
Betrayed to the authorities
It’s not clear how long the two students have used the university labs for their experiments. It is certain however that the university itself was unaware. The quantities used by the students were so small that nobody noticed any materials missing. ‘Social control also failed,’ says Baelmans. ‘Partly because the two worked in the labs during the night. Naturally, there is less control then.’
The drug experiments came to light thanks to an acquaintance of one of the students, who had already reported everything to the judicial authorities in the spring of 2010. Shortly thereafter, search warrants were issued for W.D. and also for an older doctoral student D.H. D.H. had been working on his doctoral thesis for 5 years already, and has to leave the university without his degree.
Judicial authorities in Leuven were unreachable for comments yesterday evening, but according to our information both students confessed immediately. Afterward, it took over a year before the university was informed. The university sanction followed in September. The court has not yet concluded its investigations.
‘I deny that I would have confessed to making these substances myself. Neither have I admitted that towards the university’, says W.D. ‘I am not prosecuted for anything of that sort. I do admit I was there during the nightly weighing sessions in the lab where we divided the final products into doses for use, and that I have ingested these substances. But I am also reproached for giving advice and stimulating production. But it really isn’t true that I have encouraged others.’
