Codeine and CWE Megathread - The long awaited!

About a year ago we were talking about them daily in the Codeine thread. I remember when my doctor told me about it as I stocked up :) I use them for sleep very occasionally.

Whats the point? They dont really strike me as meds that could be abused. Well Im sure they are I guess.... more misuse rather than abuse. But the repercussions arent really anything worse than feeling lethargic and overly tired etc.

Gotta love the Aus nanny state sometimes.

I agree, they may be misused and some people do overuse them but they aren't recreational and the side effects are enough to stop most people from thinking it's a good idea to take them every day.

Has anyone heard any more about OTC Promethazine and Doxylamine succinate being made prescription only? My doctor told me that it was coming soon but that was a few months ago.

Dont worry too much if it does happen, as long as they dont make [you know what] prescription only :S

Mr Blonde what was that you mentioned about panadeine extra type preparations (ie. 15/500) coming onto the market in larger (than 24) boxes?

Pretty sure that was what you said...

That law doesnt seem to be super strict anyway as there are some online pharmacies that I occasionally order some stuff from that allow me to order 3x boxes of pan extra 12 packs. Thats 140mg over the codeine limit AFAIK (assuming the limit is supposed to be 400mg... the largest size generic panadeine that is available). In addition I have also ordered 24 pan extra + 30 nurofen plus from an online pharmacy or two. Obviously not gonna mention any sites but its funny how there are some that wont even sell you any codeine product whatsoever unless they have a script from you on file. ie. you have to send them a script. While there are others that just dont give a fuck (still talking online pharmacies here).

^ Yeah there is apparently going to be a generic of Panadeine Extra available in a 40 pack... the way they got around the legislation was by measuring the codeine content not as the salt, or at least that's what the marketing information I received said. That must have been a couple of weeks ago I saw that, but haven't seen it in stores yet. Has anyone else?

/me facepalms, rescheduling of codeine to make it harder to get would suck... doubt it will happen tbh

Just because it hasnt happened doesnt mean it wont. IMO it can happen its just a matter of time, same like with Pseudo. Computers tracking u isnt fun.

I thought the administrative load that would create is a major reason it didnt/hasnt happened? That would be funny on a sat morning... I try to avoid going to the chemist on the days I know everyone will be buying codeine products. but occasionally Ill go on a weekend and I swear to god if the customer in front and behind me isnt buying some sort of nurofen plus (or similar alt brand) product it is a rarity. They must prep any new sales assistant chicks... "Ok Melissa, its Saturday morning so youll find lots of people will be buying these pain killers here.... just remember you need to come and get me before you sell them these"...

lol. Its fucking embarrassing. Generally why I avoid weekends. Although sometimes it can be a good time to go because they have a different pharmacist to the regular weekday one.

Hmm I never thought about that, referring to the weekend dosing thing. I never go on the same days like u said there are always different people working on different days and less likely to remember u that way. It would be a massive inconvenience if they did re schedule it, I guess we will have to wait n see, til then enjoy it while u can i say:)

I hate all the exscuses these pharmacists come up with for not selling me codeine. I"m now limited to 1 codeine containing product per 3O days due my admission that in part, my use of panadeine is for an injury i've had for 1.5 years.... which is actually true. So guy says to me "i'm sorry but we can only give you this for temporary pain, not to treat a long term or permanent injury". so BAM effectively banned from the largest chain of chemists in the state/country?. I tried other stores in same chain in my area, and it becomes obvious they're reading the long winded note on the computer that CUNT pharmacist put there. I then get a 'I"m sorry sir, we have a policy of only selling 1 codeine containing product per 3O days and you've already made a purchase' . Policy what fucking policy???? hate liars.

Note to self, don't give these pricks ammunition to shoot you with.

As far as making sedating antihistamines prescription only, I can see 2 possible reasons why. Kids used to take 10 packs of AVIL travel sickness antihistamines to 'get high' . The same OD delirium is likely possible from other travel sickness and sleeping antihistamines. Other thought was that it's use as a sleeping tablet is quite dangerous due to next day 'hangover' sedation. I can't function at all until i struggle out of bed and drink 2 coffee's. I don't watch the news, but wonder if there may have been traffic accidents related to restavit and the like. I assume driving a car next morning with restavit in the system is more dangerous than stilnox or temazepam

Bobbydarren, do pharmacists ask for your name when you buy codeine where you are? How do they know that you've already bought a codeine product in any given month?

Well most of the time when I walk in to this chain of chemists and ask for panadeine they ask me for ID immediately , sometimes they try and be sneaky and ask for my details, THEN ASK FOR ID!! , in an attempt to catch me lying to them. Maybe i'll try the no-id approach, not like i'll be worse off.

^ Nor in SA. I've never actually been asked for ID, there are two pharmacies that occasionally ask for my details if I've been going there too often, but they don't check them against my ID so I could just lie (though I don't bother).

^ You have to give your details here in QLD, but a lot of places will just get you to write them down instead of asking for ID. If they are really suspicious of your codeine purchasing then they will ask for ID.

It seems so pointless when they write down your details. Surely it's useless, because the people who give them the right details are most likely not the ones they need to worry about.

Some places in Vic ask for ID, but I've also gone in and said I've forgotten my ID and they just ask me to write down my details instead. Then it's just a matter of responding to your fake name when they call you to say your order is ready ;)

Just tell them u have no ID and if they arnt willing to give it to u then say "Im going elsewhere, plenty of chemists around, ur loss not mine" and walk out. Ive done it before. Where I live there are at least 30 chemists within 10 min drive. I find the smaller chemists are the way to go about it. I usually get 2-3 packs at a time from them. U scratch my back and Ill scratch urs kinda thing:)

^ That's odd that the chain has all their computers connected across the stores; they certainly don't do that in Brisbane.

Maybe you have to be come a perceived drug addict to get on the APB list that they share with all their stores. I"m talking about a chain of very large very cheap pharmacies. I never used to have a problem getting panadeine, I then got restricted at 1 store, and i'm also restricted at both the other stores I visit. Admittedly that's only 3 stores that I know are linked up, but they are the only 3 I visit [local to me] so cant' comment on whether it's every store... just probably it is.

I only would go there because they are cheap, but I have other options so FU CW.

^ I think I know the chain you are talking about. I personally haven't had trouble with them, but a friend has and he has no problems either going to another of their stores (among others) or simply waiting a little while with that place and then going back with a different name.

I have heard of smaller towns where pharmacies owned by the same person have their dispensing software linked up like that though.
