⭐️ Social ⭐️ Get to know your neighbo(u)rs from across the pond

Send your wife over here, I'll take care of it.

Am I imagining things, or are Americans both more prudish and more sexually depraved than ya'll Brits?

I met my wife in the US. The first thing she said to me is "you're not American" to which I replied "neither are you." This was a reflection of how uninteresting we both found the social aspect of life in the US. Together, we soon put that right =D
Not complaining. Had a great life in the good ol USofEh? Met some great people too.

Well, judging by your porn (ahem, as far as I've been told) you are all obsessed with anal sex...

British people invented dogging though, and 'seagulling'. All very unpleasant.

...I am prudish...

How does the "social aspect of life" differ in the UK? Keep in mind that I'm not being defensive as I find american life quite boring as well. Just curious if there was anything in particular that you missed while here.

Dogging would be a great way to become a registered sex offender here. Although I'm sure that there is a US equivalent I'm not sure what it'd be called as dogging is perhaps a little too similar to doggy style sex.

I found the relationships with american friends a little shallow at first. Everything seemed a little superficial. It wasn't always like that, more of a general impression. I got the impression that most american friends would be horrified if I suggested going out on a mid week bender, so this remained very much an Anglo only event. Having sampled life in a few cities I would say it was more about where I was. I experienced life in DC, Baltimore, Philly, NY, Chi and they all had quite different characters. As a country I grew to love it more with time and the more I learnt the easier it became. My kids are US citizens, so I like to keep in touch with life over the pond.

City life is completely different than country life though. I live close to NYC, and I agree that most people seem shallow. I went to school in a rural area of upstate NY, and the lifestyle is completely different. They are a lot more hospitable in 'the country' and I was always taken care of there. I actually lied to some people there about where I was from because they automatically think that you are an asshole if you are from by the city. I had to fake my accent too haha. Once I told them the truth a lot of them were actually surprised.

ya'll come down south ya hear for some southern hospitality.

Unless you are black...? Or is that an outdated stereotype? I'm interested to hear.

There are parts of the UK (southwest, parts of the north) where racism is still pretty prevalent. The first time I was in Cornwall I was shocked by all the Golliwog memorabilia they had everywhere...

i worked in louisiana for a while. you didn't have to scratch the surface very hard to figure out that racism is still very much an issue there. people are just a bit more careful about what they say to who.

one thing i noticed there - and i do hope i'm not being racist here myself - was that i could predict with 99% accuracy what colour an approaching driver was, using this formula:

pickup truck or 4x4 - white
any type of sedan/saloon - black

Yeah, I live in Devon and golliwogs are standard tourist shop fare, right next to the rock and the fudge. Casual racism is really quite prevalent, I'm sorry to say even in my own family :\

I know that's true. I have visited some parts of Georgia and Oklahoma that were insanely hospitable.

As far as racism goes I think you could pretty much find that anywhere if you're looking for it.

they still burn witches in Devon, so that isn't surprising.

What do you do in Scotland? Grant them asylum seeker status and give them a council house? That's why this country's going to the dogs. Bring back hanging, I say.

hanging (or burning) isn't the answer to everything, you know. ;)

No, national service and closed borders have a part to play, too.

national service? what would you know about it? i bet you've never oiled up your weapon in a roomful of young boys while being shouted at by an old man, have you? oh wait

I've discharged my load plenty of times, I'll have you know.

LOL. :D it's getting a bit Top Gun in here.

ok, time for a question:

americans : is it true that most americans don't realise that Hugh Laurie, the star of "House", is actually English?

^ I saw him on either a talk show or an awards show a few years ago and was quite shocked. I think we all know by now though.

Dominic West, who played Detective McNulty in The Wire is another English actor that had many an American fooled.
