The former President of Mexico has told the BBC that he holds the United States responsible for the violence in his country.

Vicente Fox, who was president from 2001 to 2006, said consumption of drugs in the US was at the root of the problem and he called for the legalisation of drugs in America.

Forty-five thousand people are estimated to have been killed since Mexico's current President Felipe Calderon launched his war on the drug cartels five years ago.

Speaking to the BBC's Katty Kay, Mr Fox said it was time to withdraw the military and to seek an alternative strategy.

Pretty sure he got his facts wrong... He said, in that Gallup poll that just recently got released, that "50% of Americans want all drugs legalized", did he fail to realize that it was just for marijuana?

That's likely what happened. I have to say that I absolutely hate that Marijuana gets put into a category all to itself when speaking of legalization though. I feel if you're for the legalization of any drug, how can you truly make the case to keep another illegal. It's all or nothing in my mind. /rant

I think they should all be legalized but society in general wont realize that for awhile (if ever) and legalizing pot is a GREAT place to START. But unfortunatly its only a start and way more needs to be if were ever to end this "war" on drugs. and actually start helping people
