The death of an Anderson University basketball player was caused by synthetic marijuana, according to the Anderson County coroner.

Lamar Jack, 19, collapsed during practice on Oct. 4 and died several days later, Coroner Greg Shore said.

According to toxicology tests that came back Friday, Jack's collapse was triggered by a synthetic drug that mimics the effects of marijuana, Shore said.

"It has a chemical name of JWH-018," Shore said. "From what I understand, this is sold in drug stores and convenience stores in our area."

Shore said this was the first time he had ever heard of synthetic pot causing a fatality in Anderson County.

Shore ruled Jack's death an accident, and said the cause of death was drug toxicity and organ failure.

"I talked to Mr. Jack's father last night. He's certainly concerned," Shore said. "He's concerned that there might be other deaths, and he certainly wants to get the word out to make sure other families don't go through what his family has gone through."

JWH-018 was placed on a list of banned substances by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration in March.

The Anderson County Council is considering a ban on synthetic marijuana, commonly marketed as K-2 or Spice.

Seems weird to me that someone could go to basketball practice while on a fatal overdose of JWH. I once smoked slightly too much JWH, probably around 15 or 20 mg and I definitely was too scared and disabled to do anything remotely complex. And for it to be fatal I'd imagine multiple hundreds of mgs or even grams would have to be ingested.

I wonder if he had an allergic reaction or something. It seems somewhat implausible that he could overdose and then be fine enough to go to practice...

Man I smoked grand of the pure chemical back in the day. If you smoked too much you laid down and passed the fuck out cause there is no way you are walking anywhere. He had to of had an allergic reaction

Im calling bullshit. I bet the coroner found JWH-018 in his blood coundnt find another simply explainable cause of death and says "well shit that must be it". Athletes drop dead during the middle of practice all the time for a multitude of tragic somewhat mysterous circumstances I hear it in the news at least 5 times a year. Its disrespectful to this kid and his family to blame the drug and make him the local face of the legal high crackdown some politician in that county wants to embark on.

On another note its the illegality of pot that drives the consumption of these crazy research chemical THC analouges that we know fuck all about. If pot was legal this kid would still be dead IMO but we could be raising awareness about undiscovered heart conditions or whatever freak thing caused him to fall over dead.

Anyway my condolences to all involved tough way to die.

Im with you, im calling bullshit. Even though I don't particularly like those synthetic blends they sell at head shops, I have enough knowledge to know that jwh-018 wasn't the cause of his death unless maybe he smoked it and then went to practice and already had some heart problems and that may have triggered something...but still im with crimson, the toxicologist just was like "ahhhh im a dumb ass and I have never heard of this 'JWH' stuff so it MUST of been the cause of death." <<---- lol i bet that is the exact thought that went threw his/her mind too... 100 bucks!

I'll eat my (non-existent) hat if it doesn't turn out to be something like undiagnosed wolff-Parkinson-Whyte syndrome.

Oh fuck off you fucking piece of cock. No cannabinoid, synthetic or natural, can kill a person in any consumable dose.

Fucking fuckers.

I've seen a case of someone who actually injected K2 soaked water, and though they went batshit and took a fuckton of benzos to put them down (after 3 days), they were fine. I don't find it likely that this guy smoked enough for a fatality. What I'm wondering is where he sent off to test for JWH.

lol at the commenters calling for JWH-018 to be banned. The article clearly says it was banned 7 months ago. Stupid. Also, this:

Take it off the market! There have been alot of deaths from this crap across the u.s. How many more have to happen?

As far as I can tell, this is the first death attributed to the substance. Like, anywhere on Earth. Which makes this coroner's opinion seem peculiar.

(I don't know, are there other deaths blamed on this stuff? I couldn't find any data, but there are accounts of cardiotoxicity and seizures, and either of those things can precipitate a death if you're running around in a humid gym. Hell, you can die that way sober.)

Agreed. I contacted the coroner and asked for the autopsy report, specifically the post mortem concentrations of JWH-018 collected from his urine and blood. I received no response but autopsies are public record and can usually be acquired from the medical examiner's office after a period of time.

Great work. You're reaction is precisely the sort of online activism that any and all of us can do to push back, little by little.

We use the word "propaganda" to refer to a type of misinformation, a thing - but it is actually a process.
The process involves waiting for ways to slant media coverage of drugs.

The most common way is to find a death (or other public problem) that is apparently linked to some drug - regardless of the level of certainty of the link, and regardless of whether it is scientifically sound or not - and to use that chance to demonize the drug. Whip the masses into a frenzy over it, using the dead person's parents, and their own face, as posterchildren, and feed the flames with other stories of youth dying on the same drug while the fire is hot.

Pretty soon, everything is illegal, the masses believe that they have a say in things, the media effectively asserts its control and and refines its ability to drive public opinion, the masses have once again practiced letting unreasonable fears be the basis to strip people of their rights, and the drug war is shown to be successful, important, relevant, and also to look like a grass-roots movement from the masses themselves.

If you ignore human rights, it is a win-win situation for the powers that be. :(

Yep, that's what this is. If anyone reads the news there were several other high school age football players that also dropped dead this last week. Some from getting hit others, are thought to have had a bad heart. So what about the other kids? Maybe they ate french fries that day and they are the culprit. Yeah, that's it.

What a bunch of nonsense. People die without alway a full on reason.

BTW Slim, I have laughed my ass off at some of the sarcastic comments pertaining to several news articles. In fact, the sarcasm is so good I saved a couple. The article where there was an LSD bust and the other one where the pharmacist called the poilice on the person with pot. :D Classic stuff.

Not everyone falls to propoganda. This board is a good example. There are intelligent and knowledgable people thank God.

I wouldn't be surprised if JWH actually did have something to do with the guy's death. It's not exactly likely or probable, but let's face it - we don't know much about these legal "weed alternatives" and how they affect people with specific/rare conditions, or how they affect people who exercise heavily, etc. You'll never see weed blamed for the sudden death of anyone.

So a kid dies suddenly and JWH is found in his system, and the coroner says organ failure because of JWH use. None of us know the specifics, can anyone find the actual report?

In somewhat related news, this story had a headline reading "Teen Dies After Smoking Synthetic Pot" but fails to mention that chemical burns to both lungs were from smoking out of a PLASTIC CANDY (PEZ?) DISPENSER!
