Mushroom Season 2011 UK / Ireland / Anywhere else

in my experience, if you're trying to not bring attention to yourself, a dog is fine in a large open access areas where there's no livestock.
but farmers tend to get a little more attentive if you're walking a dog through a field where there's livestock being grazed. dogs and sheep don't always mix well, unless it's the farmer's dog.

it depends on how you come across too. if you're sporting a tracky with a statty straining on the end of a lead, looking like you've never seen the countryside before then you're obviously gonna stick out like a sore thumb.

Sporting a camera/map/raincoat and giving whoever you come across a friendly nod goes a long way, imo.

This morning I woke up feeling uber stressed because i was in the middle of a depressing dream [more of a nightmare really], where I'd gone to my awesome liberty field, and it'd been converted into a fucking race track for horses. The farmer was laughing at me as he watched me desperately try to find my bestest picking spots amongst the hundreds of tourists ... I kept seeing liberties right at people's feet, but not be able to pick them .. and most of the grass had been mowed and looked pristine ... the landscape had completely changed and it didnt make sense, even if I went into a nearby field. I ended up walking miles to the coast and getting lost and wondering around in circles feeling totally unable to get back on track. *shudder*

I need to go and check it out again since it's been a bit colder and wetter the last few days. if anything's happened to it I shall be shedding real tears.

That would be a terrible nightmare, seeing the horses tripping away happily, well could have been funny if you were tripping too hahaha. Which reminds me i had a dream where was asked for a job to go to a department store and get 7x8 plastic see-through roof panels ( i have no idea what they are) but i ventured on my journey only to get directed to one end of the store to the next by really werid looking employes talking werid stuff to me, without finding these pannels eventually i bumped into an asian chap and told him what I was looking for and he told me to walk outside and go to the beach.. but because i was so frustrated I asked if that was definately where the pannels where but he said "oh i heard you wrong, i thought you were talking about pure pacha legal highs" at this point i realised i was in a dream and got all lucid and shit then it cut dead lol... kind of a side track/shite talk but awell..hahahaha

Anyway, hows everyones picking been going? All the fields around me apparently have "had police around them" so i've moved to better places =D managed to get a good load but i'm really dissapointed in the size of the libs, really small and everytime I leave the lil uns to grow they get bloody picked

I always have dreams about shrooms too every season, I had a dream that I took acid the other night aswell, made me want to try it even more!!
I've only started picking about 3 years ago, and I'm worried it that I've left it too late? Went out last weekend and the weekend before, I didn't come home with a great amount though.. Anybody had any luck the last few days? We're promised rain for the next while anyways- my rain dance must have worked then.. hmmm *does mushroom dance*
So, yea fingers crossed that I'll find a few this weekend.

Still fuck all at my yearly field - only found four. Going to wait for it to rain a bit more before I head out again I reckon.

Went out today later than wanted but picked a few and the lads with me weren't happy with the ones in the field. I kept a few in image attached. There were other people in the field gathering them up so if you can give me your opinion on them I'd appreciate it before I go hunting again. Went to another so called good location and no joy there really. Hopefully tomorrow gives more! I thought the one far left and the two middle were good?

Two of those mushrooms are either panaeolus foenisecii or panaeolus subbalteatus. You will come across them quite a bit, but they're not the ones.

I tell them apart by the darker spore print, and the way that the head of the mushroom tends to crumble apart into pieces when touched. On Liberty caps, there tends to be a layer of translucent film across the top of the mushroom which holds it together.

The other lookalike species that I come across most is a certain species of mycena, which I think I heard might be poisonous. It looks quite a bit like the lib but has white gills.

I've seen a few look alikes of liberty caps.. with orange gills also ones with white gills. I've also seen a dark orange almost red looking mushroom that someone who isn't clued up could mistake for mushroom. They all don't look exactly like libs but could be mistaken for all they are bell shaped.

Mate, I fucking know how you feel - What the fuck is going on with Mushroom season in Newcastle?! I know someone from Blyth who has been picking for well over a month, ounces dried at a time. I went in 5 of the best fields going yesterday, HUUUGEE pastures covering a good few miles. We found 27. 27?! we should've been sitting on about 1-2K after the first field.

Absolutely sick of my life, this time last year shroom season had ended up here. The misty rain and temperatures of today and yesterday should kickstart something hopefully, going to go back to those fields and 2 more tomorrow and see if anything has started yet... :(

I have a load of dried mushys in the freezer and im planing on making a brew over the weekend.
I was wondering if anyone knows if i should deforst them first.

i really need to find myself a new spot or area even. the field that i found hundreds in is now over grown and the feilds near seem to be completly empty. i spent about an hour maybe more today and only came home with about 10 mushies ffs!

Why? what should i do then?

I recommend either grinding or cutting the shrooms to tiny pieces, putting them in a shot glass of lemon juice letting it sit for about 20 minutes. Then put the mushie/lemon juice mix in lukewarm water with your own tea made up (not boiling because it aint good for them) then strain the water through a teapot or similar. Add more water and repeat two more times; so you'll end up with three cups in total. Do about a half cup of water each time as it tastes horrible, but by the first-second cup you'll be feeling it. I find it a much smoother onset, but they don't last as long this way.

just back from a whole days picking in macroom supposedly the mecca of mushroom hunting in the south of ireland... how many did i get?? 0 they are slowly but surely sucking my soul... should i give up or just keep truckin??

i think everyone jumps the gun a bit, Halloween is peak season, unless there's horrid weather iceiness...where do you think Halloween came from...

loooks like next weekend I might go for me first forray, some colder weather, and rain coming again...and yeah, for me, late October seems to be the best time.....

Zero pickings in Ireland at the moment it seems.
I went to the same spot yesterday where I got 200 in 45mins 3 weeks ago & found none.
Temp needs to drop this week.

There were actually more of them in the north of Scotland about a month or more back than there are now, they seem to have died out here now.

This gives me hope. Hoping to get out one morning this week. Is early morning a good time to pick due the dry weather we've been experiencing during the day?

I think again that'sa bit of a myth...

If you pick at well known spots, early morning would be your best bet to miss other pickers.

Other than that, I prefer after lunchtime, on a breezy, pref sunny, but cold day...after a few days of rain and damp.

This is just because it's so much easier to spot the little fuckers. When the grass is covered in dew, first thing in the morning, the shrooms are a fairly dark brown colour, and quite hard to spot....after some sun and breeze, they start to dry out a bit, and go light brown, cream, even near white, you can sometimes spot all the patches from the top of the field if conditions are right, also sunshine highlights them, again, making them easier to spot.

Also easier and quicker to get them home and dried in good condition, if you have a bagfull of very wet brown shrooms they can all sort of congeal and squash into each other, and obviously a lot more moisture to dry out......

Plenty of people will prob disagree with me, but, unless you are using a known spot, there is no need for an early morning/dawn raid, in fact it would be counter productive
