What can the tobacco trade of the 17th century tell us about the modern war on drugs? Charles C Mann, whose new book has been called a 'historical Freakonomics', draws the parallels

It is fair to say that the global drug war began 400 years ago this autumn, when a man named John Rolfe obtained tobacco seeds from the Caribbean.

Rolfe was a colonist in Jamestown, Virginia, the first successful English settlement in the Americas. Most people know him today, if they know him at all, as the man who married Pocahontas, the "Indian princess" in countless romantic stories. A few history buffs understand that by taking tobacco to Jamestown, Rolfe launched the Virginia tobacco market – the primary force behind Jamestown's eventual success. That success hints at a third, still more important role: inadvertently, Rolfe's tobacco set the template for today's £200bn trade in illegal drugs.

^long with religious freedom, small federal government, and lower taxes. Now we have a large Christian tax mongering war machine. The apple never really does fall far from the tree, huh?

I wrote up a big reply to this but basically if you blame/hate on Christians your a rascist asshole PERIOD(.) Your just as bad the airport security performing a "random" check on some guy wearing a turban. Your just as bad as Eric Cartmen for thinking every jew is covetous. If you hate Christianity because people use(d) it to control other people than by your logic, you should hate LSD because charlie manson used it. Heck, you should even hate pot because mexican cartels sell it and use it to fund human smuggling. Fuck even hate computers for all the harm and shit that they spread. Child porn anyone? and now this reply is getting big again fuck

Sorry for going SOOO off-topic guys but there are alot of people here who hate christianity and they need to understand that hate wont ever change anything. WE NEED LOVE BROTHERS

I dont think anyone here hates Christianity man. Thats like saying i hate Algebra. Sure its a good way to calculate arbitrary things, and Christianity is a good medium to live your life by, but its kinda stupid to "hate" a belief or idea. I just think that most people here see past its inevitable flaws that come about from HUMAN interactions. And that goes for every other single religion. Its not just Christians. They simply get the most flack because Christianity is the most common religion practiced in the majority of countries from where Bluelighters live.

On topic: Honestly its hard for me to even think of human civilization without psychoactive substances. Today most people think about drugs as if theyve only been around since the drug war began lol. The truth is is that drugs have been around since the beginning of humans. There are even theories (valid ones at that! lol) that postulate that human consciousness came about as a "byproduct" of humans and proto-humans eating psychedelic mushrooms. There is an innate yearning for all humans to alter their consciousness...through whatever means are available. Today its drugs. 2000 years ago it was drugs and prayer. Before that it was drugs and prayer and meditation. Before that we werent conscious ;) I mean shit, theyve found breweries that are almost as old as many fanatical Christians say the Earth is (roughly 6000 years)

One long strawman; being an apologist for horrors committed by institutional power structures like organized Christiandom in the US (who ironically are in a big way responsible for American drug policy going back to the beginning) is not a good way to promote brotherhood.

Typical of the revolutionary bourgeoisie really. Once in power, the most revolutionary sections of the American political scene flip-flopped overnight from being opposed to taxes and tarrifs, etc to demanding stiffer ones (though in their new states favor). Staughton Lynd is a good source for this.

Between 1580 and 1610, Nicotiana tabacum, a species originally from the Amazon, became a fixture in every inhabited part of the earth. Almost immediately it attracted governmental ire. Bans on tobacco, some enforced by the death penalty, were enacted by France, Russia, Sweden, the Ottoman and Mughal empires, and the Japanese shogunate. The smoking weed quickly became so ubiquitous in Manchuria, according to historian Timothy Brook, that in 1635 the Khan, Hong Taiji, discovered that his soldiers "were selling their weapons to buy tobacco". Enraged, he prohibited smoking.

No anti-tobacco crusader is better known than King James I, whose Counterblaste to Tobacco, issued in 1604, proclaimed that smoking was "lothsome to the eye, hatefull to the nose, harmefull to the braine, [and] dangerous to the lungs". James sought to ban tobacco outright, but was rebuffed by a hostile Parliament. Pope Urban VIII was more successful. Infuriated by reports that priests were celebrating mass with lighted cigars, the Pope promptly – and successfully – prohibited smoking in the pulpit.

Funny how often this international charade is replayed with different substances- but in reality, every drug is the perfect commodity. Like Burroughs wrote, a smack dealer doesn't have to advertise, an addict will crawl 2 miles in shit just for the chance to buy. The Opium Wars though are a better starting point I think for the War On Drugs schema, where the drug trade is de facto considered a black market, but its proceeds always end up in the 'above ground' or 'legitimate' capital market. Same thing goes on today- drug money funds all manner of things, from politics to real estate to war to every conceivable kind of business (the national state and local municipalities get their cut too through tax money after laundering).

Christians who want to give nothing to the poor or make a single sacrifice for the benefit of humanity.
