Top Five of All Time:
1. Arrested Development - the best comedy ever written, the joke density makes up for its short duration
2. Deadwood - there just aren't words to describe this cocksucker, it holds a special place in my heart
3. The Twilight Zone - grew up on this, revolutionary for its time and still probably the best sci-fi show to date
4. Trailer Park Boys - the best it is at what it does, opened me up to the potential of mockumentaries
5. The Simpsons (earlier seasons) - set the modern standard for comedy, period

Honorable Mentions:
The Wire - I hate cop shows, but love this, only two seasons in though
Breaking Bad - would probably be in the top five, but I haven't caught up yet
Seinfeld - the show that got me into stand-up comedy, RIP funny Jerry
Entourage - my guilty pleasure, it's one of a kind and thoroughly entertaining
America's Test Kitchen - I love cooking shows, and this show tells you precisely what you need to know to cook well

I mostly watch TV to laugh, since I think TV can outperform movies when it comes to comedy. I do love the occasional drama, though. I also have a secret love of cooking and travel shows.

It's really hard to do just 5...

1) Breaking Bad
2) The Wire
3) Game Of Thrones
4) Louie
5) Trailer Park Boys

Mentions -

Archer/Unsupervised
Eastbound & Down
Wilfred
Shameless (UK)
Cops
Southland
Justified
Longmire

reading this thread i realize i don't even like tv shows enough to call any of them my favourite. i guess game of thrones? but i feel like that doesn't count because i love the book series and would love the show even if it was crap.

1. Party Down
2. The Wire
3. Veronica Mars
4. Outlaw Star
5. Daria

There is a yawning gap between No. 2 and the rest.

god i miss party down. such a great show.
'i think the preferred term is jigroes' cracks me up every fucking time. it's definitely in my top five too.

My unabashed love for Veronica Mars (and The Wire; both Levy and Bubs make guest appearances!) makes Party Down an absurd sentimental favorite.

Yet the context of the show is something I have never seen replicated in comedies.

With most contemporary comedies I tend to oscillate between dislike and like. I dislike at first; then, upon establishing at least an interpretation, if not an understanding, of the humor, I like; then I conclude a permanent dislike as the show comfortably stays in its box rather than manipulating expectations.

To me that is because these shows have not balanced absurd realism. Party Down has it down to a tee. It is obvious that the show is art in the sense that it is made for the enjoyment and vision of those creating it, not just a writer, or the writers, but the director, producers, and most importantly the actors.

Hmm... It's tough to limit this kind of thing to just 5 honorable mentions... to make it easier for myself, I'm just going to go with shows that are still in production. That's a little less of a mindfuck for me....
