The Dark Musick Thread

^That Siousxie and The Banshees track is splendid...Got that eastern vibe, dissonant sorta scales which sound immediately "dark". Anymore like that?

Current 93- A Sadness Song
Not really dark as in evil; just sad and nostalgic. A lot of people don't like David Tibet's voice, but I reckon this track would sound weird without it...

I love his voice! Not so much at first, but it really grew on me.

I've been loving Haggard music for a long time now. For me, the combination of a womans voice in high tones with a gutural man voice is epic. And Haggard does a great job. Listen to Per Aspera Ad Astra or Awakening the Centuries.

Dark music, though "Dark" is a somewhat superficial and childish way of labelling a work of art of any kind; is to me, that which carries the element of danger within its progression. It feels as though the artist and the listener are united in a work of varying shades of sinister, criminal, tragic, cynical or warlike tones.

I listen to mostly "Dark music". But to me, it is not dark. It is just me.

So here are my favourite dark songs including some that simply should be listened to by any fan of their stuff.

Depeche Mode - The Sweetest Perfection. Seductive and achingly full of desire, it references drug injection, thuggery and urban madness. A masterpiece of gothic industrial music.

Nine Inch Nails - 31 Ghosts - One of Trent's best. Very heavy and violent sounding, in your face and uncompromising. Another masterpiece of industrial. Cool amateur video in the Youtube link.

Coil - The Dreamer is Still Asleep - Magical, ethereal industrial pop. God bless Coil for All Time. The harbingers of industrialised Western music magik ;)

Dark Angel - Psychosexuality - Everything from the title to the lyrics is an attack on the medieval aspect of modern society's approach to womanhood. One of my favourite thrash metal songs. Amazing opening riff.

Damon Albarn [of Blur] and Michael Nyman - Boyd's Journey [Ravenous Soundtrack] - Perhaps the best dark soundtrack composition ever. Extremely overlooked but a work of genius. A huge influence on my own brand of dark song making. LOVE the mandolin rhythm section. Gotta rewatch the flick; it's megalithic!

Dark music doesn't always mean depressing music...

^I gotta say, black metal is very rarely dark to me. I cannot find anything mysterious or thought provoking in bands like Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult, mainly because the music is merely raw (and the musicians are utter douches). The Ruins of Beverast are an example of a truly dark BM group. Each to their own though.

I'd say that dark music has a general air of either unease or mystery to it. Dark shouldn't be taken to mean "evil" or atonal. It doesn't mean unhappy or depressing either, though it can. Thus Depeche Mode- Walking In My Shoes can be as dark as Darkspace even though they are light (dark??) years apart.

I'm just saying how diverse "dark" can be.
To enjoy black metal would be to see the world as fucked up for its system of ego breeding n mental slavery.
It's so far from that society shit that it's almost non-human.
I'm not a real fan of BM.
I prefer psychobilly but my kinda metal is thrash n various death metal.

"The sea drowned in stars.
Lunar exalted - Noctiluca -modor se niht

Unfurl them pinions for perennial flight through infinity.
You have never run aground.
You have never fallen.

Alles bin ich - Und ich bin das Eine
Modor se niht - Ich bin das All-Eine

Slow, Mightful, Astray
Imperishably enthroned by spirit of the night.
Midair through the spectral limbo forever.
Slow, Mightful, Astray

Eternal silence of night conscripted, breaching murky blackness.
Macrocosm a perpetual sea of tulwod.
Mightful wheels begin to turn in a monotony of sorrow.

Ich bin in Allem - Und ich bin das Eine
Lunar exalted - Ich bin das All-Eine

Alles bin ich
und ich bin das Eine
Modor se niht
ich bin das All-Eine

Slow, Mightful, Astray"

This paints a movie in my head.
Idk bout you....

^Those lyrics do sound good. I don't dig the band though. I reckon that Lunar Aurora and Verdunkeln are creating some truly sinister black metal....do u like either of them?

No.
The biggest reason I despise alotta bm is the drums sound like pure noise without rhythm n the vocals sounds like theyre coming from a well deep underground.
Its basically pure noise n garbage to me, other than Das All-Eine by DNSC cuz it sounds different.

Heres a taste of my taste...

^Kinda ambient stuff yeah? In truth, this ambient black metal craze is pretty crap beyond Darkspace and Paysage d'Hiver. Though I'm listening to the latest Wolves In The Throneroom, which has more ambient aspects then their previous albums, and is quite good. Not great, but quite good.

I've been listening to a cool group known as Arktau Eos. Weirdly weird stuff...

my personal favorite music composer (apart from john williams of course :) ) is akira yamaoka, he did the music for silent hill and its breath taking.

if you want something dark and obscure http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6RVOCDiZso4
if you want something just brilliant and simple http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_e8abf_Tds
if you want something a bit more commercial but utterly amazing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZmMD84XpCs
and if you want something and bit more depressing and empty http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WT8pfNCYOow

all above by the same amazing dude. enjoy.

Jandek - "They Told Me I Was A Fool"

Really interesting, this Jandek guy. In the past 30 years or so he's released over 60 albums of the strangest, darkest, most impenetrable music I've ever heard. What makes it even better is that practically nothing is known about the guy, he's a complete enigma. Most people only know he exists because Kurt Cobain mentioned him as an influence in a few interviews. Up until 2004 he had been self-releasing his albums through a company that he set up called Corwood Industries (of which he's the only employee) specifically for his music, completely sheltered from the public. People would try to get in touch with him to by mailing their questions and comments to the Corwood Industries P.O. box, but they would only receive order forms for his albums and sometimes cryptic little notes like "You might not like the answers you get" and other such weirdness. His music is so strange (his first few albums use only one chord), but so compelling and mysterious that I find myself listening to his music even though I don't particularly like it. A lot of people think he's some kind of antisocial, paranoid schizophrenic weirdo who keeps releasing music because of some strange, psychotic compulsion. I don't really know what to make of him, but every time you listen to one of his songs you feel like you're uncovering some hidden aspect of his personality - the more you listen, the more you get it. He's an interesting guy. Check out the documentary Jandek on Corwood if you wanna learn more about this guy.

"Nancy Sings" is one of his songs I genuinely like to listen to. It's the first song he ever released with another person, and it's pretty haunting, especially considering how random it is. Nobody knows who "Nancy" is, and she only appears on this one track. Some people think they met in a psychiatric hospital or drug rehab facility since, in the few interviews Jandek has ever given, he adamantly refuses to reveal any details about his music, his associates, or his life in general. Cool shit, man.

love these guys
;)

Psi Com - City Of 9 Gates

"Entered city in from a sleigh Vander's little baby voice hits the horses Only he they obey Left him alone, so he thought In his nakedness with the choice of One in seven fires best to suit his needs
There is a hood, it catches the wind It's up in the tower that lets in the light And bellows the fire The city's tight, but it loosens It's small but not for long The city's growing crooked
The city bleeds! Bleeds! It's rosy veins to empty streets Bleeds! Bleeds! Nine gates seal in the city Nine gates seal in the city
Mix the reaction and the boil and the brew A little less sweet, more bitter Oh, how bad tastes linger As the howl to the hound, as the moan to the man The voice in the peripheral says...
Bleed! Bleed! The rosy veins, to empty streets Bleed! Bleed! The rosy veins, to empty streets Nine gates seal in the city Nine gates seal in the city
What do you do, do you do When nothing amuses you Trade your fear for boredom Nothing like a trip to fix A mind that's sick of banging on the walls until they...
Bleed! Bleed! Rosy veins to empty streets They Bleed! Bleed! Rosy veins to empty streets Nine gates seal in the city Nine gates seal in the city Oh!"

every one of their songs is,,, perfect.
