Punk Fuckin Rock

I know it's all a matter of taste and opinion, but it's beyond me (as someone who was very active in the 70's punk scene) how you can then go and describe any of the above as 'punk' if you've discounted The Sex Pistols.
like you said it's a matter of taste and opinion. i didn't list the sex pistols because it was a list of my favorites. all of the bands i listed would be described as punk.

want to see a movie that will make you want to shoot yourself 3 times? watch "Sid and Nancy"

damn i could kick sid "vicous" ass with someone else's left hand.

i was never into hard punk, but i liked the dead milkmen :) and are the femmes considered punk??

Is this the thread where everyone states they like bands that make awfully bad music FOR THE SOLE REASON THAT THEY'RE UNKNOWN?

Oh OK, then I'll say I like The Peanutmen, I like The Bonus Materiales, I love the SyncMasters and especially like SAMSUNG.

Wonderful, wonderful bands. Why? Because no one knows them, so knowing them makes me really punk. DIY punk. D ork I nternet Y oghurt punk, but more punk than thou!

I love this whole punk obsession of spending 12 hours a day debating what's punk or not, and spending the other 12 hours talking about unknown bands that are cool because ... because they're unknown.

As The_Wood said in another thread: I'll take the music, you keep the scene.

agreed. i always have had such a distaste for people who like music bc it fits with what they think is "cool" even though to others it just makes them more uncool that they try so hard to be so different by being just like everyone they love :p i have always had eclectic tastes, and find beauty in every genre of music.

yes, country too. nothing like some ol highwaymen.

Sorry if I sounded too pissy in that thread, but I'm freshly out of the punk scene and I'm quite pissed off at it.

If you want to listen to good punk, get The Clash's first 3 albums.

Hi,

The title of the Sonic Youth movie " 1992 The year Punk Broke" with Nirvana etc.

is perfect. It means 2 things.

Punk broke through the mainstream with Nirvana etc. but it also broke (as in broken). Once it became popular it no longer was achieving it's original goal of being anti-mainstream whatever the style of the day may be.

Strangely enough the bands mentioned were favorites when i was15/16 but havent heared for years...until now!! Im coming of E and shrooms and thought Id have a mix of nOfx and pennywise, bad religion and more. Ribbed -nofx on now. Enjoying it!. Although Id enjoy trash cans banging together:)

I found the most insanely cool website. This guy basically writes album reviews (in a pretty roundabout way) and does interviews with a lot of people from seminal 70s/80s punk bands (like Dead Milkmen, Fear, X, Germs, Adolescents, Black Flag, Angry Samoans, Dwarves, Dead Kennedys, Minutemen, Ramones etc. etc.). His interview style is pretty laid back and he transcribes the whole phone interview, leaving nothing out, so you get all the awkward bits. It's pretty interesting to learn what a lot of those people are up to nowadays too, there was a hell of a lot of talent in early punk bands, and a lot of these people now work on movies, write books etc.

The Interview with Billy Zoom from X is one of the funniest things I've read. He was semi-drunk and kept asking some of the questions multiple times. Billy Zoom doesn't drink and is a christian so it makes for some hilarious awkward moments.

Anyways check out:

Mark Prindle's Record Reviews

Ahem...
"Punk ain't no religious cult
Punk means thinking for yourself
You ain't hardcore cos you spike your hair
When a jock still lives inside your head "
With that being said

Ramones, Dead Milkmen, Dead Kennedys and the Exploited

that's what i'm talking about!!!!
and i don't think i read anything that mentioned social distortion either :\ where's the love?

I'm wearing my Social Distortion shirt now...

Much love :)

I really dig Mike Ness's voice/lyrics.

As far as Aussie punk goes the Hard Ons are fucking awesome.

You know, ever since I discovered punk rock, I just love it. It just has that "feel" to it that other music doesn't. You know, just sort of a get up and go feeling.

the new lawrence arms is damn good... "oh calcutta". if you're just getting into punk, it's a pretty good record. I'd check it out.

For any fans of melodic hardcore make sure you don't miss The T4 Project. The album is called Story-based Concept Album and that is exactly what it is. There is a (somewhat depressing) story told through the songs and also through the artwork and text accompanying the songs.

Anyways it took 2 and a half years to make because it's a collaborative effort and the lineup is pretty exciting:

Drums - Trotsky - Subhumans/Citizen Fish
Drums - Spike T. Smith - Morrissey/The Damned
Bass - Jay Bentley - Bad Religion
Bass - Tony Barber - Buzzcocks/Lack of Knowledge
Bass - Mike Carter - Glass and Ashes
Guitar - Fletcher Dragge - Pennywise
Guitar - Greg Hetson - Bad Religion/Circle Jerks
Guitar - Peter Distephana - Porno for Pyros
Guitar/Vocals - Shannon Saint Ryan - The T4 Project
Guitar - Armand Tambouris - From Satellite
Keyboards - Paul Roessler - The Screamers/Nina Hagen
Vocals - Kirsten Patches - Naked Aggression
Vocals - Jason Cruz - Strung Out.

You can only buy it as Mp3s from the website, there won't be a CD release.

I just finished listening to it and it is pretty fucking good.

best drummer = josh freese (the vandals/a perfect circle)
best bassist = matt freeman (rancid)

Hmmm Matt freeman is awesome, but fat mike just as good and sings at the same time....No argument about josh freese though
