Philip Glass, Vangelis & Co - EDM or...?

Vangelis | Blade Runner 1982 (End Titles)

Played by Kebu in Helsinki 2019

Kebu's synth arrangement of Vangelis' Blade Runner (End Titles), performed here live at Kuudes Linja in Helsinki using only analog synthesizers, with some parts played live and others sequenced. The performance was recorded directly from the mixer to a stereo track, and later mixed together with the ambience from the room.

It's worth bearing in mind that the use of electronic instrumentation has a much longer history. Musique Concrète emerged soon after magnetic tape recorders became available. That allowed ANY sound to be 'sampled' and judicious tape splicing and editing resulted in complete pieces. Even before that acetate records were employed in what was referred to as 'electroacoustic music'. In the early 1950s simple tone generators became available and a number of composers produced entire works that didn't use conventional instruments.

A lot of people don't realize that the Futurama theme music is a slight remix of the 1967 Pierre Henry track 'Psyche Rock' although the Joe Meek 'I Hear a New World' from 1960 employed techniques that later generations refer to as 'circuit bending'.

I suppose Leon Theremin is credited with the first fully electronic instrument, the theremin, as long ago as 1928.

It all depends on what you define 'electronic music' as and what you define 'dance music' as.
