It's got Margot Robbie in a bubble bath to make up for it

Doesn't really do much for me.

Did you see where he got the special award thing at the Golden Globes last night?

no^ i don't watch TV and when i do, the sound is off - basically i'm not aware of award shows etc..

just finished "Heat" - Rob Deniro & Al Pacino.

excellent film.

now onto "Dejavu" - Denzel

i convinced my friends to watch "we are still here" with me on joes reco. i really enjoyed it, it had a nice feel to it, it had a lynchian quality to it i thought, some of the framing. i rly enjoyed the soundtrack aswell, esp the psych rock bits. i liked that some comedy was mixed in as well.

broke my brain in such a fun way. it was not what i was expecting and i needed to do some review reading to get my head working again.

was a lot better than i was expecting. a very entertaining watch :D

steve carells acting in this film was remarkable and unlike anything he's ever done before.

^Very much my reaction in the Big Short thread. Outstanding, it will be between The Revenant and TBS for best picture, I reckon.

The Martian

Meh. It's a nice flick, a good watch. I just don't get the hype. The cinematography isn't that great and the story isn't even that much better than Gravity, which had mind blowing sequences of beautiful and captivating cinematography. Although perhaps it isn't entirely the fault of the film makers, as Mars DOES look quite a bit like the southwestern US. As a film by itself, I'd recommend it.

Best Picture nominated? I don't understand how it was even considered for a nomination. Cliche'd dialog/monologue, typical Hollywood douchiness. It kind of felt like watching Armageddon 2 with a better cast, writing and production team. It doesn't stand a chance.

A film about Burmese/Myanmar pro-democracy activist, Nobel laureate and political prisoner Aung San Suu Kyi.

The only impressive part of the film is the performance by Michelle Yeoh who manages to look strikingly similar to Aung San Suu Kyi and is also quite endearing. This film could have been as good as Gandhi but instead its no better than a made-for-tv biopic.

i love dramas and the acting style of julianne moore, alec baldwin and kristen stewart; but this was exceptionally beautiful and well handled. if you've ever had a family member/close friend suffer from alzheimers this is for you. the content while confronting was presented gently yet honestly. a wonderful film. :D

That was the only movie I've gotten nightmares from.

Good movie (Still Alice), but I wouldn't sit through it again.

^ Its sort of funny...when I was trying to load that post earlier all I could get was a black screen which left me thinking this film really is dark.

gonna try to finish A Most Wanted Man or Interstellar..

Trumbo

elle's got a neat wardrobe, but the film puts her second. instead it's all about the Breaking Bad guy. elle is just a couple of angry-daughter glares and that thing where people swallow when they're crying. the movie itself is ok. biopics are always bland. this is no exception. a timely "question your government" message, delivered in rhetoric suited for the masses.

Low Down

more of elle playing a dejected daughter. that's her role, and she kills it in this one. the movie is about her and she gets tons of screen time. must watch for elle fanning fans. otherwise, it's just alright. all the usual biopic garbage. lots of "x years later," leaving behind unfulfilled exposition. and an ending makes no sense because its poorly and too closely adapted from a memoir.

A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night

a quiet romance where the two lovers never fuck -- the best kind. dope, orson wells inspired cinematography. it's the young auteur's first feature-length film, and it is accordingly callow. i'll check out whatever comes next from ana lily amirpour.

Excision

this is a much better movie than i was expecting. for most of the movie i felt that it was misrepresented as a horror movie, it being more like Heathers meets Wetlands. it even pays homage to Heathers with a croquet scene. Wetlands because it explores the relationship between sex and what's disgusting, but Excision is more interested in death than bacteria.

the lead girl is great in her role. she's got this strange protruding mouth, giving her a model-esque appearance. she spends most of the movie in makeup that makes her look like the girl from the Exorcist, but in dream sequences they take advantage of her looks by having her appear in a variety of morbid, high fashion looking costumes and sets. these scenes remind me of something i've seen before, but i can't quite put my finger on it. there is a spanish horror director that has a cult following. i've seen only moments of one of his films. i think it might be what these scenes are brining to mind. i think i've seen many other films with the same aesthetic. i believe they are all the result of this spanish director's influence. which is a big assumption without ever having seen one of his films.

even though it's clear where the plot is going from the get go, the way it handles that moment still feels off the tracks. it suddenly goes from an odd, icky coming-of-age film to the shockfest horror that its dvd cover markets it as. punching it into imdb, i see that it is based off a short film, which explains a bit. it's definitely an ending for a short film. while i haven't seen the short, i assume that the director found something else while expanding the plot and couldn't figure out how to successfully integrate the two stories.

***

having now seen the short, i can confirm the previous sentence. the short is quick little shock film, like the kind i used to see on the sci-fi channel at 3am. alright for that genre, but really nothing. leaves out the best part, the girl having contracted herpes from her father performing cpr at the pool. even though it has its own version of the sexually charged dream sequences, the short rides more on a daughter wanting acceptance from her mother. as opposed to the feature-length's focus on her peculiar exploration of sexuality.

no i don't think I could either. thats one definate downside to my fav genre of film (drama); you don't regularly revisit the films even the most amazing ones for at least 10--15 years. best example that comes to mind "i am Sam".

I recently watched both EX Machina and Interstellar overall I am conflicted about each film. Interstellar was too long and they both have an over abundance of predictable pedagogical anecdotes. Nevertheless I enjoyed both, especially the endings.
