Oculus. Had I not overheard other people talking about how good this movie is I would have never given it a chance. I recall skipping over this one when scrolling through Netflix in the horror section on more then one occasion. I mean come on, a story about a haunted mirror? Sounds cheesy, but was not. This film had me genuinely creeped out after watching. Will watch again and highly recommend if you are looking for a horror flick that is actually halfway decent.

I agree 100%. I watched it in theaters and tried to convince my brother to see it but he was very skeptical. But he rented it later and was impressed.

Saw Triple 9 the other night. Had been kind of pumped about it and hadn't been to the movie theater in a few weeks, so I was excited to go. Then I saw a few not-so-great reviews and when a movie initially comes out it usually has a higher rating on IMDB and then it goes down after the movie has been out for a bit. This movie had just come out and was already at 6.7 (now 6.6), so I lowered my expectations.

Possibly due to my lowered expectations, I found this movie to be rather enjoyable. Good action, cool plot, good pacing, and I like a bunch of the actors in it. I'm not sure why it has such a low rating or has gotten bad reviews. One of the possibilities I think may be because people don't like part of the premise of the movie since a Triple 9 is *very minor spoiler*
NSFW:
when a cop is killed on-duty. It draws all the other officers in because every cop wants a piece of a cop killer
. I didn't know if it was disliked in the same vain as songs like "Cop Killer" or "Fuck the Police".

Anyhow, it was better than the reviews and ratings had led me to believe.

spotlight

tense from go to whoah, despite the antagonist being almost entirely off screen. very moving film.

good to know L2R. Ill have to check that one out.

Just saw the big short. What a great movie. Entertaining and informative. 4.5 stars.

I recently watched both EX Machina and Interstellar overall I am conflicted about each film. Interstellar was too long and they both have an over abundance of predictable pedagogical anecdotes. Nevertheless I enjoyed both, especially the endings.

ugh interstellar? really? it had a few moments, but overall I hated it. I hate a lot of movies tho lol. The dark knight is the best thing he ever did. Interstellar was a huge disappointment for me.

Have you seen most of Nolan's movies? The only one that he directed that I have yet to see is Following. I'd put Dark Knight in my top 3 of his movies along with The Prestige and Inception.

I thought Interstellar was good, but I was a little disappointed with it. Most likely because I had really high expectations for it.

I don't know if there's any movies I've seen that I would say I hated. There's actually only a few movies that I can say flat out "I did not like this movie". Usually there's something I can take away from a movie that makes it even somewhat enjoyable. Maybe the acting was good, or the cinematography or the special effects/costuming/make-up. Maybe I learned something new from it, thought the concept was interesting, or enjoyed a few parts of the plot or storyline (even if it's just a side-plot).

--------

Has anyone ever seen Cube (1997)? I had never heard of it until recently and while it wasn't a great movie I've had it stuck in my head ever since I saw it about 2 weeks ago. The acting was only so/so and the dialogue felt a little forced at points, but the premise was pretty interesting. It was basically about this group of people that wake up in separate cube rooms. They don't know how they got there and they don't know each other. They don't know why they're there, but they have no option other than to try and figure out how to get out. Each cube room has a door on each of the four walls, plus a door on the floor and one of the ceiling. Some of the rooms are booby-trapped. I won't give more away incase anyone hasn't seen it and wants to, but I thought the concept was really cool and I'm glad I ended up watching it.

If anyone goes to the theater often, I'd recommend catching Eye in the Sky. Saw it a few nights ago, was an interesting thriller about the government (joint mission between multiple governments) using satellite imagery and stealth cameras to try and take out high value targets. They did a good job building up the tension which made it an interesting thriller. Would recommend. Has Aaron Paul (Jesse) from Breaking Bad in it, which was the main reason I went to see it. I didn't know anything about the storyline going in and had not seen any previews. Sometimes I think it makes the movie better when I don't know anything about it. I have no expectations then, so if it does suck there's not any real disappointment.

Also in the theater, I definitely recommend Zootopia. I also knew nothing about this going into it, and it turned out to be a really funny animated movie. I enjoy seeing a variety of movies and this was a fun movie to see in the theater. :)

Is that the one with Jennifer Lopez? I haven't seen in like...since it came out, but I've seen it. I don't remember much of it.

I recently watched Twice Born (2012), with Penelope Cruz and Emile Hirsch. I came for the Penelope but stayed for the story. (No pun intended). Breakdown of Yugoslavia and the onset of the war era, I enjoyed it and would recommend. Lots and twists and turns that don't really make any sense until the ending.

I believe your edit is correct and you're thinking of The Cell.

Cube
was low budget and had no actors/actresses that I've heard of before. I think it's a foreign film actually, but it is in English.

Cube IMDB page

The cube is an excellent film

It was so low budget they essentially filmed it all using a single set. Obviously the cube, with different props inside

The End of the Tour

The story of the Rolling Stone journalist (Jesse Eisenberg) who spent five days interviewing David Foster Wallace (Jason Stegall) towards the end of his book tour promoting Infinite Jest. Aside from the real life story which is pretty interesting, the film is pretty average. The interesting part of the story is the relationship between a successful but frustrated writer who really wants to make a statement with this article, and is very conscious of what is or isn't on the record, while the journalist is under pressure from his superiors to twist a story into entertainment. The rumors of drug addiction, for example, are what the editor of the magazine really wants on record, while Wallace really doesn't want to discuss this sort of controversial media spin, and the journalist really doesn't want to prod him about it. That dynamic is what makes the film watchable, really.

3/5

I've seen most of his mainstream ones at least. I usually find something about them a little off. I think he got the dark knight exactly right and I consider the best batman movie ever. Not crazy about inception. a dream within a dream within a dream. i get it and great visually but didn't love the story.

Im pretty critical when it comes to movies. I can ignore some plot holes or some simplicity but its a rare occasion for me to be absorbed entirely into a film. hard to please i guess and i have ADD. maybe hate is a strong word, but I don't care for a lot of movies that I see. I usually will fall asleep unless it grabs me.

finally got around to watching Twice Born after having it on my instant que for about two years. thought it was excellent and the best movie i have seen on netflix in a long time. it looks like netflix removed the film Elegy which was another film i have intended to watch for a while. have you seen it?

Interstellar was slow, long, and a bit frumpish but nevertheless a decent film. if birdman can win best picture i think interstellar should be considered reasonable.

Oooh man, twice born was sad man. idk, i like some aspects of it and they way they put it together but damn...heavy shit m8s. gf did not care for it. emile hirsch is kinda meh. decent netflix flick overall. 3/5

birdman was terrible sigmond. pretentious circle jerk. setting the bar a little low imo. =D

yo twice born was deeper than a porn starz vagina or the mariana trench mo-fugga - cant even rate dat shit cuz it-be-off-da-iggidy-diggedy-niggidy-skizzale.

i think emile hirsch sux but i enjoyed a few of the movies he was in: Into the Wild, Twice Born, The Girl Next Door. he should probably stick to romantic comedies.

birdman wasn't even a movie, as far as i could tell it was just a series of clips. the dialogue was entertaining at times but the majority of the movie was boring.

I agree, it seems like Birdman was less of a film than it was just one long sequence, but I still loved it.

but why did you love it? I didn't get it, it seemed to lack purpose/meaning. Seemingly it was a mediocre dramedy with good special effects and directing.(most of the directing ideas stolen from Martin Scorsese) perhaps the movie was meant to be a satire of the entertainment industry. If that is the case i still think it was mediocre.

It's charm for me (which usually isn't the case) wasn't the narrative of the film. Indeed, I don't think it was meant to be taken too seriously. I need to rewatch it because I haven't seen in since the week it came out, but the film was completely seamless. Like I said, it seemed like less of a film than just one long sequence. I loved the dialog exchange, the overall dark themed nature of the film, yet it was lighthearted and self aware at the same time. The jazz scores I absolutely loved. It's more of a piece of visual art to me than a hollywood style film, really.

But like I said, it might be worth another watch.

i think part of my issue with the film has to do with my expectations for it. i believe it was the film i looked forward to seeing the most that year. directing, cinematography and acting were great but the story itself was empty.
