What do you do when you can't hit a vein?

take the needle out if you're shaking so intensely you can't register and plunge. calm your nerves and try think less about the whole thing, i know it can be anxiety inducing. you'll only end up with missed shots otherwise.
 
I am like the OP: cry, whine ("Why do I DOOO this to myself?"), and throw shit..but eventually I always get it, usually after switching to a new rig and new spot. Luckily, after four years of daily IV'ing, I can still use all my veins. My boyfriend has only been at it a year and has already fucked up all his, even in his neck. :-/
 
My veins are barely visible.. but I use a new needle EVERY tiem religously. It REALLY makes my veins last. Seirously tenfold the amount of time as if you keep reusing a dull needle. It's insane how much damage you do when you do that. New needles also make it easier to hit a vein, sometimes a dull needle will push the vein to the side instead of puncturing it.

I guess if it did happen that I couldn't hit a vein, I prob wouldnt try IM b/c 1/2" wont be long enough I am not mad skinny, I might just shoot it up my nose. I dunno it would have to b epretty drastic.. i'll be determined to find a vein. Just calm your self down, breath in breath out, youll find that shit.

that is based on the hopes the nurse can hit a vein.
 
In rehab i heard a story about a guy who had some kind of cardiac operation and he left the hospital with some kind of injection thing right into the area by his heart and he would put dope into it instead of the medicine he was supposed to take. Who knows how true it is as you hear war stories out the ass inpatient.
 
Take a deep breath, do some quick exercise to warm up and get my blood flowing, take a hot shower.

It's very easy to get frustrated and pissed, then just start stabbing yourself all over like an idiot. That just makes it worse.

You need to relax, focus on good technique, feel around with your fingers for a good spot, and be gentle.
 
Oh, man! I go crazy when I'm having trouble hitting a vein! But, for the most part, I am able to hit relatively easily. I would say that, typically, on average, for those times when I'm struggling, I can usually hit on the fourth or fifth stick, which isn't too, too bad.

EDIT: I get really upset, discouraged and anxious when I register, slip out, and then have trouble hitting a vein again. It's the worst! With blood already in the syringe, it's ridiculously hard trying to re-register; you can't see the second spurt of blood, so you don't know whether or not you're back in the vein. I have to pull the plunger real far back and then sort of move my hand under the syringe to see whether or not the level is rising. It just makes the whole process that much more difficult... and it's in those moments I curse myself and my decision to switch from sniffing dope to shooting it. lol

I have the WORST veins. Nurses can never hit them. Last time I went to the Dr I needed a blood analysis and eventually the nurse just said Fuck it. This has happened just about every time Ive need to have blood drawn. I am a small girl with small veins that have been ravaged by years of dull needles and iv coke.

I drink at least two liters of fluids everyday. I always have a water bottle with me everywhere I sip from throughout the day. When I am prepped, I get my hairdryer and wrap myself in a blanket w the hairdryer blowing air into it, trapping the heat in the blabket. The heat makes my veins bulge like a mutha. I hit strange veins also that you wouldnt think to hit with a puny 31gauge 6mm needle. Tiniest needle ive ever seen its like a hair its so thin and short as well. Great for fingers, the inside of your hand where your knuckles lay, palms, inside sides of my feet, wrists. Be careful with wrists though, very delicate, nerve dense area. Any gauge other than the previous stated will blow those veins or wont even fit inside.
 
I don't have any problems hitting a vein.. which is a godsend because I've been abusing the same vein for years on end, on a daily basis.
 
Try to avoid the problem by researching correct IV procedure, using fine needles, rotating veins, etc. a great many people don't do this: they just jab away at the same vein until there's nothing left to hit, then move onto the next one, then the one after that. These are the ones who end up shooting into their necks and their femoral veins, and it didn't have to be that way.

If you can't get any of the "safer" shots, you've got 2 choices: stop injecting, or start injecting into far more riskier veins. When I say risky, I mean I know people who've had legs amputated; they simply couldn't get the needle bug out of their minds.

Yeah ill get real fuckin pissed sometimes. Ill go on a lil rampage an my room ends up a mess. But when i get all that out i sit down again and retry and i end up hitting. What pisses me off the most is when i register, start injecting, then the tip slips outta the vein and i cant reregister again. Im left with a syringe fulla dope and blood. You cant shoot that because of the blood an all the dope is wasted. Now THAT right there makes me wanna rip somebodys head off. And if it turns out to be that one extra fat shot, i just lock myself in my room because i am walking hazard.
 
I used to have troubles and collapse veins, especially with BTH.
The veins in the crook of my arm get shy and withdraw/shut down for periods of time.
Now, for the last year or so, I've just been using the major vein that runs from your wrist, down the back of the forearm and up. That guy never fails me and the track just looks like a scrape that's healing.
 
Never had a problem hitting a vein except once, and I didn't do anything except simply move on to another vein.
 
when i was in rehab and my veins were iin really bad shape. the nurse put something on my arms, was a cream or something and i think it was called silver nitrate or something. but it made the veins really pop up so she could get at them. the stuf kind of hurt. never knew what it was.
 
I too have problems. But I also have discovered there are two different colors of blood, bright red (which makes it feel like fire shooting out your finger tips) and the dark red blood which is the (good blood as I call it). What is the difference? I am scared of doing it anymore and want to know how to avoid.
 
Very rare, but it drives me fucking nuts and I want to scream. I'm glad it's rare, I just use my right center arm vein for a back up, so I'm set.

The bright red is an ARTEREY. It burns to high hell when you shoot in it. You can usually tell because the blood is more forceful and arteries are deeper than veins, except this a kind of superficial one along the wrist.

The dark red is veinous blood. If you can tell the difference, just pull out when you get the bright red blood? I use tar so itz harx for me to tell but ive hit an arterey four times before. Avoid hitting in the areas where you know youve hit an arterey. You got some bad luck if youre hitting them frequently. Try to hit visible, superficial veins. Good luck.
 
The only time I cannot get a vain is when I'm already so mangled that I probably have no business shooting more drugs.

So I guess pass out!! would be my personal answer to this question....

or, you could go buy a rock, or someting, and say fuck the barrel for the eve....
