Film What's the Last Film You Saw? v. Tell Us What You Thought!

philosophy of a knife, above didnt work

Link works, they just make you go to youtube to see it. I watched the trailer and determined two things

1 - it is about Unit 731, a real and truly horrific time and place in Japan for human atrocities. For those that are interested in the gore and depravity of mankind, read up on this history. I'd say it was a predecessor for the Nazi's experiments on Jews. Here's the wiki on it for some background.

2 - Philosophy of a Knife (2008) appears to be a horror film, meaning it is acting and special effects that APPEAR like acting and special effects (cheap). The trailer had no audio, just unrelenting atmospheric music that becomes annoying when run for the full 4min of the trailer, IMO :\

There was also The Men Behind the Sun (1995) which covered the same topic but presented itself not as a documentary or horror film, but almost as a film-film where we follow certain characters. While there isn't much plot (some prisoners try to escape iirc, while a soldier questions why he is doing this), there is dialogue (dubbed or subbed, your choice). Also shot in B&W iirc. Not a great film, but did a decent job of covering what was going on but with more of a movie feel to it. I would def recommend TMBtS over PoaK (basaed on the trailer).

great followup to the movie.

1000 junkies is a movie by addicts for addicts

only we would understand it, find it funny, etc....

Holy shit, never heard of that. Fuckin' crazy...

Edit: I went down a rabbit hole reading up on Unit 731. Apparently only 5% of the documents MacArthur bartered for were microfilmed and sent to the U.S.; Japan still holds the rest of the documents secret. All the scientists and generals got off scot free save a for about a dozen the Chinese captured... This is some really depressing stuff. Like really gory. Limbs amputated and reattached on the other side of the body and shit... Christ almighty at least we got the Nazis to turn over most of their shit, the Japs still pretty much deny anything really happened. No wonder the Chinese are so pissy about them.

Goodfellas (1990)

I'm on a Martin Scorsese kick lately, been watching a lot of his films (Oh my God I just remembered he directed Hugo, that was terrible...). Anyways, I've seen Goodfellas before, I just wanted to give it a refresh as it had been a few years. My recollection was of it being unremarkable.

My memory wasn't far off, this was another Scorsese flick that didn't quite do it for me. Much like Wolf of Wallstreet, Mean Streets... many of his films seem to have no real point save for the glorification of organized crime and violence, and the inevitable comeuppance that goes along with it. Joe Pesci won an Oscar for his role and rightfully so, I can't say this film was poorly acted nor poorly directed; far from it, Scorsese is clearly a masterful film director.

The problem is, he often draws out boring sequences, or has us watching two mobsters converse for five minutes about literally nothing. In the end, the film was thirty minutes too long to keep me entertained (and I have no qualms with 4 hour movies, this was only 2.5hrs) and it was just full of filler too often.

It's a well done film, but boring. Much like Casino.

6.5/10

Speaking of rats...

The Departed (2006)

This film is famous and won four frickin' Oscars. I don't need to tell you about it. It's excellent. Second only to Taxi Driver in terms of Scorsese films I've seen. Such a star studded cast. So rewatchable.

8.5/10

i hate snitches with a passion but the departed is one of my fav films of his
goodfelles is sick to with casino and shutter island not a gangsat one but fantastic none the less

Watching this sequel totally relaxed is a weird experience lol, everything seems so loud and out of proportion. Watched 4 yesterday stoned and I loved how overly creepy it made everything. Same thing here actually.

Somebody already posted this, I wanted to second it because it's so good.

As addicts we become disillusioned and forget the things that truly matter in life. I'm 3 days sober and this movie really helped me. Must see movie for any addict.

Incredible acting. I teared up a few times. You really feel this movie. One of the best drama movies I've ever seen.

Damn, the vvitch Was intense as fuck. Too intense for casual chill viewing. Still a great movie therefore 4+/5
Yeahhhh, not casual viewing lol. No gore and yet you're fucking glued to the screen awaiting the horror to happen.

I met a girl at a bar who had Black Phillip tattooed on her wrist because she liked that film so much. Not the weirdest tattoo I've seen lol

Snowpiercer (2013)

I'll start with .....

Really, I never heard of this in theaters despite the cast. It is apparent why - it sucks. Top to bottom, or should I say 'back of the train to the front' it thoroughly sucks. This isn't B quality, as the production is clearly A quality, but it just.isn't.good. 2/10.

PS - what powers the f'n train?!?!?!

So I reviewed this earlier (it still sucks), but I'm coming back because I just saw something that upsets me greatly. I am horrified to find not only have they created a tv series of it on TNT but that it has managed to reach season 3 and is still going. Worst of all, one of my crushes is a lead role. Jennifer Connelly, how could you? How?!!?!

Have been on a bit of a Halloween binge the past while so it was 5 last night. Not the best by any means but typical 90’s fare. Of course they had to show a bit of his face (looked about 30 lol) but some of the action scenes were alright.

Loomis of course steals the scenes as usual.

Before I forget:

The Handmaiden (2016)

I've been getting into foreign film a lot recently, mostly Japanese anime and French films. Been putting off watching this one as my wife wanted to watch it with me.

So finally the two of us sat down and watched all 2.5hrs of this Korean flick. Right off the bat it explains that dialogue will be in two languages and have subtitles in two colors so you can tell the difference. I'm like, "Damn, wish I knew Korean or Japanese so I could understand the subtle nuances..." but I digress!

To sum up this film without giving away the plot (which I really would hate to ruin for anyone), it's a NC-17 Christopher Nolan twist type film with an emphasis on lesbian sex scenes. Take that as you will lol. If someone told me that I'd be like, "Shit, I have to see that now!" Needless to say, my wife and I were both very horny afterwards. She turned to me and said, "We should have had sex after rather than before watching that movie," to which I replied, "Why can't we still?"

Very much an NSFW film lol. There's a gratuitous emphasis on men and their perverted fantasies. I haven't seen the rest of Chan-wook Park's filmography but I have a feeling every single one will have me glued to the screen in nervous anticipation.

What a great film. Amazon bought the rights to it so you can only see it on Bluray or their streaming service. Bastards.

9/10 - if you can stomach a drawn out Nolan-twist-LGBTQ drama this is about as good as it gets.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

I watched that movie on a plane to an interview. Had to watch Fantastic Mr. Fox after to regain my composure.

Last i watched is Barton Fink by the Coens. Really liked it but their movies always leave me with a feeling that i am missing something after the first watch. I think it is due to their blend of real/unreal that defies one to categorize it in either box, keeps a lot of scenes stuck in my head.

Doing a Middle-Earth marathon, just watched all 3 Hobbit movies and now onto LOTR. I just love Tolkien and the universe he created as well as Peter Jackson's directing of the movies. They are definitely classics, and one of the better cases of books turned into movies. They have the unique effect of taking me back to being a kid again.
