I'm three movies into the Battles Without Honor and Humanity saga. As the story progresses from post-war Japanese youth angst to something more organized and scheming I've greatly enjoyed it. The last three films take place in the 60s and the Yakuza are finally moving from organized-crime to survive, to organized-crime to thrive; they went from rags to riches. The young underbosses vying for power, wheeling and dealing. Now that I'm a few films in I recognize return characters, well... those that didn't die in the first two films.
Being a yakuza must've not been 100% dishonorable to the Japs. There was a scene in episode three (Proxy War) where the main central character, who's been a yakuza for 15+ years by now, is asked by his former teacher and a young man's mother to take him under his wing and bring him up as an 'honorable' yakuza, even shouting at the guy to go bid farewell to his mom lol. He brings her some American cigs at some point and she's so... proud, she doesn't ask how he afforded it, she just takes the cigs and starts puffing lol.
Of course, young men are often first to die in gang wars, not the aged leaders, and that's mostly what Proxy War was about; old men having beef and scheming with one another while young men die in their names over frivolous arguments.
Really good series so far, the plot is much more intriguing and easy to follow, and being based upon a Yakuza's memoires, I find it to bear a bit of the good ol' fashioned based on a true story vibe very effectively.
7.5/10 overall so far. The first film was bland, too violent, hard to follow. The following two have made great strides in becoming coherent and showing how the yakuza grew and then dwindled in post-war Japan.

The Texas Vibrator Massacre (2008 ) - 3.5 Stars - yeah, obviously this one if a porn parody, BUT it's actually equal parts horror and porn and the gore/death scenes are actually pretty impressively done and it has an actual TCSM-esque storyline. If you like the TCSM series and you can stomach watching straight people have sex, I say give it a go! (and yes, just like one person is murdered with a Chain Saw in the original, one person is murdered with a vibrator in this).

Watched the 4th movie in the Battles Without Honor and Humanity series, it was the best so far. I'd give it a 8/10 if it didn't feel like a desperate attempt to compete with Coppola/Scorsese films from the era. The story is really starting to flesh out and they actually had multiple scenes with new music (first three films used one of two soundtracks for every... single...scene!) and the production value seems to have gone up.
Gonna watch the 5th and final movie and then report back on it sometime later, I'm on some 3-ho-pce and about to throw in some psilacetin and it's becoming difficult to write lol

Space Sweepers (2021) <Netfilx>
The title gives you an indication, doesn't it? :D Korean Sci Fi set in the future where earth is dying and the mega-corporation UTS has been building livable places in orbit with eyes for Mars. I'll try to keep the plot spoiling minimal, but it isn't real deep to begin with. Premise is several crews run space sweepers collecting space junk for minimal cash to survive while people on earth live out the planets dying days. We follow one such crew and the pilot Tae-Ho and his team consisting of a captain, an engineer, and an all around robot. Deep in debt, looking to score, the stumble across a lost android that looks like a 7y old girl. Turns out there is the terrorist Black Fox group as well as the Space Guard looking for her with warnings that she may blow up, nuclear style. The team navigates getting a ransom for her, and in the process form bonds. Not to go deeper, but there are several thin wrinkles along the way (Tae-Ho's own daughter, the backstory for each of the crew AND the little girl, and finally our villain who reminds of of Gates or Jobs). If I had to pick a similar storyline I'd point to The Fifth Element, but this carries itself well without feeling like you've seen it before. Story isn't super deep but they more than make up for it with top notch special (space) effects and decent action sequences. Plenty of laughs, without being a comedy. Plenty of tugs on your heart strings without getting sappy or corny. Overall a very good spend of 2h, and yes it took the full 2h. At 1:15 I thought we'd near reached the end, and there were a few scenes that could have been cut to shorten it a bit. But then the last 45 starts taking a few plot twists, nothing too deep but enough to keep you tuned in. Just went you thought 'this is the end' they play one or two more which might be stretching your patience but ties the film up nice enough. Definitely recommend 8.5/10, with the caveat being it was a multilingual cast so I was glued to the subs the entire time. Even when someone spoke a form of English, the accent made it undecipherable. Idunno, maybe some may see that as flavor for the film, others may see it as a challenge (we even have characters switching languages mid-statements). Still, watch it, if you're good with a subbed Korean Sci Fi.

El Pepe: A Supreme Life (2018 )
It's a movie about Jose "Pepe" Mujica, former president of Uruguay
I didn't know much about his life story before checking out this movie, only that Uruguay had become the first nation in the world to legalize marijuana under his presidency, and that he drove to work as president in a VW bug (which apparently became iconic in Uruguay), but damn, what a life! From spending his early life as an underground "urban guerrilla" & revolutionary against a military dictatorship in Uruguay, to spending over a decade in prison, to getting riddled with gunshot wounds, to getting elected president...what a freakin' ride that guy had.
He came across as a very thoughtful, humble and contemplative man in the film, who was more at home tending to his personal farm or reminiscing with former comrades than he was with being head of state. His regret over not having children due to a lifetime consigned to revolutionary struggle, of constantly being in hiding or prison, was heart-breaking, just as his lifelong love story with fellow guerrilla Lucia Topolanski was heart-warming.
It's a sympathetic and subjective portrayal of the man and his influence on Uruguayan politics, but I really enjoyed it. It's on Netflix if anyone wants to check it out

I've heard it described as a cross between John WIck and The Punisher (film). I'd say that's accurate, as we have John Travolta playing the role of husband and father, and an opening sequence where the wife picks him up at the airport and they have some guys jump them in the parking garage. Wife is killed (spoiler), and cops won't do anything, even after he IDs the killer in a lineup, so JT breaks open the wall in his house, calls up his buddy from his old CIA special ops days who happens to run a local barber shop (of course). The difference between this and John Wick is that Wick was a professional assassin, everything is slick and calculated and done on his own. JT has a buddy, which adds some funny lines and allows JT to be human once in awhile (as best as JT can act it). Plot goes a little deeper than simple revenge, story has some interesting characters but overall not so much, a good bit of action (with those funny moments sprinkled in). If you want a solid film, go see Wick. If you want a decent film that's not so serious, this is ok, not great or even good, just ok. 6.5/10.

^ that sounds like one of those "scumbags mess with the wrong badass"-genre movies.
One of my favorites from that subgenre was "Death Sentence", starring Kevin Bacon...also "Death Wish" w/ Charles Bronson, of course!
"John Wick" was pretty good...came across as a little too "polished" at times imo, but still entertaining..."I Saw The Devil" is another good one, from South Korea...also "Taken", and probably other movies with Liam Neeson, but I never really watched those...

What a waste of a film. Was only 70 odd mins but damn it was a bit all over the place with the story and characters. Trailer looked ok but was quite disappointed how it turned out.

Amazon Prime (y) Just finished the final film in the saga yesterday, I'd say overall it was a 7.5/10 series of movies. The poorer plot/acting in the first episode is really just a reflection of the chaotic nature of post-war Japan in the 40s.
I looked up how much Amazon was asking for the boxed set of all five movies; $150 for the DVDs or $335 for a Bluray box set lol... I think I saw someone in the reviews balking about a $70 price tag two years back lol... if only they knew 2020 would be the great DVD and Bluray shortage!
So yeah, see Battles Without Honor and Humanity on Prime, since getting DVD copies is expensive/difficult. The subtitles are built in, no English dub.
The order of the films goes:
1- Battles Without Honor and Humanity (6/10)
2- BWHaH: Hiroshima Death Match (7/10)
3- BWHaH: Proxy War (7.5/10)
4- BWHaH: Police Battle (7.8/10)
5- BWHaH: Final Episode (7.5/10)
Q. Tarantino MUST have seen these flicks, some of the Underbosses are actors featured in his first Kill Bill film, such as the actor who played Hatori Hanso, the sword craftsman.

Classic series. I loved those "white folks scared of urban sprawl/decay" films from the 70s/80s. Love me some good pandering. Plus in this modern era of novel crime, it's hard not to cheer Charlie on as he shoots rando-baddy one after another heh. Plus the Jeff Goldblum early cameo in the first Death Wish cracked me up."Death Wish" w/ Charles Bronson, of course!

As far as "urban decay" goes, I also like some of Abel Ferrara's work, like "Bad Lieutenant" and "King of New York", among others in the genre. Also there's some lesser mentions, like "Combat Shock", "Basket Case", etc.
And "Street Trash", "Street Trash" is great!
That was kind of a big theme in the 70's and 80's, urban decay films which seem to be based on a perception of NYC during that time period

At least this had some potential. Group of urban explorers investigate these abandoned houses in this big forest - and weird things happen. The end.
Anyway lol some good shots with the drone they had and a sense of creeping doom through the film is done well.
Worth a watch if you come across it.
