The Indigenous Australian thread

i believe this is the smartest thing anyone has said in the las few pages of this thread. through education will come the mutual respect that is needed to fix this problem.
Exactly, look at Tanya Major. Not to mention all of the Koori kids I went to school with. The feral ones were the ones that never went to class and ended up dropping out in year 9, while the normal down to earth ones put in and tried to do well and ended up finishing their high schooling. Now comes the problem, how do we make them stay in school and actually learn something while they're there.

Some cultures will only integrate with white society in very limited ways. This is not to say that they should. It's fine that they don't. You just have to ask yourself, would you be prepared to give up your cushy lifestyle and become a fully culturally mature aboriginal? Who decides who's culture is the dominant one? I'd like to meet him and cook his testicles please. =D

P.S. It all depends on you're own subjective outlook on the world. Both cultures have shit hot things to offer. Aboriginals are sound in the technology of nature. A white man like myself or most of those reading this would have very little idea of what to do if stranded in a remote location. Vice Versa, white man knows more about computers and tantric sex.

Mmmmmm.. remote locations, computers and tantric sex.

I havn't really even wanted to touch this issue cos it's so sensitive and really gets me in a bit of a huff so i've stayed away. I'm in total agreeance (<-- that word looks really wrong?) with lost punk. [sorry, i know you think i'm some sort of idiot (and yes my spelling sux) so it's not going to help your case if i'm on your side but i agree with a lot of what you say on a lot of things] so am just piping up a little.... this issue is FAR too complicated....

I have just been reading the news lately about the Howard government banning alcohol and porn in aboriginal communities. I’m not aboriginal but I love drinking beer and I do look at porn from time to time. And never has the though of having sex with a 6 year old crossed my mind. I’m willing to bet that there are people like me in indigenous communities who probably feel discriminated against. How can other races drink alcohol and look at porn and why can’t they. Oh by the way any indigenous Australian in here I love to hear what you say about this.

I'm going to pass this on to Australian Social as it doesn't really fit the AusDD mould.

Apologies if this is not welcome Aus. socialites. :)

I think thats just a fairly broad summmation of a very deep and complex issue with regards to the Indigenous community.

I sincerely dont think your point of 'I do abc and I dont to xyz, therefor everyone should coincidentaly assume that all citizens would act the same' is going to invoke any serious discussion.

There is a thread with a plethora of insightful comment about Indigenous issues elsewhere on Aus Soc. You should check it out, I personaly think it is one of the best threads on here.

But I'm glad you have just started reading about this issue, better late than never i guess ;)

^ yep thats the one

Is that lifted out of the Western Australian Manifesto?

If you wrote more than two sentences I'd be suprised. Quit wasting everyone's time. Possibly there's some video games you could be playing?

I believe that was one of my personal fave quotes early in the thread

IMO- He's rejected some very well formed arguments throughout this whole thread.. One less than witty comment...

I wouldn't say that anyone has rejected any arguments, well formed or not. IMO the majority of participents in this thread have presented and rebutted fair commentary the whole yay through thats what debates are all about. Granted that it all looks a whole lot better since some of the attitude has been removed, but thats what mods are for

blind_injustice, I've given reasons for every argument I've rejected. That one less than witty comment was made in frustration when my argument was continuously derailed for reasons unrelated to the actual content of the thread.

For the record I think preacha's points were well thought out (which is rare) and I'm glad he took the time to respond instead of simply being a smart arse. However I still think they are selling the indigenous population short.

ok, ill start by saying that i did not read the entirety of the first post, nor did i read pretty much any of the reply's. BUT I did get the gist of this thread?

So you've read the thread now?

From just then reading back over what you've posted, it's easy to see that although you have tried to come to the issue with compassion you still think that Aboriginal people are beneath you. I believe you actually said neanderthal at one point. A hominind, Homo neanderthalus, that died out long ago in Europe. Not to mention a separate branch on the evolutionary tree altogether, that broke off long before modern Homo sapiens, the species in which Indigenous Australians are included.

I'd suggest in future for the sake of seeming more educated, that you invest in a scientific encyclopedia or spend some time tooling the main drag of Wikipedia.

I fail to see how educating myself on the history of human evolution (being the devout atheist i am) will help me come to better terms with the arguments/opinions put forth..

And i believe that you have summed up my gripe perfectly with the comments your just made... It is the 'HISTORY' I believe we need to get away from (either pre-hominind or post settlement), not saying we need a fresh start and to ignor the past, just that we need to stop looking backwards in trying to go forth...

You can't have insight without looking backwards. The current situation is a product of the past.

This all sounding kind of similar, like last page of this thread similar. So I'll just agree to disagree.

The fact is every face has been fucked over at some point. if black Aussies want to cry about it, fine, i would too, but dont expect me, a recent immigrant with NO control over the past, to give a flying assfuck, much less apologize or do anything about it. Fuck that.
