Greater Manchester cop Robert Carroll, 41, traded stolen police gear for heroin and drove a police car to a dealer's home after twice sneaking away during a shift.

A police officer from the Holme Valley who was caged after becoming addicted to heroin while working undercover has failed to convince top judges his sentence should be cut. Greater Manchester cop Robert Carroll, 41, traded stolen police gear for heroin and drove a police car to a dealer's home after twice sneaking away during a shift. The father-of-two from Brockholes was jailed for 14 months at Manchester Crown Court in February, after he admitted theft and misconduct in a public office.

Two senior judges at London's Appeal Court rejected a sentence challenge by Carroll, saying that, while the case was "sad", his crimes called for tough punishment. Mr Justice Jeremy Baker said Carroll, who was based in Oldham, did "valuable work" as an undercover police test purchaser for almost three years as part of an undercover drugs sting. However, he was "exposed to heroin" during the covert work and became hooked on the class A drug in September, 2009, before seeking help from the Lifeline charity.

Oh, poor fellow. It was just an incidental exposure in the workplace. What tangled webs we (they) weave.
