How good is valium for social anxiety?

very!

ive heard it is right up there w/ klonopin.

i havent tried kpins but i loooove valium.

xanax, at least in the doses ive taken, sucks ass.

yea, a year later: valium= good.

xanax = bad

clonazepam = depends on the person.

Lorazepam (Ativan) is probably one of the most effective benzodiazepines for social anxiety. It's probably one of the most effective medications prescribed for anxiety. It has far less sedation, ataxia, fatigue, drowsiness, and side effects in general than the majority of benzodiazepines, however it is one of the least recreational. I find that it causes the least memory problems - but keep in mind that all benzos are amnesic to an extent.
 
Ativan seems to make me confused in doses even as low as .5mg.

Xanax for social anxiety in my book.
 
In my opinion Diazepam isn't all that effective for social anxiety disorder. Its too sedating and really clouds my thinking. I think that Diazepam is more effective as a muscle relaxant than an anti-anxiety agent but that is just my opinion. Alprazolam is great for those who suffer panic attacks and is pretty effective for social anxiety disorder but has a pretty short duration. Clonazepam and Lorazepam are both effective for counter-attacking anxiety for at least 8 hours. Lorazepam is probably the most effective benzodiazepine for anxiety in general, which would include social anxiety. I don't think anything is more effective than Alprazolam for 'specific' social events. Not everybody reacts the same though.
 
depends on the level of anxiety

there's no "quick fix" to a true social phobia

popping a pill isn't going to make you more social

...i would suggest a professional review the "social anxiety" factors
... in case there are other precipitating factors such as OCD.
... a general anti anxiety tab that is relatively safe is lorazepam ...this is probably where you should start

diazepam is pretty heavy ...you definitely won't feel anxious, but you probably won't be very social either

cognitive-behavioral therapy seems to be effective in combination with medication to help eleviate social phobias and anxiety.

i'm curious as to the factors you consider when you describe the situation as a "social anxiety" issue ...would you care to elaborate ?
 
Valium works VERY well 5=10mgs (newbie), 20-30mgs (tolerant) for SA when combined with 2-3 drinks.
 
I have a degree of social anxiety. I get really nervous in public sometimes. I would try Valium to see if it helps.

My social anxiety has actually gotten better with time. I remember at the beginning of the semester in one class, the professor had us go around and say our names. I was freaking out, palms sweating etc, until they got to me...and I said "Dan", and after that...it was done with.

Social anxiety is a bitch, there are drugs that are perscribed to treat it that have a less chance of abuse/addiction than benzos (Paxil, even Lexapro), but the withdrawals from these can sometimes be uncomfortable. Although, the withdrawals/side effects from benzodiazepines can be albeit fucking hell.
 
With my battle with social anxiety, I would say Valium ranks up there with Klonopin and Ativan. With time, the side effects of Valium will decrease. No one says you're going to be a social butterfly with any of these drugs, but they do suppress the anxious feelings. It gives you a great opportunity to do cognitive behavioral therapy and exposure therapy, which are very effective in fighting anxiety disorders. BTW, if you feel valium is too sedating, try taking half. Get by with the least amount possible, to give you room to titrate your dose. Good luck.
 
That is the one thing that sucks about using benzos for their anxiolytic properties: mid-day apathy and drowsiness. They need to bring back the bored housewives drug, Dexamyl.
 
I think that most people who say valium is too sedating just takes too much, I use it every day and I am on 15mg's now. One 5mg pill should do the job, you can't be totaly anexiety free without any sedation.

Of course xanax will work better, but for beginners its so strong you WILL behave differently, and you WILL not notice it yourself. I save xanax for the really tough days, like tomorrow, going to the city with a family member and thus not being able to buy dope....
 
Also remember when your using the long acting benzos they tend to build up your system and still contribute to a "chilled back" feeling even days afterwards..

especially valium... i take alot in one night and im chill for a couple of days
 
Lorazepam sucks shit, how could any of you say it is one of the most effective benzo's for anxiety? LOL yeah right. I had some major panic attacks and even 2 or 3mg Lorazepam didn't touch me or phase me one bit. I would say any benzo beats Lorazepam hands down. Lorazepam is the weakest benzo out there.
 
No, maybe I have a high tolerance for benzo's because 20mg Valium didn't do much for me either. I'm hoping Clonazepam is a lot better benzo, because I have never really done many benzo's except for the fact being prescribed Lorazepam which didn't help my panic attacks one bit.
 
The only people who find the most relief from benzos are anxiety sufferers....


Chances are you wont feel much unless ur anxiety is high before taking it

which in that case they are a godsend
