im sort of going through the same thing....in the stages of stopping benzo use altogether, althoough still using them sporadically (off them for a few weeks/months) then a may have a weekend binge or maybe even a few weekend binges in a row and then stop again.

im led to believe z-drugs (zopiclone, ambien etc) do work on some of the same receptors as benzos,so i guess that may affect how well they work for your insomnia, although im not 100% sure....i suppose there is only one way to find out! =D

i have a very early shift tomorrow and had very poor sleep last night so its very important i get some good nights sleep tonight, its 5.10pm here (uk time) i have to be up for work at 4.45am (uk time) so im unsure when/how much i should begin my ambien doseage>?

so all you insomnia/sleep/benzo/z-drugs experts any ideas pleeeeeease.

btw i have a huge benzo tolerance, and sorry to the OP for stealing your thread...oh and one last thing,i find with zopiclone they leave an awful metallic taste in your mouth for a good 24 hours.

good luck and sweet dreams ;)

Zopiclone is similar to a benzodiazepine but has a different structure. Its a Z-Drug which means it doesn't possess all the qualities of a classic benzodiazepine, but rather the sedative effects. Zopiclone does have cross tolerance with benzodiazepines which means if you are tolerant to benzodiazepines you may be tolerant to Zopiclone. Although, this isn't always true. Some people are still able to feel the effects despite being addicted or tolerant to benzodiazepines.

zOPICLONE DIDN4T HAVE MUCH THERAPEUTIC VALUE FOR ME;;; AND IT LEAVES A NASTY TASTE IN THE MOUTH and it only helps you get to sleep not stay asleep (and there are anti-histamnes that are non-addictive like "Alimenazine" which do a better job than zopiclone, or zolpidem for tha matter, .... furthermore recreationally it sucks ass....

but thats just my opinion ;)

I love zopiclone, and I don't have this metallic taste at all. The only drawback is the short half-life (but longer than that shitty - for me- zolpidem).

Sorry guys, I must be lucky :o

I much more prefer zolpidem! I can actually get to and stay asleep on it. Only drawback is that tolerance kicks in real quick...like within days.

I still use my Rx for Lunesta (S-Zopiclone) from time to time to space out my benzo usage.
I have never had a problem with the metallic taste at dosages up to 6mg.

I've always wondered if there was a reason behind never tasting the metal... not that I mind it.
The Lunesta doesn't works so great for me as far as keeping em asleep but it usually does the trick decently for putting me to sleep. I can't say I prefer Zolpidem outright but it'd be a tough call. For me Zolpidem didn't keep me asleep and sometimes didn't even put me to sleep, but it felt better over all. The Lunesta leaves me feeling really weird if I can't get to sleep son after taking it.

I also don't have any experience with Sonata (one of the other Z-drugs, Zaleplon)

Way back when I first got on psych meds as an adult, first sleeping pill was Lunesta, like I said besides the metal taste it worked pretty well. It lasted for may 2-3 months before that stopped working. Next was Ambien. Didn't make me sleep at all even from the beginning.
Now I'm on 400mg Seroquel XR and 45mg Remeron for sleep, it doesn't knock me out but I have more of a problem staying asleep. If I don't take any sleep meds, (or alternately how it was for a long time before this combo worked) I'm up for 48-72 hours and then crash for 10-15 hours or so, rinse and repeat (I should mention this is not under the effects of anything but synthetic cannabionids)

Zaleplon is weak.

^ Zaleplon helps me with minor anxiety pretty well. I think it is a hypnotic or some such? idunno but I snort 2 or 3 (can't remember mgs) pills and my anxiety melts away=)

I am not sure what an anxiolytic is, but I assume it is an anti anxiety med. I dunno, xanax and klonopin and valium helps me if I have a BAD anxiety attack. But if I just have mild anxiety, benzos are kind of overkill. Even .25 mgs of alprazolam is too much. But I found that Zaleplon stuff I had stashed away since forever, and tried it. It has been helping me since.

For some reason my drug addict-ness prompts me to snort them though hee hee.

Here is the difference: Zaleplon is structurally similar to benzodiazepine but it lacks certain properties.
It is often called a Z-benzodiazepine. The difference is that benzodiazepines are "non selective" to the GABA-A receptor and have anxiolytic (anti-anxiety), muscle relaxant and hypnotic properties.
Z-Benzodiazepines (Zaleplon) are "selective" to the hypnotic properties of benzodiazepines.
So this means Zaleplon is just a hypnotic and has very little anxiolytic effects. So this is why its prescribed for sleep, not anxiety.
But I have heard of some people get some anti-anxiety effects.
