To skip right to the point, scroll down to the bold text, but don't think of flaming me if this is all you read. ;)

There are many people who believe zolpidem to have no recreational value. I say if you're looking for an intense, euphoric or psychedelic experience, you're going to be disappointed. It works much better as an anxiety-reliever rather than euphoria-inducer. After all it's nearly identical to a potent hypnotic benzodiazepine.

I find myself to be a rather unfortunately anxious person, and Ambien arguably works better at decreasing anxiety than ANY benzo I've been prescribed including diazepam, clonazepam, temazepam, and lorazepam. To those of us with high anxiety levels, simply being freed of anxiousness is intensely euphoric in itself. Then, on top of that, add some very mild but entertaining visual distortions and you have zolpidem! I get it prescribed, and at first I used to just take one orally and enjoy....but just as with any drug worth abusing..... 8)

I wouldn't go as far as saying I'm addicted to it. No part of me feels like I need Ambien, even on nights when sleep doesn't come easy I can very level-headedly say no to it. I simply enjoy the piss out of it, and now that I've built a small tolerance, I don't completely black out anymore nor do I get all that sedated, so the effects are very easy for me to enjoy. I almost completely left behind oral ROA and now insufflate pretty much every tablet in the bottle. I love the effects this way, I feel they're more euphoric, they hit extremely fast and call me crazy but I think I've come to actually enjoy that burn. Crazy I know... :!

I'm usually good at limiting myself to how many I will do in one night (usually start off snorting one or two right away, with a third booster later on, occasionally a fourth if it's a long night, never more), and I also do my best to space it out and not do it every night. Also, my doc stops scripts for a couple months here and there, so I inevitably go without it for long periods of time, nor do I usually have an abundance of it, and this is fine with me! However, again, as with anything worth the time, I slip up on occasion, binge, finish off a whole script in a week, etc..

Having said all that, I'm interested to hear other people's experiences and relationships with zolpidem. I feel like it's a somewhat easy drug to regulate one's self with, unlike opiates. However, simply for the pure enjoyment of it, I binge on it when I have it, and I occasionally feel some sort of rebound from it. For example, I haven't had an Ambien script for a few months, then recently I just nabbed a script. I binged on it for the past three or so days, which is not uncommon, however I've felt way overly-emotional the past few days, and yesterday I nearly cracked from a wave of depression. I've been known to get like this from time to time, but part of me wonders if the Ambien played some kind of role in this, hence why I ask about other people's stories of abuse.

Obviously, the best advice is uhh duhh stop snorting ambien. Clearly, but let's be real here. I'm more interested to hear about other people's recreational use of Ambien, how they maintain it, what rebound effects have been felt, and whatever else you guys have to say about it.

Please, let's keep the flames to a minimum. I'm really not interested to hear how you think Ambien is retarded, useless, whatever. :)

Thanks!

I had a ambien script for around five years and abused it many times orally and insuflated.

It got to the point that the hangover, anxiety, and depression I got from it was so bad I had to stop using completely. Even for legit purposes.

dude i overdosed on that. i was so out of it that i kept taking more of it. i took like eighty mgs in less than five hours. bad shit.

I feel like zolpidem has a very cocaine-like quality to it, which may sound weird seeing as it's a hypnotic sleep sedative and coke is a powerful stim. However, when insufflated (and I hear even more so with IV) the feelings one gets shortly after snorting it can be compared to that of cocaine. I feel like it immediately stimulates me, increases my alertness and willingness to go be social, go walk around, go do something, etc.. You would think snorting a powerful sedative like Ambien would knock a person out with the quickness, but it really does not seem to have this effect!

The first time I ever took Ambien, I took 10mg orally, and when it kicked in I began running around the house laughing and giggling at everything as it warped around and changed shape. I ended up staying up all friggin' night!! Even when I'm tired, a bump or two of Ambien will get me going and I'll suddenly want to stay up to enjoy the high!

This is interesting. I hope you don't mind if I ask a few specific questions.

- How long are your periods of use?
- How much would you normally use in one sitting?
- How many days in succession would you use?
- Would you use during the day, or only when you're ready for bed?

I'm simply curious to know how similar your usage is to mine because I feel like I'm beginning to get the same effects. For comparison, I answered my own questions:

- How long are your periods of use? - The longest period of time that I had Ambien at my disposal was just a couple months. 3-4 months tops.
- How much would you normally use in one sitting? - My average Ambien night is 10mg insufflated, followed by another 10mg insufflated shortly after, then usually another 10mg booster an hour or so later. I really try hard to keep it under 30mg a night but sometimes slip up.
- How many days in succession would you use? - I also try hard not to use days in succession but again, sometimes weekends lead to a "binge".
- Would you use during the day, or only when you're ready for bed? - I've only used Ambien in the day once, for curiosity, and was NOT happy with the way I felt the next day so I never did that again.
- What was your reasoning for use? - Purely recreation. I don't even use it as a sleep aid, that's what melatonin and DPH are for. Ambien is too fun to sleep through. :p

I have no control over my zolpidem usage except that here in Finland they have a system which tracks all the prescription drugs bought. Zolpidem is one of the substances they wont give out over the normal monthly dose so that prevents doctor shopping.

When I get box of 30 every month I take the first night one, second night two or three and at the morning after the third night I find only empty blisters of them and that I have been messing on the kitchen eating all kind of stuff from cereals to bacon.

But I dont get any WDs or rebound sleep problems.

I don't mean to worry you, but I strong advise you to stop taking Ambien

Sleeping pills can be scary. I have a friend who ended up in an in-patient facility for Ambien addiction, and others who I don't think go to bed without taking it either.

I STRONGLY recommend switching to an anti-anxiety medication instead. I had insomnia for about a year off and on, and have found these to work the best. If you are responsible about taking a small dose each night, they can be really helpful.

Just re-read your post, and saw that you've tried benzos before.

Everyone is different, but for someone who is as anxiety ridden as I, I have found talk-therapy to be extremely helpful, along with taking some form of medication.

I'm taking Zolpidem for the past 2 years, and I'm definitely addicted to it. I'm at that stage where I think it's more of a mental barrier then anything else. I WILL NOT go to sleep without it. At one stage I went 3 days without sleep just because I didn't have any. Now I must take 3 pills before sleep and maybe it will work.

I only had the hallucinations in first week of taking it, but it goes away the more your body gets use to it.

I no longer take Ambien as a sleep aid. It's purely recreational to me now. I feel like melatonin does the trick, and DPH is equally as effective as Ambien for tough nights.

However, after I do binge on it for a couple days, the first night without it can be somewhat difficult to fall asleep, but still, such a minor speed bump.

i have been taking ambien for about a year. switched to zoldipem and it was weak now back to ambien. ya i don't really feel the effects anymore. so you snort / smoke it? and you can shoot it? curious about that now... i do think melatonin works good for sleep also. i am in your similar situation, love getting the script refilled and usually make it last 2 weeks instead of 4...

Ambien = zolpidem. Do you mean generic vs name brand?

I have not noticed any differences between name brands and generics for any drug. If it says in the that it contains x amount drug z it will actually contain x amount of drug z no matter who produced it. But we have very well regulated drug industry and strict import rules here.

It might be that you live in some third world country that do not have such regulated drug industry and there might be inconsistence of amount of drugs in each pill because the use of old manufacturing techniques and machines, lack of educated workers and simply the greed of corporations whose CEOs might just want to make more profit by cutting the active ingredients amount.

I went through 20 pills in about 4 days. I must have had an amnesiac episode in the middle of the night the other night and consumed a few at once. I cycle through Ambien every once in a while for insomnia. I take it nightly for 3-4 weeks, and then I stop for months or a year.

This cycle I have been on is longer. I been taking 5-15mgs nightly for the past 7 weeks. I woke up last Wednesday with HORRENDOUS anxiety and depression. I could not figure out exactly why. I believe it was the Ambien so I decided to stop taking it that day. I suffered Thursday and Friday so badly with anxiety. I realized on Friday that I had consumed many of those ambien at once when I counted my pills left to throw them out. I was relieved and scared as I realized that I took all those pills in a short period of time, but it was a relief that I attribute that to why my anxiety had been off the charts for 3 days.

I have been off it for about 5 days now and am starting to feel better. I believe it is an awful drug and it definitely affects me adversely. I will not take it again as I will never go through the anxiety and depression that hit me last week. I have no dependence on it and have no cravings for it whatsoever, but the way it affects my brain chemistry is frightening.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I too have had similar experiences but not to the extreme you speak of. I seriously make an effort to not use Ambien in any capacity two nights in a row, and usually can limit myself to a night or two a week. On this schedule, everything seems to be a-ok, however as soon as I start binging on it, the effects you speak of start showing their heads and rather quickly too. If I binge a weekend on it, fri night, sat night and sun night, I usually feel really anxious and depressed on mon and tues and then I clear up later in the week. I also have a lot of trouble falling asleep those days.

It's actually kind of concerning how similar it feels to an MDMA hangover... :\

- How long are your periods of use?

i started using klonopin and xanax for every weekend for 5-6months straight, then i decided to take kp 3-4 times a week, and then over winter break (3weeks) i took klonopin along with an opiate (either hydrocodone, oxycodone, codeine, tramadol, or demerol) every day...oh yah i smoked weed everyday and still do lol

- How much would you normally use in one sitting?

benzo dosing started at .5-1mg xanax or klonopin along with tagamet to 3-6mgs daily....this was the first time i actually binged on opiates though, so i was only using 15mgs oxy/hydro along with 50-100mgs tramadol or demerol every day...and then the final day i had 2mg klonopin + 200mg tramadol at 12pm and at 9pm i took 2mg xanax + 45mg roxicodone

- Would you use during the day, or only when you're ready for bed?

during the day, as soon as i awoke

when i ran out of money and pills, i experienced anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, fatigue, restlessness, ect.. it really fucking sucked so i don't really do that anymore except it feels like i'm about to fall over the edge again :/

I'm in a very similar position. My prescriptions have been gone within the first 2 weeks for several months now, and I've taken 3 or 4 over a few hours. I also take them during the day pretty often (especially snorted). I think that snorting it is what really changed my relationship with ambien.

I get side effects from it that are much worse than those of actual benzos. It makes me anxious and ragey and messes up my memory. It's also the best drug I've ever taken for insomnia, and I've had terrible insomnia for about a decade. I still think its a pretty harmless substance (if you actually take it as directed), but once you start abusing it the game completely changes.

Thank you guys so much for sharing your experiences. I have not used zolpidem in well over a week and I don't feel exactly like I'm in withdrawal, however I have noticed I've been slightly more irritable lately. Very slightly though, nothing life-changing. I am planning to use at some point in the next few days though.
