I've been told that zoloft and cigarettes do and do not counteract each other. When I asked my psychiatrist, he wasn't certain, but believed that they might be "fighting" for the same receptor, therefore canceling each other out? Would nicotine really decrease zoloft's efficacy and vice versa?

Its been speculated that sertraline may decrease nicotine's rewarding properties, but there isn't a solid answer for this in the literature. Most of the studies I've read seem to indicate that either no effect or a weak (non-statistically significant) interference between sertraline and nicotine.

What about vice versa? Are there any studies about nicotine diminishing the effects of zoloft?

Smoking induces liver enzymes responsible for metabolizing zoloft so smokers will show lower plasma levels due to increased first pass metabolism and decreased elimination half life.
