Youths' drug of choice? Prescription

The misuse and abuse of prescription pharmaceuticals has been going on for long time. They just didn't document it in this fashion until pretty recently. Cross tops, Black Beauties, Ludes... These are all pills that my parents abused the hell out of and they're baby boomers, they were smart enough to hide their scrips from me after I downed 30 5mg oxy IR in one day when I was like 15. I agree with SigmaSis on this one though... The recreational use of pharmies in moderation is pretty benign and MOST, not all but MOST of the deaths / health problems linked to the generation RX pill popping frenzy have occurred because of misinformation or just straight up lacque of information. If you are going to take a pill, make sure you know exactly what it is, and don't take your monkey's uncles goldfish's opinion. GO IDENTIFY THE PILL ONLINE BY USING ADVANCED SEARCH FEATURES WHERE YOU CAN SEARCH BY IMPRINT CODE.

Imprints don't lie, well, usually they don't, anyone remember those bright green 80s floatin' around the east coast that were actually made of fentanyl? Anywho, even then it was obvious those were home pressed because the coloring was soooo off and they were colored all the way through. Bright green from top to bottom and in the middle. Took me a while but I found some posts here on BL that revealed the mystery of what opiate these home made 80s contained.... (DrOoOl) mmmm. Fentanyl... MMMM

Thats exactly what happened when i was 12 years old. I found a bottle of 120, watson 7.5mg hydrocodones, with less than 10 missing from the bottle. I had a bad headache and had heard that my mom used them for her back pain and that when she took them she couldn't feel any pain for about 5 hours or so. So i went in and took 2 of them (i took 2 because i was use to taking 2 aspirin, tylenol, etc.). 30 minutes later while laying in bed i was floating. It was the best feeling i had ever had. Before you know it the bottle was empty. It took her a little over a year to even notice they were gone. I left the bottle with one in it.

Ever since that first night, in sixth or seventh grade that i took my first opiate, I've been in love ever since. I haven't stopped taking them since then.

This outlook that the kids have that they are "safer" is wrong. And it could possibly mean bad things for the future of prescription drugs. I honestly didn't have that outlook on it when I went and took those the first time. I just had a bad headache and thought "Hey these are better than aspirin, my headache will definately be gone." The fact that euphoria came along with it was a suprise to me.

These kids don't understand (well most of them anyways) that prescription drugs (the benzos, opiates, stimulants) are some of the most addictive substances out there. The age at which kids are picking up drugs now is getting younger and younger. Sadly a lot of them will end up like me. An opiate addict before they make it to high school.

And there's not much the parents can do, besides hiding their pills, that is gonna slow it a bit for some kids. Talking to them about it may further it.

For instance:
Mom: "Hey Sally, mommy has some pain medication called hydrocodone for her back that is very strong and very dangerous so I need you to stay away from it."
Sally: "Ok Mom."
Sally goes on to school, or to the internet and asks about hydrocodone. She finds out she can get an awesome high from it or does what i did and takes some when she has an ache or pain.

Parents need to start locking them up.

I don't wanna see more kids end up like me. Going from taking 2 hydrocodone. To a ~year later taking around 150mg's of hydrocodone just to get off. To snorting 3-5 OC 80's a day. To snorting heroin only 3 occasions before they start banging it and getting to a gram and a half a day. (luckily i'm back down to 1/2 to 3/4 a g a day.)

The uninformed drug users are the worst kind. People, please, read up your shit. Even the kids. I mean, i believe i was 15 when i came to this site and it has been the best thing that has ever happened to my drug using. Well in some cases it probably made me want to try stuff i wouldn't have even known about, but at least i learned the safe ways to use that drug. There needs to be more action like this site takes out in the public. Not just on a single website that not many people will come across. The information here could save so many lives. I am one that it has saved.

God, the kids they are speaking of are the ones that still snort xanax. ITS NOT FUCKING WATER SOLUBLE AND IT NEVER WILL BE!!! HOW MANY TIMES DO I HAVE TO TELL MY FRIENDS THAT. THE ONLY REASON IT MAY FUCK YOU UP FASTER IS BECAUSE ITS CRUSHED AND HAS MORE SURFACE AREA FOR YOUR STOMACH (ONCE IT DRIPS DOWN THERE) TO ABSORB IT!!!

Why do they need a research study to find this out!?!?! I could have told ya that one... ya bunch of PHd's! PERSCRIPTION DRUGS ARE LEGAL AND EASILY ACCESSABLE IF YOU KNOW PEOPLE.... Marijuana although not even in the same class as perscriptions "by fact, not myth," is more difficult to find and much more expensive to purchase. The longer you arrest freedom loving citizens of your own country, the worse these numbers are gona get. IF THERE ALL FUCK"N PHD's THEN WHY THE FUCK CAN"T THEY FIGURE OUT MORON OF A THEORY WHICH IS SO SIMPLE,,, YET MORE TRUE THAN ANYTHING THEY"V EVER TRIED!!! "who was the asshole that said, ya know we should arrest every citizen and ruin the freedoms of these people that we have worked so hard for our own people to have." Its like why did you kill all the indians, kill the germans, kill each other in the civil war, I mean "HELLO!?!?!" Wasn't it for freedom? THEN WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU TRYING SO DESPERATLY HARD TO TAKE IT AWAY FROM YOUR OWN PEOPLE!!!! America is going down... I"m just so glad I was a baby in the 80's to be able to enjoy the last good of it...

no shit pills are the choice of young people, there cheap, highly available, and get u really fucked up( depending on which pills u take) welcome to Generation Rx

Heh it was like that when I was in HS and that was 10 years ago! ;)

People would easily get scripts for valium/xanax, oxycodone/hydrocodone, or Adderall.

Or they'd just get pills from relatives who had them and just let them sit in the medicine cabinet without taking them.

Granted herb, coke, booze, and sometimes shrooms were popular too but not as much as pills and almost everyone I knew either took Ritilian/Adderall or would take it for assignments/studying for exams.

Even back then lots of people were uneducated about Rx drugs.

I remember a guy I was friends with in jr. HS/HS who just took one of his dad's Oxy's on a whim one day, apparently it was a high dose (luckily not an OC 80mg) but he's lucky he didn't OD or accidentally die, and he didn't snort it so it didn't all enter his body at once, luckily he didn't drink on it or take more, and he hated the effects of Oxy (how can people hate the itch?) so he never took opiates again.

Other people I knew would rail percs or any pill that was available that would get them high with all the icky binders. :\

Then there were people who were into DXM but would take the brands of cough syrup that didn't have DXM only in them that have chemicals that are dangerous to take in large doses, or they'd take Coricidin brand which is very dangerous.

mrsumone-Blame the doctors.

Granted kids will still always steal pills from their parents/relatives, get their own scripts for them, or buy them from people who have them/sell them; but I used to work as a pharm tech and it was insane what people had weekly/monthly scripts written out for Benzos/opiates and other drugs for.

Granted some of the opiates were for cancer, and real pain; but you'd see older people my grandparents age come in and have a script for 240 hydrocodone for a month!

I remember saying something to this one younger pharmacist about how lots of people seem to get prescriptions for Opiates/benzos, and he did agree with me that they're really over prescribed.

I know that people do get bad anxiety/pain but I remember one woman coming in and complaining about how her doctor prescribed her way too many medications one of which was a benzo, and how she didn't want to be on so many drugs.

There was an older pharmacist there who was under the impression that people only want to abuse oxycodone and nothing else. 8)

You know, I think most doctors are under this impression as well. I was involved in a car wreck recently and was scripted #30 10/660 hydrocodone to take as needed for pain. Well, I was in a lot of pain -- and I hate hydrocodone because it doesn't help my pain and it makes me itch very badly -- not like pleasant dope-itches from the land of nod, but pissy irritable itchiness that actually increases my pain.

So I called my doctors office and told them that the hydrocodone doesn't work well with me, and makes me terribly itchy. They seemed sympathetic and said that he would write me a new script immediately.....well, when I pick up the script from the pharmacy its fricken #30 10/325 hydrocodone. HE DIDN'T EVEN LOOK AT WHAT HE WAS PRESCRIBING -- probably wrote me one script for lortab and the other for norco...thinking they were different....but anyways so I call back and say "you gave me the same thing. can I take this back or something and you can write me a script for something thats NOT hydrocodone"

....anyways, they told me that "everything else was too dangerous." and refused to prescribe me anything else. So there I was with #60 completely non-dangerous, non-addictive hydrocodone. 8) And so of course, I just said fuck it and bought some dope and oxys.

[/rant about idiot doctors.]

So in conclusion.....steal pills from your grandmother, its easier than working with a doctor -- and she probably has all the good shit anyways.

lol smackem id rather get off on drugs than getting off on insulting people over the internet any day

BTW we werent saying we were better than the reported, we agreed that the cause of drug misuse and pretty much the reason for the illegality of drugs (in great part) is people like the above who doesn't know anything about the drugs they are self-medicating themselves with. Unfortunately, not everyone is a doctor and normal intelligent people actually do end up/have to study what they are going to put inside their bodies for obvious reasons. This, does also mean they are not merely pretentious drug geeks (to put it in your own terms) but also somewhat more coherent than say.. a soccer mom popping her vicodin every day and one day wondering why she feels like such shit when she doesnt take it.
cheers

doctors have one of the highest drug abuse rates of any profession. i don't know what you mean by the term "misuse" but if you mean people becoming addicted or doing dangerous things with drugs, i would argue that lack of knowledge of the risks is not the primary cause of this.

alcohol is legal, everyone knows it's addictive and yet people still get addicted to it all the time. drunk driving is illegal, everyone knows that and yet people still do it all the time.

you would be shocked at what some doctors don't know. still, i would have to disagree with you here, i think most doctors are aware of the abuse potential of hydrocodone.

^Oh, I'm certainly not debating that; most doctors are surely aware of the abuse potential of hydrocodone. I just think that they underestimate the abuse potential of hydrocodone/acetaminophen preparations when compared to oxycodone/acetaminophen preparation because of the difference in the scheduling of the two compounds. (I mean, I ended up with like 60 of those things, and I would have been cool with 15 percocets.)

Hahaha but I'll stop talking now because I've hijacked this thread so badly I might as well go ahead and jihad some buildings with it. =D

well it may not necessarily be that the the doctors underestimate it, it could be that the DEA underestimates it and thus the doctors have a lot less to worry about when prescribing hydrocodone/apap vs oxycodone/apap so they prescribe it a lot more liberally.

I am a physician, and what you said is true. It is much more of a pain in the ass to give oxycodone/oxycontin than it is to give hydrocodone. We know it is still as addictive but it is easier and you dont get the DEA up your ass quite as fast as when you are giving out the former.

There is a big push in health care to monitor/document pain. So, given it is well documented we have to do something about it. Pills are an easy way out.

Alot of it boils down to a system that is broken in this regard. I cant fix it tonight, though.

Man I run with the wrong crowds. I don't know anyone with prescriptions of any kind, except old people who take statins.

I begged everyone I know to try to find me Adderall for half a year, and I got 4 pills once.

No one person can fix it in any short length of time. But we can all slowly and surely work to incorporate more common-sense based policies through sharing our opinions with others and supporting causes that are consistent with our beliefs.

As a physician, I'm sure it is insulting to you that an organization like the DEA has the ability to interfere with the treatment of your patients and/or second-guess your highly trained professional opinion.

perscription pills are not the drug of choice, are they? they are the drug of force. the powers that be made it hard to get a bunch of the good stuff.

"And I'm not doing street drugs -- cocaine or mushrooms."

Mushrooms?Whers that street which grows mushrooms?

I definitely agree on the whole "generation rx" idea, it sure happened to me at 17 when I started taking hydrocodone and adderall, then got prescribed dexedrine... I'm 21 now.

All the oxy's and whatnots as well I have come across, but never got a chance to try damn hydromorphones...

Yeah I've done "street drugs" but still I prefer prescriptions...
Even though H is nice and shit, I don't trust it's cut. Still felt great though. Cocaine was nice... but like I said the pharmys are all essentially pure, besides the binders and fillers.

I'm going through therapy to get away from this shit, I just want to be back smoking weed and occassionally taking pills. Like super occassionally.

The benzos fucked my life up pretty bad too...

We probably were all naive when we started taking pills. My friend gave me a small pink pill 10 years ago, which happened to be an Oxy 20. I swallowed it whole and nodded for 6-8 hours straight. All I could say was "Where can I get some more of that??" I wasn't thinking that 10 years down the road I'd be at rock bottom, without a penny because of these pills. But it happened, regardless.

I think abuse of prescription drugs is just in the media alot more now. Years ago it was ludes, seconal, nembutal, miltown, percodan, various amphetamine pills , as well weird mixes of barbs and amphetamines in one pill.

Now it's oxycontin, xanax, percocets, vicodin, etc. Some kids these days seem to be real dumb and take shit they don't even know there taking, They take crap like seroquel thinking it will get them high just cause it fucks them up.

When i was going to school there wasn't many pharms around at all. The only pharmaceuticals we had back then where valium, tylenol 3's and 4's, demerol, ritalin and occasionally percocet when we could get it.

The first time i got my hands on pills was when i was 13 and i got ahold of some xanax. Im sure i was one of only maybe 10 kids in my school to try xanax.
