i love computer games, and have done for a long time. i play them close to every day, and i cant ever see myself really stopping altogether. i dont necessarily believe playing games is bad for you, only when its all you do, and i cant really see how learning strategies, problem solving techniques, and predictive ability could be a setback for the average person, but what do you think? mind-numbing or expanding?
and what about violent games? myself, ive always loved violent games... yet ive never harmed another human physically, with the intent of hurting them. take your average rough n tough footy player, and the nerd behind the keyboard, whos more likely to start and or participate in a fight?
im just bored.. :)

Video games are great!
I was a dedicated console bunny in my teens and while I don't have as much time these days I still love 'em.
I have a Gameboy Advance which kicks arse on the train to work and school (Advance Wars rocks my world!).
But even better than that! I love getting together with as many people as possible for LAN games (Alien vs Predator 2 rules the roost, but Unreal Tournement and Soldier of Fortune kick some ass too). I only get to do it once every few months but when I do... mayhem!
Is any one else a fan of speeding off their dial while gaming (A garage full of speedy mo'fo's blasting ass at a LAN party is awesome!).

my lan days and my drug days are two separate periods of my life... however i did one day want to smoke a joint at one of those old lans, though havent been to one in around 2 years and i dont really intend to go back
:)

^^ the two cultures have merged some what
at major melb lans - there a number of people who mix both games and drugs.
back on topic, yeah vid games pass the time of day for me, not really interested in being a progaymer anymore :)
[ Edit: if talking about drugs at these events, it's probably better not to mention specific examples ]

I personally love my computer games, when I was 7 I saw river raid on atari and I got so fascinated that it was then that I decided I need to be around computers.
I play games on regular basis, not so much at home anymore, my love for single player games have kind of went away.
Games are so much more advanced these days, but I miss the simplicity and addictiveness of older games.
I do have regular Counter-strike/Day of Defeat
LAN sessions at work and sometimes a bit of internet action too.
Games simply rock !!!
You get to experience 'alternative reality' but then again there are other means :)
Many times when shit hit the fan in uni, I just went and played games forgetting about all the worries and concentrating on nothing but the screen, so they do have 'magical healing powers'.
Like Melancholic said, I dont believe violent games force a person to have an outlet for that violence in real life.
All the violent people have predisposition to violence in their mind and I'm yet to be convinced that games cause this violent response on an average person.

oh what fun are computer games!
only i can bear witness to the many hours spent driving (usually under some influence) in all types of expensive and fast cars, lobbing grenades at friends as we charge for the rocket launcher, and running jobs for the mafia in a stolen police car. and normally i feel like such a light hearted and law abiding kinda guy.
its such a great way to relax. and socialise (everyone scream LAN party YEAH!)
what excites me is the new stuff about to come out, in the way of video cards. when people learn how these work, expect some awesome looking games (has anyone seen the demo vid of doom3?)
however i cannot admit to being good at these things. i can drive, but i'm a crap shot, and can't organise an army to save myself...

I've been playing video games for about the past 24 or 25 years (apple][ or whatever it was back in 1978ish) and feel they never were a negative aspect of my life. I simply don't get much time to play anymore and seem that my taste is VERY refined now whereas I used to play every game that seemed to be out these days I tend to dislike most I play. I guess it's just the way I am at moment, I might find my love for video games once again who knows?
Anyway, a couple of articles about video games (and in a positive regard too!) Basically about a law regarding video games...

Violent games good for kids
By Nick Farrell [26-09-2002]
Academics defend childrens' rights to play video game nasties
"Most studies and experiments on video games containing violent content have not found adverse effects," a brief lodged with the court said.

Scholars File Brief Opposing Video Game Law
"Indeed, research on media violence more generally has also failed to prove that it causes -- or is even a 'risk factor' for -- actual violent behavior," the brief said.

bunch of familiar faces :) all welcoming faces :)
Computer games are great fun, provide hours of entertainment and brain stimulation... but yeah when they get the better of you and you spend your life @ them. Maybe its time to take a step back and piece your life together.
Having said that there are a number of "progamers", scene isnt so big in Australia yet, but its big in Ameirca, Europe and Korea, not sure about anywhere else...
But I think earlier they were rumours of broadcasting the Counter-Strike WCG Finals, on a late nite tv slot for ESPN.
The latest big game by Blizzard, Warcraft III. There were comeptitions in Korea, where the Winner walked away with a nice 16k prize, and the runner up walked away with 8k.
Heard you need a license to participate in these CyberGames events, and they cost up to $100/year to own.
As for progaming in Australia. There was a Australian Counterstrike Leage where all the "top clans" came together and battled it out. The winner was flown over to America, to compete in the world cyber games over there + given a bit of spending cash :)
So... how far do you take Gaming? The only real way to become a progamer, is start playing games really seriously, and "train" in a sense for them... where do you draw the line?

I know a bluelighter who is a games developer for one of the biggest production houses in Australia :)

go warcraft! go warcraft! :)
though the RPG element isnt very RPG... so if your after RPG go neverwinter

Counter-strike, Counter-strike
my one, true addiction.
For some reason all other 1st person shooters (like quake III arena and UT etc) just don't have the same.... elegance as Counter-strike.
In CS you have to *think*. Out-judge your opponant. Know if they heard you running then they are either going to run to catch up or run around the block to shoot you from the other side.
Its not all lightning quick reflexes (although you can play that way if you want, awp style) but a co-ordinanted gathering of many skills. Teamwork, hand-eye co-ord, knowledge of the weapons, strategy and most importantly tactics.

i like video and computer games, we don't own any consoles anymore (used to have a PSOne) but if the opportunity arises, then i'm keen as.
The only thing that gets to me is when kids stop spending time outside after school and on weekends, so they can play games...not good,
There is an ad on TV up here in Brisbane, where a little boy says to his mum "Can i go play cricket at Tom's house???". Mum says sure. Over at Toms house, kid arrives and sits down to play a video game version of cricket!!. Meanwhile, Toms mum is drinking milk and watching the kids, with a lame ass grin on her face! Unbelievable.

I'm personally not a big fan of computer games. I have a Play Station, which was a present, and I've never played anything except for Medal of Honour, which is about as acceptable as computer games get.

Games have never been a bad influence in my life. But don't ask me the same question during an exam period.
At the moment I have an urge to play lots of RPG's. I'm currently playing Wizardry 8 and I'm going to be getting neverwinter nights. And it's a week break next week.
Awwwww Yeah. :)

I'm a playstation junkie myself but I also enjoy strategy games on pc - such as Age of Empire and Command and Conquer.
Also found memories of Diablo :)
I don't have a workable pc at home now, so a playstation junkie I remain...

I don't mind playing video games (perfect cure for comedowns). I don't play it that often, but lately, because of Metal Gear Solid 2, my uni work comes second, right after PSX2 time.

It's my opinion that generations from our generation on have the best driving skills and by far the best dexterity of any generation.
I mean... I've never had a car accident, but that's not that suprising when you consider that I've been racing F1 cars since I was 5 ;)
