I've noticed that for some psychs, there are things I tend to do to check if I'm starting to come up yet or not. For instance, on DOC, I always look to see if the string of lights I have around my room are glowing more/different than usual. Once I see that, I know I'm starting to trip. On 4-AcO-DMT, I usually look to trees to see if they're curling and spiraling. Also for some reason I usually first notice I'm coming up when I'm in the bathroom.

I'm interested to hear if you guys do something similar to this.

It may be because i've tripped many times but I don't find myself doing this and can't remember if I did in the beginning. For me, I simply always notice the slight mental changes that take place in the 25-90 minute mark for 2-3 hour come up psychedelics and 10-45 minutes 45-60 minute com up psychedelics. Also I usually walk around/clean/fix things up and just do other random things to occupy myself when coming up so sometimes I may not even notice the very first(this can depend on the psychedelic though, like if it has a short easy come up I may not do much of anything). So usually i'll just go sit down and focus in on the TV for a second, then notice that I had either an odd train of thought or my thoughts veered into a psychedelically odd direction. Visual activity has never preceded mental activity for me, only sometimes do they occur in close proximity and thats really only during the either odd come up where it feels like someone hit fast forward on you or something like DMT that begins with a bang.

How could you not notice it starting? It usually hits me all at once and I get something intense happening eg. my friend walking across the room and seeing the tracers of him all across the room.

Good question, I don't really test it often but going outside really brings it out if it's there.

I edited the thread title because 'X' confused me, thought you meant XTC even though people don't typically use the term X. Hope its ok.

Also, here is a definition from PIHKAL that might be relevant to you:

ALERT, n. The first clue that a drug will show activity. Each researcher, with experience, comes to recognize his own personal alert. It may be a tinge of lightheadedness, a chill, or a brief raising of the hair on his neck, and simply serves as a reminder that he took something half an hour (or a couple of hours) ago. Sometimes an alert can follow very soon after the taking of the drug, without any further effects becoming apparent until some time later. Each person's alert tends to be experienced consistently, regardless of the nature of the drug being researched.

I use the term X for ecstasy, and it definitely confused me too, but I was on mobile so logging in to change it would have been a little difficult - thanks :D

For me personally, and I'm sure others will agree on this - on any drug I like to go to the bathroom frequently when I'm waiting for the effects to start, I almost always realise just how hard it's kicking in when I go to the bathroom. Sometimes I've had trips where it seems rather light and I'm underwhelmed, then I go to the bathroom and boom the walls are melting - and this happens for other drugs too, especially alcohol. I wonder why we tend to notice the effects more in the bathroom? Maybe just because we're alone with our thoughts and the drug? :)

Definitely! about the bathroom thing. It still happens when I am home alone though so the bathroom doesn't make me any more alone. Maybe it's because it is a relatively unexpected change in setting just like stepping outside when you drop inside or the other way around. A small room with a john and a bunch of tiles, that can magnify a more subtle change in state of mind, don't you think? The total change in input/output reflects a change that would otherwise still be unnoticed.
Or something?

Well, I'm usually home alone for my trips too. I agree about tiles though, my bathroom tiles are insane when I'm tripping, in fact they're actually an optical illusion when I'm sober - if I stare at one tile, all the tiles next to it shift in opposite directions, imagine how much crazier it looks on psychedelics 8o

I wonder if the fact most of our bathrooms have mirrors has something to do with it too? Or something about relieving yourself? Haha :D

Depends on what I've taken and how much. Generally though I'll start to notice a definite alteration to my thoughts and mood, but it's hard to put a finger on exactly what it is. A sense of familiarity and possibility begins to open in my mind and euphoria and / or anxiety sets in hard. Shortly after, I usually start noticing patterns and seeing tracers.

I also notice my trips often don't truly kick into gear until I've played some music!

You guys should have seen the bathroom at the house of my last LSD trip. Green tiles up the walls with 3D-shadowed images of water splashes. It was trippy enough going in there sober. I've never noticed that a trip amps up from going to the bathroom though, but it's something I hear a lot.

That last sentence is so off for me, it is always different.

Usually I get tingles down my spine. Other than that, my saliva regularly starts to taste a bit like metal. A part from that, I note that my attention lingers just slightly longer than usual on whatever I happen to be doing.

lulzkiller, those sound right to me, aside from the spine tingles, I usually feel a little light-headed instead. The metal taste is usually replaced with the taste of whatever I took - except in a few cases, e.g. Methoxetamine, where lately I've been getting a reminiscence of the taste of Ketamine every time I come up, strange haha.

I don't mind at all! I will always welcome clarifying edits (8

And that PIHKAL passage is great. It excites me more to read the book in its entirety, as I will be purchasing it soon. Huzzah!
Shulgin clearly was just thinking what we're all thinking before we knew to think it.

I have to disagree with Shulgin on that one. I find the alert differs on each drug. For example, on DOC, I'll get a very early alert - usually within 5-10 minutes - consisting of bright blobs of colour, sparkels, and little flashes of light, which will go away and not return until the 2 hour point. Yet with something like psilocybin, I will feel the first rushes of a body-high. With 2C-x, I will get a slight increase in eroticism and colour enhancement about an hour in, and the trip wont really start until another hour.

It is also heavily dependant upon setting. If I'm inside, the first visuals I notice may be creeping shadows and breathing. Yet if I'm outside, I'm more likely to notice fractal light phenomenon in the sky, or a giddyness in the head because I am moving around and interacting with my environment much more.

with stims my alert is posivite thoughts and my cock shrinking
On psychedelics i look for carpet breathing and being horny

i checked my eyes to see if i was tripping yet *in a dream* a few weeks ago so that's usually my first way of checking, although it has never been a reliable indicator.

going to the bathroom is definitely a surefire way to check - something about the brightness and the tiles and the lack of distractions helps bring it out i think...

the red tinge and glossy patterning on the tiles in my local fastfood chicken shop always make me feel like i'm tripping too, every time - reminds me of 2C-D specifically!
