I just watched the film 'The Bucket List'

The Bucket List is a 2007 comedy film directed by Rob Reiner, written by Justin Zackham, and starring Academy Award-winners Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman. The main plot follows two terminally ill men (portrayed by Nicholson and Freeman) on their road trip with a wish list of things to do before they "kick the bucket."

In the film they want to visit Rome, see the Taj Mahal, get a tattoo, kiss a beautiful women, sky dive, help a stranger, go on safari, laugh till they cry and some others. Some other lists online include snorkelling the Great Barrier Reef, going into Space, riding a motorbike across the world, flying concorde, eating at some of the best restaurants in the world etc.

And it got me thinking about my 'must do' things before I die.

In no particular order and probably more than ten:

  • Road Trip on Route 66, United States
  • Walk the Great Wall of China
  • High roller gambling at Las Vegas
  • See Machu Picchu in Peru (this will be done in a few months time)
  • Visit the Great Pyramids of Egypt
  • Experience Carnival in Rio De Janeiro (will be a reality next year)
  • Ride the Trans-Siberian Railways
  • Drink myself silly at Oktoberfest in Munich
  • See what's left of the Berlin Wall
  • Attend Burning Man in the Nevada Desert
  • Sip some Havana rum & smoke a Cuban cigar in Havana
  • Join in the mass water fights at Songkran (Thai New Year)
  • Go to Glasto!
  • Shoot some sort of automatic weapon, AK47 maybe
  • Visit Easter Island Chile to see those mysterious statues
  • Running the bulls at Pamplona
  • Illegal tour of San Pedro Prison in La Paz, Bolivia (will do it if it's still possible later this year)
  • See all 7 wonders of the modern world
  • The Rickshaw Rally across India

So what about you? Thought it might be an interesting topic. :)

See what's left of the Berlin Wall

It's not that interesting. Some of the graffiti & drawings are quite cool though. I've got a bit laying around somewhere.

My list:

Visit New Zealand & Norway. Maybe the Canadian rockies.

See the Northern lights, guess that could happen in Norway.

Not that bothered about having a 'must do' list other than seeing those few things though.

There are so many things I'd like to do before I die but for now I'll just list two

I want to see the aurora borealis

Be fluent in Three languages (not including English 8) )

Was thinking German, French and Spanish. Helpful seeing as I already know a bit of all three. I just need to learn a bit more.

It'd be good to look back on life when you're old / on your death bed and think you'd seen and done most of the things you always wanted to. Or at least tried.

Quality thread Spade, sometimes you do have some uses :p

Before I die I'd like to and the list is variable but lets start with :-

learn to ride my own motorbike
paint / sculpt again
work abroad, preferably VSO
"do" Africa
make the perfect hollandaise sauce
be a granny
grow my own perfect weed
learn to meditate
live in the moment
take drugs for the rest of my life without harming myself
be contented - which I'm well on my way to achieving ;)

to be continued, maybe...unless I achieve some of the above :D

Living for the moment is a good one Kate, something that's pretty hard to do IMO. Really hard not to think about the consequences of your actions and allow that to stop you just going for things.

I agree with Kate. This is a great thread Spade. Reminds us all that we should really make the most of things. So that when we're old we may look back with fond memories, advendtures and no regrets

Got a couple more to add:

Play in the main event at the World Series of Poker Event in Las Vegas and preferably win.

And the main one which I really can't beleive I forgot as it's an upcoming mission of mines...

Sniff a line of coke off a Brazilian girls tits / arse. :D

Awesome movie, the letter at the end is properly touching!
Anyway, more to the point

  • See the Northern Lights (preferably under the influence)
  • Go on a road trip across America, or atleast go city-hopping in America with the ever lovely Greyhound coach
  • Watch the sunset/sunrise at Stonehenge
  • Tubing on that River Laos, looks badass
  • Learn to surf
  • Visit Tokyo
  • Live like the dude from INto The Wild (Probably/definately won't happen, but the idea of living like that always appeals to me weirdly)

Pretty shit list in comparison to some peoples, but if i did all that (and a few others which i cant think of) before I died i'd be proud of meself. x

edit:
Oh, another one. Go to the moon/space (DMT is cheating)

Tubing down the Nam Song river in Vang Vieng is one of the best things I've done. So peaceful and beautiful, made all the better that you can stop for a cold beer to make the journey that little bit more special. Incredible. <3

It's up there with snorkelling the Great Barrier Reef for me in terms of 'highlights'. I'm pretty terrified of open water / the sea and have a fish phobia but once I relaxed it was pretty incredible. Mind blowing in fact.

Going to Tokyo would be cool too. I'll defo do that in the near future.

Ah you lucky fucker you've done it?! Awesome. My brothers going travelling in a few weeks and he's going. I really fancy it, the videos on youtube look awesome. I've always heard of a menu which serves some illicist 'delicasses'...I wouldn't mind visiting that region in general actually. What're the locals like?

Yeah most of the cafes and bars in Vang Vieng have 'happy menus'. Weed, mushies or opium in food and drinks. Locals are poor as fuck but lovely. They'll share food and beer with you around the camp fire at night and always greet you with an energetic "SABAIDEE" (hello). <3

Haha 'happy menus' that's awesome. You sample many of them? I'd like to think i'll be going at somepoint in 2011 and i'm pretty excited already hah. I've heard hotels are pretty cheap aswell so y'know, all the better.

Tokyo's %) well worth anyone's list and I hope I can go back - loved Japan <3

I'd quite like to make a sand sculpture on the beach - a big fucker of one =D considering I live by the beach I should get off my arse and do that.

I tried the opium tea, had a bag of mushies and smoked some opium / weed. Accomodation is cheap, basic twin room with en suite and aircon for less than a fiver. Really lovely place, beautiful scenery everywhere, loads to see and do, great food, friendly locals and semi-legal drugs. What more do you need? :)

What did you get up to in Japan Kate?

The sand sculpture is a good one, do it tomorrow and take pic. :)

I started to think about this kind of list a long time ago. I was in a field and tripping balls on acid in company of thousands of ecstatic people, minutes after the full solar eclipse.

The first thing on the list was to see another full solar eclipse. It is the Nature's greatest spectacle and I recommend it 100% to everyone.

Others were/are:

dancing to the sound of Aurora borealis,
meeting perfect lover,
trekking in Himalayas,
a million people experience (I think Hajj is the only option?),
taking the Trans-Siberian railway,
cherry blossom festival in Japan,
Grand Canyon,
visiting Chernobyl,
learning to fence,
getting married in Vegas in a drive thru chapel,
experiencing Angel Falls in wet season,
driving in New York traffic, Saigon traffic, across States and in full throttle on Autobahn,
trying ice yachting,
hitchhiking on a cargo ship,
(witnessing fusion power and global paradigm shift) - just a wish, really

I am halfway through :)

you should totally be a travel salesman haaa. you've totally sold it to me, once my finances are in check i'm totally dragging a friend there for a few weeks. opium has been on my to-do list for quite some time now, and i can't imagine a better place to do it than there! awesome.

I dunno spade, I catch your drift and I suppose it is nice to have a few nice holidays but I think when you're old you'll be thinking about laughs you had with your parents or other loved ones who arn't around anymore.

EDIT: It's a bit of a consumerist notion of life too. What do you do if you havn't got much money? Regret the fact you never got to go round the world on a yacht forever? Not to mention the carbon footprint you're leaving with all this travelling.

The actual definition of adventure is

adventure
noun
1. venture, experience, chance, risk, incident, enterprise, speculation, undertaking, exploit, fling, hazard, occurrence, contingency, caper, escapade I set off for a new adventure in the US on the first day of the year.
2. excitement, action, passion, thrill, enthusiasm, fever, warmth, flurry, animation, ferment, commotion, elation, discomposure A feeling of adventure and excitement.
verb
venture, risk, brave, dare

it would very much appear that your definition of "adventure" and mine seem similar

Adventure is delving into the unknown. Trying new things (not just drugs) Running topless when you think no one can see you. Having sex out doors. moving to another country. Getting lost on purpose. Exploring the woods you've never been to hoping you dont get too lost. Raising children. These are all great adventures to me. I look forward to many of them.

Goodness, Mushie hunting the other day was adventurous. Fun, exciting, new and so peaceful. Came home empty handed but very happy :)

It would be sad to think that anyone's definition of an adventure a holiday.

Someone has missed the point of sailing in a yacht.

Next week i'm off to Indonesia to learn to paraglide. I consider this both an adventure and a holiday and learning to fly a (in this case very) light aircraft has been on my 'bucket list' for many decades now. I have no doubt i'll remember it for a long time to come - although i am going with family.
